   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <posting blunders> Hmm, heh, WIST. But it's just a single example, innit? What we need are <necessary and sufficient> conditions for blunders, posting of.

Being an idiot isn't good enough.

Well, actually it serves me just fine, but in *this* case it isn't good enough.

Ignore me. Small impending-doom panic attack here. Soon I'll have to disconnect this device -- it's ancient, it's even got wires -- and hope I'll be able to reconnect at the other end...

Jun-29-07  WBP: <Dom> <How do I post a blunder?> Just follow my example and you'll never fail!
Jun-29-07  Ziggurat: <Dom> I happened to notice an old quote of yours at <blingice>'s profile page, where you wrote that you <used to be a po-mo ho>. Thought you might be interested in a Chinese web site I stumbled over independently: www.pomoho.com

It's a kind of Chinese YouTube. The name/URL seems to be a mangled transcription of "baomihua", the Chinese word for "popcorn".

jessicafischerqueen: I predict <Dom> wins with a score of <11/11>.

And I should know, I just got a bronze medal in <Wilson> prediction contest by picking <Van Wheely> to win alla time.

Nobody else ever picked him to win!!

Jun-30-07  WBP: <Dom> I only hope that as I am writing this now (4:18 pm, Mountain Standard Time) some poor sucker, a queen and a rook down, is offering you a draw, which you, to protract the agony, are "seriously" pondering as he sweats helplessly, wishing he'd never been paired with the famous <Domdaniel>, and that as you're "thinking" about his offer, The Swedish Bikini Team shows up with a fresh keg of Guiness, and that you win the tournament, and because of the upset nature of your victory, you become an instant celebrity in Ireland, and that the Irish people flock to this site to find out more about their new hero and read your forum and understand your genius and then elect you next Prime Minister of Ireland. And that in the ensuing sex scandal, you're found totally innocent, because it was all consensual (and, as was brought out in the trial, good, a disclosure that delighted the courtroom), and that you are re-elected many times, become World Chess champion, you write your memoirs, and that when Tom Cruise tries unsuccessfully to buy the rights, he's so overwhelmed by despair that he gives up acting and becomes a meat inspector, and that you have many, many children and grandchildren. A modest hope, but one can only hope for the possible.

jessicafischerqueen: An eerie silence descends on <Frogspawn> as our <Heroic Leader> sails off to battle the <Grendel> in single handed combat:

Over the Board.

Penelope (anyone seen my needles?)

Jul-02-07  mack: <Dom> Hard cheese about Round 2, chum. Terribly annoying position you were stuck in. Looks like you're getting your eye in, though - I'm sure you're wiping Herr Healy off the board as we speak.

Jul-02-07  mack: Well done <Dom>, the first of many!
Jul-02-07  Ragh: <mack: Well done <Dom>> I might have missed it, but did the dominion say he conquered it already? If so, then my congrats too.
Jul-02-07  WBP: <Mack> Where are you getting <Dom's> results? How is he doing? (etc.)

Jul-03-07  Eyal: <was that him playing the <English> opening?>

If you're referring to his game from round 3, I think it qualifies as a (Closed) Catalan - which breaks his <Peninsular Rule>, btw...

I thought <Doormouse> was over?

Jul-03-07  Eyal: <Deffi> Yeah, I think so too...

As for the opening: the opening moves of the game were 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 Nbd7 4.d4 e6 5.O-O c5 6.c4 Be7, and it's even tagged officialy as E07.

Jul-03-07  IdleNomad: Morning, all. I say, chaps, everything is so *unfamiliar* - with the possible exception of that old asteriskian mode of emphasis... well, I'm not going to *shout*, am I, except perhaps in frustration? - unfamiliar identity, unfamiliar weird hotel computer (my own laptop is humming away happily in the background but refuses to connect to these odd 'net' things...) so...

Hey, I don't have to prove who I am, do I? Because I'm not.

As some of you have seen, I've discovered a hitherto unsuspected talent for miniatures -- a 15-move loss and a 16-move win. The loss was probably the worst game of chess I've played in my entire life: a brainstorm on move 5, a totally unsound piece sac against an IM, and another piece dropped soon after. I could see him thinking "okay, so they wanted to expand the tournament, but why are they accepting entries from homes for the bewildered? Unless he's a Homeless Bewildered. Looks like it."

The bad bish to end all bad bishes led to another loss in round 2. I was trying to test Bill's theory -- a bad bishop is only in your head, or something -- but I got it wrong.

Luckily round 3 made up for some of the damage and banished the spectre of 0/9. Now... we shall see.

I'll be back in some form or another, I hope...
