Oct-03-06  YouRang: <Chessgames Bookie: When we wrote the forfeit rule, we had in mind situations like Morozevich's alarm clock debacle at the 2005 Russian Superfinals.>

Even in that case, IMHO, it would be preferable to cancel the bets since the game wasn't played. :-)

My point is that I doubt anyone wants to take into consideration the chances of a forfeiture, for any reason, when placing a bet. It's more natural to place a bet on the outcome of a game, under the assumption that the game will actually be played.

I believe you did the right thing in this case, since the policy had be stated. I'm just suggesting that for the future, you change the policy. Anyway, thanks for considering this idea.

Forfeitures are a part of sports and betting. That is included in the skill of picking the winner and of course the current odds. If someone forfeits, they lose. That is the result. Good decision <Chessgames Bookie> and the correct one that all other sports betting agencies would have made.

  Sneaky: Question ...

I bet on the Benoni for today's game. Suppose it ends up being a Benko Gambit. Do I win??

Sneaky: I remember when I went to a horse track for the first (and almost the last) time. I bet on a horse one race, but it was a 'scratch.' I was very pleased to learn that my money was refunded 100%.

Next race, I pick a horse. When the race starts my horse stands there looking hypnotized. I think they call that a "non-starter." What a dope I felt like when I went to the ticket window to try to get my refund, the teller was polite but all the people around me had a good chuckle at my expense.

lostemperor: <The Sasn> since you seem to know about it, a question. Do the sports betting agencies also pays out, in a forfeited game, bettings "under 50 moves" "no checks" and "no long castling"? Since these were in fact correct bettings also in that forfeited game.
Oct-05-06  The Sasn: <lostemperor: <The Sasn> since you seem to know about it, a question. Since these were in fact correct bettings also in that forfeited game.> Well every agency is different, and usually for real money they would have all of those instances written in the fine print for fofeitures - as it could cost them big otherwise. I feel that because the game is paid out for a win, then that win came with under 50 moves, no castling etc etc - so you won your bet. But, as we are all playing for fun - let's let Chessgames decision be final!

lostemperor: I agree chessgames makes the final decisions. I'm just trying to help here. For this fine game! Get the normal procedures if not for now for future forfeits. Paying off only some bets would benefit one group over the other.

<However the game itself never took place, so the issue of game length, opening moves, first check, long castling, etc. are void.> It didn't hit me before. Only after my last post. If Topalov had the white pieces instead of black he would have made a move, say 1. d4! Then it would be clear to everyone. The game itself has taken place, so the issue of game length, opening moves, first check, long castling, etc. are in fact in effect. I think Chessgames Bookie would have paid off these bets. Or people would have demanded it.

If it was for real money I would still have demanded my pay offs and am sure I would have gotten it.

Anyway thanks for your work on this game Chessgames Bookie.

Oct-05-06  YouRang: <The Sasn> <Forfeitures are a part of sports and betting.> I agree that it's part of sports, but whether it's 'part of betting' is a matter of policy.

<That is included in the skill of picking the winner and of course the current odds.> That's the point. I can't imagine that there is really any "skill" in considering the probability of a forfeit, and I doubt that serious bettors actually do. In fact, the reasons for a forfeiture often only surface AFTER the bet has been placed.

<If someone forfeits, they lose. That is the result.> Understood, but still a betting agency could decide how to handle it.

<Good decision <Chessgames Bookie> and the correct one that all other sports betting agencies would have made.> It was a good decision since that was the stated policy. But that doesn't mean that <chessgames.com> can't revise the policy for future events.

<lostemperor> raised a good point in that one must clearly define what constitutes a 'forfeit'. I think a forfeit for which bets should be cancelled is the case where one of the players doesn't show up for the game.

BUT THIS RAISES ANOTHER QUESTION:
The result of game 5 is under protest by Kramnik. What happens if this protest is ruled in Kramnik's favor, and it is decided that game 5 must be replayed? Do you undo all the bets? (Of course, you can't -- but it's another reason for reconsidering the policy.)

Oct-05-06  NateDawg: YES! I can't believe that the Queen's Gambit was actually played! Unforunately, I only bet 150 chessbucks, so I won only 1200 (or something) chessbucks. If only I had bet 500; I would then have won around 4000 chessbucks! ;)

Chessgames Bookie: We have a fun new kind of proposition, the "Lucky Square".

World Chess Championship: Rd. 9: "Lucky Square" h5

The "YES" tickets will pay off if either player puts a piece or pawn on the square h5 at any point in the game. If it doesn't happen, then the "NO" tickets collect. Good luck!

  WannaBe: Come on Qh5! =)
Oct-06-06  cavaleiro: Well, until now, there were three games with h5 and three without...
Oct-06-06  babakova: I will most probably get 400 chessbucks more tomorrow. Then a few more good bets and Ill top the standings.
Oct-07-06  dakgootje: of course i like a few extra chessbucks, but i ought to say the following: I have a net-worth of 650, while my profile still mentiones 700. Is this only a matter of time (like that not everything has been discarded) or a small bug of some kind?
Oct-07-06  NateDawg: <<dakgootje> I have a net-worth of 650, while my profile still mentiones 700. Is this only a matter of time (like that not everything has been discarded) or a small bug of some kind?> It seems that there is a significant delay between when the tickets are paid out and when the standings are updated (which is also the number displayed in your profile). This probably due to the fact that the standings are only updated about twice a day. You can check the last time they were updated by clicking on ChessBookie Game and looking at the leaderboard in the upper right corner.
Oct-08-06  dakgootje: Hey, i never noticed that part telling when they were updated for the last time! Thanks ;-)
Oct-08-06  Joshka: <chessgamesBookie> What happens if only 11 games (as it sure looks like) are played?.....I have money on the amount of draws in the match, but that bet coincided with there being 12 games played. thanks in advance.
Oct-08-06  Bob726: <Joshka> There's going to be 12 games no matter what now since Kramnik won game 10.
Oct-08-06  semislav: On the betting for 11th move first check it says:

Topalov
Kramnik
Draw??????

Oct-09-06  NakoSonorense: Draw = NO CHECKS
Oct-09-06  Joshka: <Bob726> <There's going to be 12 games no matter what> Care to explain? They have played 9 games, (Game 5 was never played)...with 2 games to go, that's 11. I hope you are right, and Vlad get's the 'stolen' point taken off Topa's score, so it can be played!

Sneaky: If I don't win tomorrow, the loanshark is going to have my head on a platter :(
Oct-09-06  NateDawg: YES! Second place in the standings! However, I have 2200 chessbucks riding on round 11, so I might not be there long. Or, of course, I could take over the number one spot. =)
Oct-10-06  ICANTPLAYATALL: Hey would you please chek if i have been payed enough i clicked very fast at my cash in tickest and i think i clicked too fast
Oct-10-06  statisticsman: <NateDawg> My net loss for rd. 11 was 11 chessbucks. How did you do. P.S. I am currently first.
