Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <swarm theory> I actually posted a game of mine here, ages ago, where white didn't play Qg4, but 0-0 and f4-f5, at which point I hit him very hard with ...Nf4! and he crumbled. It also featured an attack without queens and mate in about 30 moves, but was otherwise quite different.

The most dangerous lines for black, I think, involve an early Nb5 aimed at c7/d6, and maybe Nf3-g5 as well, supported by f4. When black's best bet is probably ...Rxg5, grabbing a centre pawn or two for the sacrificed exchange. Tres swarmy.

Dec-18-07  mack: <Marjory Razorblade, yes?> No thanks, I'm trying to cut back. Re the drunkard who tore you apart -I've heard a very similar story from another Irish native. Symptomatic of Irish society?! Never!

<Mack attack!>

Want to go destroy what's left of your mind? Try a couple of these:

<Fill a shot glass approximately three-quarters full with green chartreuse, and the remainder with black sambuca. Add a couple of drops of Tabasco branded pepper sauce, and shoot.>

  Domdaniel: <long diagonal>

Journal of Clinical Forensic Medicine: Wounding Patterns Shoulder to waist blows (diagonal) accounted for 82% of attacks, 71% of attackers used a long diagonal slash with an average cut length of 34 cm … http://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...

Riding Figures
Riding across the long diagonal may be used to change direction, and is especially helpful in a large lesson, to get the group to change direction… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riding...

Materials Research : Knoop Microhardness Anisotropy … Length of the long diagonal of the indentation as well as the width … the long diagonal of the indenter parallel to <001> was assumed to be 0... http://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...

Domdaniel: <Niels> Come back, do, you're not really "beyond help". Not the kind of 'help' we provide here, anyhow.

And here's somebody I 'helped' earlier. *long pause* ... He what? Oh, he did, did he? And what am I s'posed to do, a Lazarus routine? Sorry viewers, that's, er, all we have time for tonight, see you tomorrow, unless Ireland explodes.

Dec-19-07  achieve: <Dom> Yes I know, I'll have to do it myself... Actually, I'm having a cold and am a bit feverish -- as you know that makes for perfect conditions to act like a child and be a full-time nuissence...

BUT you guys have put up a lot of links and a annotated game for the Frogspawnees to check out...

hmmm...

Dec-19-07  JoeWms: <Dom: Irreplaceable and irrepressible.>

All that, and then some.

I broke my body, Dom, but my mind is intact. So have at it, dear friend!

Dec-19-07  Eyal: <Dom> Regarding your French game - an interesting point about the opening is that the position you reached after 12.Ne2 is a familiar one, but usually arrived at via different move order and <with an extra tempo for White>, thus:

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 Ne7 7.Qg4 cxd4 8.Qxg7 Rg8 9.Qxh7 Nbc6 10.Ne2 dxc3 11.f4 Qa5:

click for larger view

And now it's White's turn, and he usually plays 12.Rb1 or Ng3. Out of 58 games in chessbase database featuring the diagram position, White has reached it 55 times in the "right" way, and only 3 times in the "wrong" way.

However, it appears to be an almost meaningless subtlety compared to the suicide that your opponent committed with 14.Qxc3??... In any case, you finished him very nicely.

Dec-19-07  Eyal: Actually, I should have said that the opening line above has somewhat different moves than your game, not just move order – strictly speaking it’s not the Swarm, but 5...Bxc3+... In the Swarm line, the normal move for White is 12.Nf3, as you pointed out in your comments.

Domdaniel: <Eyal> Yeah, I noticed that oddity too - I did a database search and was amazed at how many times the position came up, and more amazed that White had actually won some. Then I figured out the right way/wrong way discrepancy.

At the end, White seems to walk into a sui-mate. But if his king runs the other way after ...Rh1+, I don't bother with the paltry knight on c1 - I check again on f1, and again on the g-file to pick up his rook. So he's toast anyway.

Domdaniel: <mack> Is "contains tits for those of you at work" part of the title, or just you being helpful?

I think it's a pretty good title in its own right. Not sure what for, however.

