   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Open Defence: <Dom> you need to have an evil twin to collect the award since <Domdaniels> were nominated for the award and NOT <Domdaniel> .... two Idle Nomads.... ? This must be the work of the evil Frogspawn

Domdaniel: <mack> I was just over in your place quoting Shagspere when I noticed you'd been over here doing the same. Great minds, or that time of year, or whatever.

Remember that dagger? I should really have replied "mack, the knife" but I never got round to it.

Despite never doing anything more physically demanding than playing chess, I seem to have ripped a muscle in my back. So I'm being terse, between groans.

Bit of a crock zone here lately, really.

Domdaniel: <Deffi> *Domdaniels*?? Must be the Spelling Bee Award, then. I'll send Idle, in drag .
Dec-22-07  achieve: Heh

Dom Dagger meets Mackie Messer

Brilliant work by Kurt Weill on the music by the way...

Dec-22-07  achieve: <Dom> OK - so they're related, Ray and Alex...

Domdaniel: <Niels> Yes ... Alex 'the Hurricane' and Ray 'the Raindrop' ...
Dec-22-07  achieve: <Dom> Heh... funny you should say that! (Hurricane Higgins is still alive, eh? -- Ronnie the Rocket made a 147 in a final frame decider at the "UK" last weekend...)

I was searching for some footage of the russian pronunciation of Alekhine- and I found a clip where it sounded like - 'Ljechinzje - the apostrophe at the beginning for the (mostly) swallowed "A"...

But <kingscrusher> ("Allakine") and especially Americans make a real mess of it -- with some of the names mentioned at YouTube I have no clue whom they're talking about...

Things like that eat away at me, I found out.

<Your back injury> You need a good massage, my friend.

Domdaniel: <Niels> Ah, pronunciations. Or orthoepy as we call it in the trade. Have you heard Euwe called 'Yoo'?

I pedantically call Pirc 'peerts', too (cf debate on Pirc page re 'Perk'). And I think I read somewhere that the 'correct' pronunciation of Alekhine -- ie, Alekhine's own version, pre-revolutionary posh -- is more like 'Al-lyokh-een'.

With Russian names it's often a case of whether they were transliterated into French, German or English etc -- like Jussupow/Yusupov. 'Alekhine' is clearly the French version. Same with Petroff/Petrov ...

Euwe? Wheuwe?

I <need> painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs (better living through chemistry), though I'm sure a massage would be nice too.

  jessicafischerqueen: G'day Dom!

I'm sorry to hear about you back boo-boo. I had to take codeine once for a back muscle strain. they are NO FUN.

Try to avoid <oxycodone> if you can manage, however.

Well you were supposed to recieve your award last night when the "polls close" but anarchy appears to be reigning at <mannBee>. However, I just counted and your lead for <Best Post> is now mathematically insurmountable.

Some are already voting for Best Games collection now.

I would be honored to accept your award for you-- I accepted mine with an exceedingly self-indulgent and lengthy speech in which I burst out into tears frequently...

However, sending <Idle Nomad> or maybe <See See> if you can find him--

All good ideas, I believe.

Aruba!!

WannaBe: Congratulations, you won the Best Written Post of 2007 Caissar!
Dec-23-07  Ziggurat: <Thanks for the Ballard info. I've met and interviewed him a few times> I'm not worthy!!

<I think he's actually quite shy.> I have that impression as well. In some interviews, he seems to downplay his own weirdness (which, let's face it, is there) and insist that he is perfectly, almost boringly normal.

Dec-23-07  achieve: Yes, there are a lot of "Best Written Posts", to choose from...

Memorizing a few key-words that made a impression on me, put in the search kibitzing machine, brought up this one- followed by a BRILLIANT <Boys like lists> thread...

Domdaniel: <which post?> Probably a totally blank one. No errors, no insults, no obscenities, no violations, gosh how utterly boring.

Anyway, wheeee. Is the human brain -- even the cynical variety -- programmed to enjoy winning, or what? My back even stopped hurting for the first time in days.

Admittedly, the codeine may have contributed. Even so. Wheee.

Dec-23-07  achieve: <Dom> <<which post?> Probably a totally blank one.>

No, I have just posted "evidence" for my nomination and vote...

PS. We probably posted simultaneously...

Dec-23-07  achieve: <Euwe> You were right about "youwuh" "yoove" "Huey" "oyve" etc...

The first vowel Eu sounds like "lówe" in German or "deux" in French...

Re: Allakine - I got the details off wikipedia and in A-le-khine, the khine part sounds like sheen(e) but with hardly audible "s" sound (tip of tongue bit further back, close but not touching the palate)... The "A" sounding like in "father".

But Russia is a big place so I imagine a lot of variations-- also depending on context...

Dec-23-07  achieve: <And I think I read somewhere that the 'correct' pronunciation of Alekhine -- ie, Alekhine's own version, pre-revolutionary posh -- is more like 'Al-lyokh-een'.> Yes, forgot about the le-part in Alekhine... I too (no kidding) remember to have read that in a previous life and ancient book I guess- that it sounded like Lyokh or Ljoch... But that small flickering little lightbulb is waaaay back somewhere in my memory... It *did* trigger something, with me hardly noticing it...

Domdaniel: <Niels> Heh. Yes, we've had our moments and we've heard the chimes at midnight... but I'd be nowhere without such brilliant collaborators, would I?

It takes eleventeen to tango, but who's counting?

Dec-23-07  achieve: Not me! Here's looking at you "kid"!

jessicafischerqueen: Yes, <Frogspawn> is clearly the best online magazine in all <elevem continents>.

Once you're here, <Euwe> got to the right place all right!!

HAHAHAHA

Get it?

Domdaniel: ... 'ere, if you lot leave a mess I'll just have to <Euwe> up the detritus again, won't I?

You know, Euwe Dam, 'Erbert Euwe, er, vacuum cleaner? Okay? Party on, then.

<Jess> Thanks for leaping to my Defence. You're one hell of a Springer.

Oh heck.

Domdaniel: A mathematical proof of the existence of 23 gods.

Axiom 1: December 25 is Christmas Day in the Christian Calendar.

Axiom 2: December 25 was also the birthday of Mithras. And possibly Zoroaster as well.

Axiom 3: When 23 people are gathered together, the chances that two of them share a birthday are greater than 50%.

Proof: since 2 or 3 deities have the same birthday, there must logically be 23 of them in the room.

Domdaniel: Hi, <Joe>, good to see you. I was just pondering the huge increase in medical specializations ... like, did you have your own personal <Stentorian> to insert those stents you mentioned?
