Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <Deffi> We're still some distance from those endgames, but I hope we can get to work on them properly now, both in <Nightranger>'s new Ending Forum and in Brent's workshop.

I'm thinking more about our options forum-wise in the next 24 hours. But you'll carry on with Strategy, yes?

(A) 29.Kh2 Rc4

(B) 29.Kh2 Qb5

(C) Any other lines??

  OhioChessFan: I'll go with Rc4. What might GMAN play? Re4? h6? h5?
Nov-25-06
Premium Chessgames Member
  Domdaniel: Thanks, Ohio.
29.Kh2 Rc4 it is.

I'm not sure what else is viable for him - maybe 29...Qb5 or 29...Re4 or 29...Qc6...

A lot of 'lesser' moves like 29...Kh8 have been busted. As for our next move, the idea seems to be that 30.R1f2 is good in all but a few specific case - <madhair> has them on his forum, plus a recent post on the gamepage.

Thanks.

Domdaniel: OK, then, movetime minus ten, we're lookin' good:

<Ohio> takes 29...Rc4

<madhair> takes 29...Qc6 [etc]

And if anyone else wants to volunteer, then maybe 29...Qb5 is worth a look?

Domdaniel: What would you like to prove today?

MORAL ARGUMENT

(1) In my younger days I was a cursing, drinking, smoking, gambling, child-molesting, thieving, murdering, bed-wetting bastard.

(2) That all changed once I became religious.

(3) Therefore, God exists.

http://www.godlessgeeks.com/LINKS/G...

Nov-25-06  mack: I'm still all of the things you describe in (1). Except a bed-wetter; I'm not, y'know, a pervert or something.

  Domdaniel: THE ARGUMENT FROM BED-WETTING

(1) <mack> admits to some terrible things

(2) Some of the great thinkers of the past were bed-wetters

(3) Therefore, God exists.

Nov-25-06  mack: <<mack> admits to some terrible things>

Gulp. Er... I've found God, everything's okay now. Happy?

OhioChessFan: I am rather devout in my religious beliefs, and I must agree that many people make inane appeals as to why they believe. The reason I believe, is because the evidence points me there. The anedotal appeals that Domdaniel mentions are not worth much in discerning the truth of the matter.
Nov-25-06  jepflast: <Domdaniel>

Sorry I haven't been responding to the messages in my forum... I've just been checking the main forum the last few days.

Also, I assumed workshops were not necessary for move 29. Drop me a line again on move 30.

Domdaniel: <Jep> Got that. Crossed wires. A couple of times I think I just missed you on the main page - and went to yr forum instead. No matter. Will do. Move 30 wd be good.

Domdaniel: <Ohio> I almost - idiotically - wrote "thanks for not taking offence". Which would have been idiotic, and indeed much the same kind of idiot thinking as the sort of stuff I was satirising. And we agree that idiots are idiots are idiots, whether or not they have any particular beliefs...

I'll stop now. This, I mean. Arrgh.

Domdaniel: Is it just me, or did everyone go slightly nuts today?

Don't all answer at once.

Nov-26-06  mack: This all reminds me of a sign my grandfather had hanging above his desk for about forty years:

He who drinks gets drunk;
He who gets drunk goes to sleep;
He who goes to sleep does not sin;
He who does not sin goes to Heaven:
So let's all drink and go to Heaven

Nov-26-06  hitman84: <Domdaniel>I feel the timing of the release of the book is not great but it was like now or never.

Richard Dawkins and other athiests are obvioulsy terrified to see the increase in religious beliefs among people around the world(esp USA) but I dont feel attacking religion is gonna help. Its only gonna cause more unrest.

If you believe in something and its wrong. there are two ways I can make you realise that your belief is wrong by explaining it to you in a calm manner or trashing you scolding you or fighting against you..

but you can put the blame on politics which is the sole reason for the increase in religious beliefs.

Domdaniel: <hitman> I don't really want to get into this at all, but... I picked up the Dawkins book while buying a copy of the new novel by my <actual> favorite writer, Thomas Pynchon. And I found Dawkins so fascinating I haven't even started the Pynchon book yet. I'd read other books by Dawkins, and thought he was getting a bit tedious and repetitive - but this one is impressive.

Dawkins goes to great lengths to explain that he is not 'attacking' God or even 'attacking' religion. He is simply looking at the question from a calm scientific viewpoint, assessing evidence etc.

I think he's naive to think this might actually change minds. But he also quotes some of the hate letters he's got in the past ('rot in hell you commie atheist' being one of the mildest) so I assume he knows the territory better than me.

btw, I don't think <either> of your 'two ways' <really> changes somebody's mind. Violence and fear etc can make them pretend to change on the outside while clinging to the 'heresy' all the more strongly inside. And 'rational debate' - which is in fact what Dawkins tries to do - almost never convinces people to change their minds. The psychological way of putting it is that we have huge 'ego investment' in our beliefs, whatever they are.

In general, I try to avoid having beliefs. This is actually impossible, however. So I believe that the pizza I just ordered from a reputable source will arrive soon and will not poison me. I could be wrong, though...

Domdaniel: Argh. First I give a link to a website called 'godless geeks'. Then I admit to living on pizza while playing chess online. Forget the 'godless' bit - the geekishness could hardly be more blatant, could it?

I'm off for some <cordon bleu> kippers in rocket sauce and a nice cup of Chateau de Chatterly instead...

There was a young fellow named Crocket
Who had an affair with a rocket
If you saw them out there
You'd be tempted to stare
But if you ain't tried it, don't knock it.
