Sep-19-06  suenteus po 147: <Sneaky> I'm betting on Kramnik, mostly because it will cause the most problems if he wins :)
Sep-19-06  chessmoron: <fersonatu> Watcha talkin' about. They are opened.
Sep-19-06  fersonatu: <Chessmoron> I must have misread something. No idea what is wrong with me. Must place bet soon.
Sep-19-06  refutor: i am fully opposed to the "max 200" rule...

WannaBe: Knowing how well I did in the last legs... I might as well just bet it all on myself in <Chess Classics> tournament.

  Sneaky: Why's that, refutor?
Sep-20-06  chessmoron: <Sneaky> THIS:

<What are minimum bets? Maximum bets?>

<<<<<<<<>>>>Each event has a minimum bet selected by the bookie. For most events, the minimum is 5 chessbucks, but for event with lots of lines to bet on, lower amounts are sometimes permitted. There is also a maximum bet or "betting cap" which is applied to your account. When you start the game, your betting cap will be 100 chessbucks. The bookie will not accept more than this amount on any single ticket. As your net worth grows, he will allow larger wagers from you. This table shows the maximum bet allowed for various net worths:

Your Net Worth Betting cap
0-1499 200
1500-2499 500
2500-4999 1,000
5000-7499 2,500
7500-9999 5,000
10,000+ 10,000 >

Sep-20-06  refutor: <why's that refutor?> my plan was to bet 1000 on kramnik and then take daily loans from the loan shark and bet it all on draws in each individual game...at least 2/3 of them are going to be draws so it was a foolproof strategy...(famous last words)...now i have to rethink it again ;)

Chessgames Bookie: Here's a bet that anybody can win: World Chess Championship: OPENING CEREMONY: Who gets White?

Guess which player gets the white pieces for game #1. This will be decided during the Opening Ceremony with a random drawing tomorrow at 7:00pm Elista time.

Sneaky: Is it generally considered an advantage to play White in the even numbered rounds? I would think so, because then you get White when you have more information about what results are satisfactory.
Sep-20-06  refutor: <sneaky> half way through there's a "skip day" where they switch colours e.g.

ABABAB rest day BABABA so whoever has white the first game gets white the last game as well.

Sneaky: Ah, that's a good idea.

Why the heck is there so much money on the underpromotion bet? A bet like that should have 50:1 odds or so, it's only 5:1.

Sep-20-06  Dozy: I posted this on my own forum, but maybe it's better here. A victim's lament:

Advice to youngsters leaving home in my day was, "Don't smoke, don't drink, don't gamble."

Well, I didn't always take that advice. I tried smoking but, fortunately, dropped it early; drinking captured my enthusiasm for a few years but that's now become a civilised glass-of-wine-with-a-meal and something for special occasions.

Then there was gambling.

I gotta admit, that was my downfall and it took me a long time to realise I was never going to win money. Eventually my bookie and I divorced and I thought my gambling addiction was behind me. Until I came here and met <ChessBookie>.

I soon realised that <ChessBookie> is no more generous with his odds than his flesh-and-blood counterparts at the track, but nevertheless I placed a few bets and won a few dollars. Chessdollars, that is.

Then, this week, disaster! <ChessBookie> waved his electronic wand and deleted my winnings.

I'm devastated because I had found a way to actually spend those ChessDollars: I was going to give them to SWMBO for Christmas so she could buy her own gift. (It would, of course, be up to her to find an outlet that would accept them.)

Ah well, if all else fails I guess I'll just have to visit <Loanshark>...

Sep-21-06  fersonatu: <Sneaky> I'm guessing that the underpromo bet odds are holding up for the same reason that the "mate" bet odds are holding up. People like me don't want to tie up 100's for 3 weeks with the payout only netting ~40CB. Why are people betting there wil be an underpromo or a mate ... I don't know. I thought you were one of those that liked longshots. Do you happen to have a ticket or two that pays when Tops plays P-e8=N Mate?

lostemperor: Wow, already $5,378 bettings on who gets white, Topalov or Kramnik, what is a total toss up.

I just flip a coin, it says Kramnik gets white!

Sep-21-06  percyblakeney: Go Topalov, get white in game 1! :-)
Sep-21-06  dakgootje: Just flipped a coin too, kramnik came out as winner ^^

Im sorry, but im not gonna bet on such thing =P

Sep-21-06  TrueBlue: thanks for the donations dakgootje, appreciate it :)
Sep-21-06  dakgootje: This leg im gonna win with a VERY secret strategy, which even i dont know about yet muaahahahah ;-)

Hide In The Hills!!!

well that might actually work as im the only participant then... =P

Sep-21-06  YouRang: The "Help Page" says this about 'maximum bets':

<There is also a maximum bet or "betting cap" which is applied to your account. When you start the game, your betting cap will be 100 chessbucks.>

Below this, there is a table showing the betting caps:

<Your Net Worth , Betting cap

0-1499 , 200
1500-2499 , 500
... >

The table seems to say that the lowest betting cap is 200, whereas the statement above mentions that the cap is initially 100. Am I misunderstanding something?

Chessgames Bookie: <YouRang> Sorry about that--at the last minute we decided to double the betting caps, and that part of the help page never was repaired. The cap is of course 200 to start.
Sep-21-06  DCP23: Unfortunately, still nothing official on the drawing of colors! There are however many unofficial reports from different sources that Kramnik got Whites and Topalov got Blacks. (Sources include a Bulgarian sports site (link: http://topsport.ibox.bg/news/id_422... ), GM Shipov says so in his forum, not providing his source, another user on the same forum is actually reporting from Elista and confirms this, and finally the admin of chesspro.ru posted same info quoting the chess journalist Yuri Vasilyev who called him from Elista by phone).

Well, that's certainly enough for me to be sure, but I'm no bookie ;)

Sep-23-06  Elixir of Life: Yay, for the first time in history I'm in top ten!
Sep-23-06  Elixir of Life: TrueBlue, how come you are so well at gambling?