Dec-19-07  mack: <Is "contains tits for those of you at work" part of the title, or just you being helpful?>

As much as I believe that 'titilation' only really works when it sneaks up on ya, I don't want people getting sacked in the name of Uncle Bob. Even if he did say, in one of his less cryptic on stage babbles, ' I don't like work, and I don't like school, and I don't like it when you have to do a bunch of @#$% you don't wanna do.' Dull compulsion of economic relations, and all that.

Yes, as you suspected, you've actually explained in great detail before about the <Swarm>... and what better forum for it than <Frogspawn>??

Nice win with the <Swarm> in your "away game."

Was it played in <Old Trafford>, by any chance?

I will take a closer look at it on the weekend when I'm not at work.

Heh. I'm at "work" right now actually.

Anyhoo just to let you know I've just voted you for <Best Forum Profile> in the <coveted and prestigious MannBee Awards>.

Domdaniel: <mack> 'Sapient' Suttles as player of the day? How poetic.
Dec-21-07  mack: <'Sapient' Suttles as player of the day?>

Indeed. I've just given the obligatory salty salute over there, coz I thought I ought to.

By the way, have you ever come across Gerzadowicz in your tracks? I bought his 'Journal of a Chess Original' last week for barely a penny and I was blown away. He's a CCGM who really should appeal to the froginati: I don't think he's touched more than 2300, but his explanation of his thought processes, plus his tendency to lob in aribitary Shakespeare quotations has almost instantly made him one of my favourite chess writers. I came across the following in The Campbell Report:

<For 51 years I've been toddling, wandering, stumbling thru life in wide-eyed wonder. Such fun trying to figure it all out. To gain understanding. I say that is most important. Because all else flows from that. To Learn. To Grow. And we compete to test that, to see how we're doing. It feels good to win because it validates our studying, our learning, the person we have grown into.

"And we can't do it alone. We can practice alone, study alone, but we can't be sure we are learning well and true. And when we know this, W or L not important, but how we W or L - the nature of the contest. Does or not it indicate that we have understood? And how much (never 100%)? And where do we go from here? That is why we compete. And I am very sad to see people miss that (miss the point) by using Fritz ...>

Punkpendium II for sure.*

* Yes, it bloody well does exist. Why haven't you contributed yet?

Dec-21-07  achieve: On a side- side note:

I wondered how "you" pronounced Alekhine:

or

B: Al - yechin, or

Thank you.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Dom>!

You are leading the voting, and almost sure to win the <coveted and prestigious MannBee Award> for "best written post".

If you don't believe in these kinds of things, you can just elegantly REFUSE the award.

Like <Leonard Cohen> refused the <Governor General's Award> for best fiction, saying he "didn't beleive in awards."

Me- on the other hand--- I've been obsessively polishing my <MannBee Award> for "best profile" until my hands fall off.

I don't believe in Awards unless I win them.

does that count as an "ethical stance"?

I need to know...

  jessicafischerqueen: Hey <Dom>!

I just left a <Giant Extinct Moa> in your email box.

I was really upset about something (you'll see what when you read it) so apologies for the insanity of my rant.

It's just that when I'm feeling really, really insane it helps to tell it to a friend who is really, really sane.

I hope you are not offended that I regard you to be very, very, sane.

Best regards,
JFQ

Dec-22-07  Ziggurat: <I just *know* that JG Ballard reads that Journal of Clinical Forensic Medicine.> He was an editor at the Royal Society journal Chemistry & Industry; this is an interesting link with some of his writings for them: http://www.ballardian.com/chemical-...

Domdaniel: <dear Jessica> I am deeply wounded and mortally offended that you consider me sane, when my greatest ambition is to be mad like you.

Domdaniel: <Zig> Thanks for the Ballard info. I've met and interviewed him a few times, a deeply perplexing experience. Most writers etc seem quite pleased to learn that one actually knows their work, but Ballard sort of backs away nervously, as though anyone who reads him must be psychotic. I think he's actually quite shy.

I need to know... will you be my stand-in stand-up on stand-by?
