   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <Monad> I'm particularly impressed by your work on 30.R1f2 h6 -- even late last night that possibility was still worrying me, but you seem to have pretty much refuted it. May I quote you?

I haven't time to really engage my own analytic brain - I just jump around trying to keep up with everyone else.

We shall see inside two hours...

BTW - I 'suspect' he won't play 30...Re4, but my reasons are worthlessly intuitive, so...

drat; real life just intervened again and I can't pretend to be out...

Domdaniel: Onwards, risk-takers all... I admit I'd be happier if I thought <all> of the 30.fxg6 voters knew they were playing with fire.

**MARKER DIAGRAM**

We have played 30.fxg6 to reach this position (Black to play):

Domdaniel: <Forumistas, all> Thanks for your efforts in the past couple of days, whether you were running crucial lines (jepflast & themadhair) or doing the dull tidy-up work (Ohio & mack). Or writing poems for me (you know who you are... and thanks.)

Black's next move is totally forced. There are no Zwischenzugs that make sense, and I'm not sure how to spell them anyway. So a brief breather is in order (= 'take ten, fellers') after all that.

So: 30.fxg6 fxg6 31.??

Two obvious contenders: 31.Qg5 ('attack!') and 31.R1f2 ('we meant to play it all along, honest').

I guess they could do with a forum each. Any others??

The other thing that needs doing is this: finding a way to persuade people to use the Endgames forum. The idea of reaching endgame positions in an ordinary forum, then passing them over for expert analysis hasn't really taken off yet.

Any ideas?

It's German. "Have something to say"

Domdaniel: <chessmoron> it may look like Yurpean, but it's really purest Aussie. It means "I am the ghost of Christmas past, and we do it on the beach, so you hemispherically challenged lot can just keep on bloody shivering..."

And <moi aussi> means <me Australian>.

(It's not mine, but remember it from someone (aussi?) few months ago ;)

Nov-28-06  jepflast: <Domdaniel> If it's okay with you, I'll set my forum up for 31. R1f2, but I may take a bit of a break from any actual analysis.
Nov-28-06  twinlark:

Achtung! Achtung! Der Vogelhund macht schnell zum Strand! Achtung!

<Any others>

Some people will go for 31.Qf4 as it attacks the loose pawn on d6 and piles up the armour on the f-file. The obvious response is 31...Qd7 though, which leaves the White Queen looking like a shag on a rook file - maybe a candidate for the Refutation Forum(...)

<finding a way to persuade people to use the Endgames forum>

A suggestion? Sometimes things just need reiterating.

Viszontlatasra barataim!

Valete amici.

Domdaniel: OK, <jep> is taking 31.R1f2, and I've asked Ohio to take the 31.Qg5 line.

Both 31.Qf4 and 31.h4 have some legit appeal, I agree...

Any takers? Maybe <mack> will oblige again? Or <themadhair>?

Nov-28-06  mack: Gimme 31.h4
