 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> -- <Er <Dom> no trying to trick me with <Ramones> allusions either. > A confession. Much of the time, I don't know what I'm alluding to. I just think "that sounds familiar" and I bung it in. It takes a genuinely erudite person like your good self to catch these accidental allusions. |

| Oct-03-07 | | achieve: <Dom> How long has it been since you had a delicious rijstafel with satay? |
|
Oct-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Both together? About 20 years. Does it show? |
|
| Oct-03-07 | | achieve: Yes, it shows in your frivolous spelling, my fr&... |
|
| Oct-03-07 | | achieve: <Dom> Never mind, I just had a chuckle when reading your <Food $3> post a few pages back-- In Dutch it is rijsttafel and Saté. You seemed to translate according to how it sounded, some 20 years ago... I missed it originally, in my own frivolity.. |
|
| Oct-03-07 | | achieve: <Dom> And following your very interesting Boulevard research, I ran into an article this morning, dealing with various aspects of the evolution, migration and expansion of Indo-European language. Fascinating read, I must say. But it is in Dutch so prolly little sense in posting the link here, but I might want to ask you a few sensible questions, tomorrow maybe.. |

 | | Domdaniel: <achieve> Satay [or sate] is a Malay word -- the -ay spelling is the usual one in English now. As for [rice+table] rijstafel, I'd looked it up -- I thought there were two f's. I didn't think of the double t. My Chambers dictionary has three spellings: rijstafel, rijstafel, & reistafel. If I was being phonetic I'd have gone with the last one, but I think I tend to remember words visually. No ear, unlike you. |
|
| Oct-03-07 | | achieve: <Dom> Ahh, I figured 'my' spelling of sate might be somehow incorrect, but in Dutch it is rijsttafel (double t). The main thing, of course, is the versatility in both Chinese- and Indian Cuisine.. I always feel like a kid in a candy-store when ordering from the 47 page menu... |
|
Oct-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: Argh. <three spellings: rijstafel, rijstafel, & reistafel.> should have been <three spellings: rijstafel, rijsttafel, & reistafel.> So the two t's exist also in English. I agree about Indian & Chinese food. Nothing like a menu where *everything* is appealing -- unlike certain other types of food where nothing is. I just cannot eat traditional Irish/British meat+potato dishes. Rijs, Rijs, Rijs, dank u. |

 | | Stonehenge: <I know there are also some Dutch sailboat words in Russian.> The words I know are kajuta from kajuit and trjum from 't ruim. I'm afraid I don't know the English words. |

Oct-04-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: hi <Stony>!!
That's because there are no English words for those parts of a sailboat. Sailboats, of course, were invented by the Irish in 1917, long before the advent of English. I hope that's cleared matters up.

 | | Stonehenge: <Sailboats, of course, were invented by the Irish in 1917>
Oh no, most magnificent and merciful majesty, master of the universe, protector of the meek, whose nose I'm not worthy to pick, the Swiss already invented sailboats in 1719. The treaty of Utrecht was in 1917. |
|
| Oct-04-07 | | achieve: <landgenoot> Her majesty wants to cause confusion and disturb Frogs♙'s natural flow of exchanging thoughts and ideas, for some reason... which is either brilliant or just plain annoying... Just saying. |

Oct-04-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Not so, Good Dutchman!
The <Treaty of Utrecht> was in fact not signed in 1917. My dedication to not ever GOOGLING anything is the soundest guarantee of the veracity and relevance of my thoughts and ideas. Also, there is no natural flow to <Frogspawn>. It is a river that flows in two directions at once, both downhill- a la <Escher>, who in fact was born in the Belgian city of <Utrecht> at some point in time. When, I'm not sure. You see I rely solely on memory.
Now if I could only remember what move to play in the White Sicilian with my knights on b3 and and c3 when the cursed blackguard unleashes his b5... It happened again today!!
I don't know if I remembered the right move, but I remember winning the game. Heh.
Regards,

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ooh I remember now-- Na5, then he hopped to... hang on... NO! I remember now. My knights on b3 and c3 and it was MY move. So I played Na4 in order to provoke his b5-- then I hopped him to b6 supported by my dark square bishop as he had his dark square bishop on the a1-h8 diagonal... Heh.
Stupid Dragon.
I love when they play the Dragon.
His Queenside "attack" didn't fare so well with my knight stuck in his throat like a barbed Amazonian fish- Regards,

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <dominus> what on earth are you doing up in the middle of the night again?? I'm sorry the <Links> didn't work. It's a great site except you never know when the links are going to actually play or not. In fact, depending on God knows what, sometimes they play and sometimes they don't. I just watched <The Departed> from the same website and it played no problem. but my <Fawlty Towers> links won't play this week for some reason. Regards,

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Got it. Great video. Looks like <Le Bataclan 1972> -- a one-off performance in Paris with Cale, Reed & Nico (I eventually saw all three play live, individually) -- which I already have on audio CD. This prob'ly explains the absence of Mo Tucker, also the absence of drumming noises... |
