Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <mack> phew, thanks. Does either Rc1 or Qg5 appeal to your sense of the absurd?
Nov-26-06  mack: There once was a kibitzer called mack
Who was asked which move he would back.
He replied in a flash,
'Why, Rc1 is trash,
Let me take Qg5 please, Jack'

  Domdaniel: <mack> Let's say 30.Qg5

I've a feeling it was examined and rejected before, but it could be more amusing than the limp-wristed Rc1.

God, I'm insulting <rook moves> now.

Domdaniel: <mack> I like it when people can compose limericks faster'n I can think. Agreed: Qg5 it be.

Domdaniel: this is how things stand, then:

30.Qf4 - <Ohio>

30.Qg5 - <mack>

30.fxg6 - <themadhair> pending etc

30.R1f2 - <jepflast> to be confirmed

and just those 4, plus reg'lars.

The two to-be-confirmed people have previously shown willing re move 30, so it should work out. I hope.

So <Ohio> is off with the Queen

And <mack>, a square further, I ween.

Nov-27-06  themadhair: How does a forum dedicated to collecting questions that the world want to ask GMAN sound? The basic idea I am thinking is that memebers of the world team post their questions and the most common and/or the most interesting get added into the forum leaders profile to be passed onto GMAN.

I am sure GMAN will also have a few questions about us to.

Nov-27-06
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <madhair> Good idea, but personally I wouldn't care to confuse our fragile forum ecology by throwing that into the mix just now - simply because it has no immediate bearing on the game.

Later will be a different story. The whole matter of subsequent communication with GMAN seems to be open. I can't imagine he'd want to read all zillion pages of kibitzing... and there will be many questions...

Hmm. Now that you mention it, a collection of such questions would have amusement value, at least.

  Domdaniel: Horrible Thought, #323.

- You know all those movies/TV shows/etc where chess is grotesquely misrepresented? Say, the crime has been solved and the aloof-mysterious detective (AMD) is playing chess with his eager-beaver-smartass assistant (EBSA)? And EBSA says "I see it now, I move my queen, you push a pawn, and it's bye-bye queen. Nice. But what if I just do *this* instead [moves]?"

AMD: "Oh, that, hmmm. You were right, by the way, to be suspicious of Alonzo Klein's butler. Those blond highlights? Way too retro. [moves]. Checkmate, I think."

After Fritz-Kramnik (2nd game) they'll NEVER get it right.

Nov-28-06  monad:

PANIC STATIONS!

White to move:

<The crux is Black's move Re4>

click for larger view

Having worked on this position for a good number of hours, I know that it is good for us.

But can we reach it? And if so, how?

The components are moves <30 and 31>, with <Re4 and fxg6 from Black,> and <fxg6 and R1f2 from White>.

If 30.fxg fxg 31.R1f2, then Black can and will wriggle out of this. We needn't fear that, but we would have to work a little harder.

If, on the other hand, we play the exchange second, then we have to be sure that Black would be worse off if he did Not play Re4.

Confusing.
The upshot is: <Let me know for sure if Black has to play Re4 after 30.R1f2 !!>

And also: how hard to be have to work to overcome a different move 30...*

Percentages please at this late stage.

Nov-28-06  monad: <DOM>

If ever you needed to rally the troops, now is the hour.

Or: Time and the hour wait for no-one.

Whatever.
If only we could claim an extension.
Try to fathom what I am on about. I put it all as best as I could, but it feels like a giant oil-tanker that needs moving. Can you be the pilot please?

Everybody seems to be involved in this e4 a6 game. I played one of those once. As White. A doddle, if you prevent Black's Nb4 on move 6 I think it was. Anyways, I need breakfast and a good long walk. See what you can achieve.

Nov-28-06  monad: Hiya,

Take a look at the playing boards yourself. Maybe you can plug them a little? It does make it clearer. Besides, I think they look so good :-)

I sometimes wonder what they look like on Opera. I have tested them on Firefox and some of the MSIE's, but not some of the other browsers.

Take care,

not the German word for 'month',
not munthered/monthered yet.
