Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

after 30.fxg6 fxg6

31.R1f2 -- jepflast

31.Qg5 -- Ohio

31.Qf4 -- themadhair [tbc]

Agreed? I'll post this lot soon.

I can prob'ly manage my own relief, thanks all the same... ;]

  OhioChessFan: <dd> I'll nominate you as my blundercheck forum. In Thorsson's line: <30...fxg6 31.R1f2 Re4 32.Qg5 Rf8 33.Rxf8+ Bxf8 34.Qd8 Qe8 35.Qxe8 Rxe8 36.b4 Be7!? 37.b5 axb5 38.Rb2 Rb8 39.Rxb5 Bd8 and it's gonna be a draw. White improvement needed.>

I am trying 34. Rc2, with ideas of Rc5 or Rc8. I can blunder to beat Kramnik, but is there something I'm missing?

Domdaniel: <Anyone> There's also some interest in 31.Rf7, if anyone wants to tackle it.

<Ohio> I'm just checking that with my version of Thor's line - give me a few mins, I'm not as fast as he is...

  Domdaniel: <Ohio> I think the main Thorsson line is the one with 31.Qg5 Rc2 32.Rf7 Ree2 33.Kh1 Re6 34.b4 Rb2 35.Kg1 Rxb4 36.Ra7 Rb2 37.Ra8+ (37.Rff7? Bh6! 38.Qxh6 Re1+ 39.Kh2 Rxg2+ gives Black a perpetual check)Re8 38.Rxe8+ Qxe8 39.Qxd5+ Kh8 40.Qxd6, which looks winning for White.

That's an early version, so attention switched to other moves like 34...Rc8 instead.

I think the line you gave with 31.R1f2 was Thor's way of saying that R1f2 wasn't as good as the immediate 31.Qg5.

And anyway, weren't you taking 31.Qg5 lines - with 31.R1f2 for <jep>? Some confusion somewhere... I'll copy this to your forum anyway.

  OhioChessFan: I'm taking Qg5 lines.
This was just my own suggested improvement for White in a R1f2 line Thorsson mentioned on the main page. I didn't want to embarrass myself on the main page by some obvious blunder.

Domdaniel: <Ohio> Re the actual position, I'm not sure if it's a draw in the end. My first thought was: how can white make progress, no king entry, etc. Second thought: aha, black can't do anything either after, say, 40.Rb2 - if the black king emerges, check it and play Bxd8... and meanwhile work the Kh2 over to the queenside? Mm - maybe it doesn't work anyway.

I've a feeling this has been looked at, though, and somebody found improvements - somewhere. But it's technically jep's line anyway with 31.R1f2 - it even transposes into one of the 30.R1f2 vars, doesn't it?

Does this make sense?

OhioChessFan: I'll run it on Jepflast's page and see what happens. Wouldn't be the first time I suggested some ghastly move.
Nov-28-06  themadhair: I'll take the Qf4 line. Could use some quiet time during the midweek...

Domdaniel: <madhair> Thanks. Is it OK to include 31.Rf7 as well - as a sort of 'others' forum? We can jiggle it later if necessary?

Dom - <stevens> and <you vs yourself> have previously agreed to make their fora available at any time. So if analytical fora lebensraum is needed, don't hesitate. Just mention my magic moniker and all doors will be opened to you...Was that variation tree template any use or has RV basically covered that ground?

31.Rf7 appears to lead to a draw. Check <themadhair> forum.

Domdaniel: <twinlarynx> Are you the Doppelganger? We're all terribly paranoid now, because... actually, I can't remember why. Spooky, that.

Just saw an advert for <twink's final performance>. Somebody else entirely.

Thanks for the reminder re <stevens> and <you vs yourself>. I'm not 100% certain that both are still available - <stevens> has been posting regularly in various places. I will check...

The Tree - it's the explanatory model we all aspire to... but who actually fills it in?

In return for doing almost no RL work this week, I'll be doing double amounts next week. I may have to pass the buck to Ohio for all of Mon-Fri... we shall see. If you're in any sense <around> then, chirrup up.

Domdaniel: <Forum persons> Any thoughts on whether we should bring any more forums online when GMAN moves?

I'm thinking perhaps of splitting 31.Qg5 between two forums, along the lines of RV's forum -- maybe 31...Rc2 ('Rooks of Death') in one forum, the rest in another.

<Ohio> could continue hosting the general Qg5 lines -- and somebody else takes Rooks of Death? Just an idea.

Any thoughts?

And if anyone wants a change, let me know.

OhioChessFan: I think Rc2, Re2, Re6, Re4, all deserve a forum. I don't know how practical that is, so maybe Rc2 and all Re? would be a good idea. The problem is the ideas for each are so different that we may be undermining the point of forums-not only to find good moves, but be sure we can dismiss what we think are bad moves.

Domdaniel: <Ohio> I agree. We probably don't have the resources for a lot of forums, though... you stay with it for now, and we'll see what can be done.

If anyone else would like to split Qg5 with Ohio, just shout.

Domdaniel: <Ohio, jepflast, mack, madhair> On reflection, I think it might be too complicated trying to move forums around - a line could easily spring back to life.

On the other hand, 31.Qg5 is way in front already. I suspect it will only be stopped if it contains a gaping hole. So there's a logic to dividing it up. <twinlark> sez we can use <stevens>'s forum, for posting only - this would mean no active forum moderator.

Is it worth the trouble of sending some Qg5 lines there? Or are they better off in one place - Ohio's?

I'll leave things alone for now. If anyone has any bright ideas, shout.

Open Defence: <Dom> better to keep the Qg5 line as one.. then the analysts can bounce the lines off each other.. otherwise one branch may get a lot of work.. but another zilch...

Domdaniel: Hi <Deffi> - yeah, I agree. It's just <guilt> ya know? Feel I should be doing something proactive, not just saying "carry on chaps, toodle-oo..."

Weird. I don't even <do> guilt in RL.
