   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

  Domdaniel: Evening, all.
Thanks for that water, Mr. Lark. I needed that.

My apologies, folks. As Mr Dylan sez, I hadda go to the woods for a while.

That's probably some kinda metaphor. In practice, I just went a few days without turning a computer on, to see what it was like. I passed the time by reading, writing, and -- hadn't done this for years -- playing through chess games the old-fashioned way, on a board.

But I missed you all. So I came back.

I suspect that *everyone* here is nicer than I am, but never mind ...

Thanks for keeping the place operational, btw.

  Domdaniel: <Jess> -- <a game in which I believe I resigned on move 8.>

My very first competitive chess game -- when I was allowed, with some reluctance, to play on the bottom board of my school team -- ended when I was mated in six moves.

But we pick ourselves up, don't we? They gave me a second chance, even more reluctantly, and I won every other game and was top board by the end of the year. Goes to show. Or something.

Domdaniel: <Jess> Did you say "forty" pages? Er.

Nothing much to report. Time flies when you're inert. I was.

Read some books, though. And wrote some stuff.

Domdaniel: <"our computer has selected you... blah blah">

I'm with Eyal on this one. I tend to hang up quickly. I'd <like> to play with them, bamboozle them, shake their faith in capitalism or zoroastrianism or ut'napishtim or whatever they happen to believe in. But in practice they're just a hassle, so I don't.

We just had an election here. Some politicians still believe that ringing doorbells increases their chances of getting votes. The fools.

I realized that I don't have politics, I have aesthetics: the only thing I really object to is stupidity.

And there's an awful lot of it about.

  Domdaniel: <achieve> -- <In Paris, innerviewing a lovely lady? >

Ahh.

For some obscure reason, this *never* happens. Paris seems to keep me at arm's length.

Two of my former girlfriends live there, which could be the reason.

The king returns to thwart those attempts off and defend his position.

Domdaniel: <twinlark> ... uh, if my forum was just about to fall *off* the edge of the world ... does that mean that it's been *in* the world, all this time?

Oh god.

PS. Just read Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang. Bloody great.

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> I started a rumor that you were in the <south of France interviewing Uma Thurman>.

I also started a rumor that you are rightful heir to the <English Throne>, but damned if I'm gonna scroll back 500 pages to find it.

jessicafischerqueen: <Doggimus> has been active here and in the <Blako> forum.

You'll be pleased to know that <Bill> has given both his <socket puppets> their own forum, that a <slomarko> clone was arguing with <the real slomarko>, but there does seem some hope of a Constitutional Settlement.

<Dom> That <Austrialian Western> written by <Nick Cave> that I was touting- It's based (very loosely) on the <Kelly saga>
