Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: What am I doingggg? Why am I so innarested in <chess> all of a sudden, rabbiting on about <Inny Vations> and other weirdnesses? What happened to the Frogspawn Tradition of <other stuff, arcane, mad, etc>?

Sic transit gloria svindleri

(Latin for 'Gloria, a swindler, is sick in her transit van')

Feb-04-08  achieve: <Domme> Qu'est-ce que were you doing(gggggggg) indeed-- winning, winnable, (even winnish was possible-- chance missed)... Dutchiness, Japonnery, a deranged Orangutan....(usw,enz.)...

In kurtz, I've never, ever before, read so much Mambo Jambo bundled in- (or is it spread over) a single page...

But for an inside obscene server it was an in(ta)resting read.

MERCI !!!

Feb-04-08  achieve: Actually -- "winnish" is far to mondaine... we could use a little more "cachet"-- so I would suggest to spell it like "winniche" the next time, capiche?!

(The number of associations your posts evoked, was quite startling)

DANNY BOY - A CAPELLA (Celtic) HARMONY -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_XJ... (this is actually one of my favourite compositions -- in this clip accompanied by some beautiful images of the Irish countryside, among others... -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jgm...)

"Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glenn to glenn, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy...."

(I promise to not bother you with "music" in the future... too much)

Feb-05-08  brankat: <achieve> Hmmm, I wonder if <Dom> is familiar with the lyrics :-)

Great music Niels! Thank You.

Domdaniel: Heh. Yep. Somewhat familiar. I've even got a recording of an elderly William S Burroughs croaking his way through Danny Boy ... a popular tune, apparently, m'lud.

... and my name *really* is Daniel, despite the other identity used in my articles and chessgames as 'revealed' by Jess ...

Hmm. Don't think I've ever auto-spammed to the extent of eight successive posts before ...

Open Defence: I thought your "real" name was Nomad

There was a Nomad
Who essayed the PRONAD
When the POLITBURO so did decree
Did he win ? Did he lose ? Did he miss mate in 3?
Or did he essay the Queen's Unusual Enterprising Repartee ?

Domdaniel: <Deffi> Heh. Nomad, sadly, is lost in cyberspace, having 'forgotten' his password back to Realityland.

That's the <Queen's Unusually Enterprising Easy Repartee>, isn't it?

Domdaniel: <Niels> San Kyu ... my, ah, solo run back there made me realise how much this place depends on your contributions. Not to mention inventive spelling.

As we embark upon <Super Flat Pancake Tuesday> aka <Marre de Grass>, we ... whaat? I sound like a <Farmer in the City> ... isn't that a Scott Walker noise-drenched 'song' about Pasolini? Am I being Boering?

Derangement factor: fanatically mild to extremely moderate.

Feb-05-08  achieve: <Dom> It *is* Mardi Superieure, today (goes remarkably well with pancake and bacon btw), and the derangement fluctuates hin und wieder, probably depending on several factors, as you managed to surprise and confuse yourself in a utterly brilliant way..."playing both sides" as it were ... (I woke up at 4 AM for some reason and after reading it I just slammed the keys et voila) -- this stuff can not be scripted... (I could have gone on for another 8 posts as well)

You did leave an incredible amount of material, also chesswise, that I wanna take a look at later.

Btw <Eyal> posted a link at my place with a hilarious 'Danny Boy'- version

Domdaniel: This is the one day of the year on which I would *not* eat pancakes. I suspect the same (childish? perverse?) attitude underlies my approach to chess -- avoid the 'normal' and 'traditional' at all costs, and never, ever do something just because that's the way it is done.

Domdaniel: <a pedant writes> -- <"from glenn to glenn ..."> That would be, what, a love song from John Glenn (astronaut) to Scott Glenn (actor)?

'Glenn' is usually a name, as in Glenn Gould, Bach-man extraordinaire. 'Glen' with one 'n' means valley.

Except of course in the original Gaelic, where the word is spelt 'gleann' and pronounced 'glown' (as in town & gown).

Or Latin, where the word 'glans' unites the two core Celtic concepts, <clans> and <glens>. And a clan to every glen ...

Further proof that Latin and other Italic languages are descended from an offshoot of Old Celtic.

Feb-05-08  achieve: Confession:

I singlehandedly "changed" the lyrics (added "n") deliberately, because of you mentioning <Glenn Flear>, and because of (D0m)Daniel -- yess.... get it? aha!... I was reminded of the song Danny Boy...

AND I "fixed" the lyrics to accomodate my weird association!

sigh

And to see if anyone would notice and subsequently correct me...

Devious ploy, innit?

I am devious when it's 4 AM -- but YOU CAUGHT ME! Passing with flying colours and etymologically supported...

I blame the Kelts, thenn... They know everything, it seems.

heh

Just thinking... I have a lot of fun reading- and occasionally attempting some wordplay, but when I translate it to Dutch, it somehow feels a bit far-fetched, childish in some way... Must be something psychological, but being funny with wordplay in Dutch I would HAVE to set higher standards in order to not just repeat what has already been done - that sort of thing... But somehow in English, to me, all wordplay is "funny enough"...

Domdaniel: <Niels> I'm ann idiot, thenn. I shoulda knownn. Flear is a mann's best fliend.

Wordplay in a second language -- when so many people are happily brutalizing their first one -- is pretty impressive, innit.

I particularly liked "in(ta)resting" ... however many n's it has.

Feb-05-08  WBP: <Dom> Just looking in for an all-too-brief moment--looks like you guys are up to your usual magical hijinx (is that spelled correctly--looks dreadful).

That <Black Mustang Defence> looks interesting. Like you, I often essay the Dutch, and this seems sort of related. I do agree with your final comment (regarding the opening's ultimate effect on the result of the game). I wonder if Capablance (famously fond of clarity and purity on the chessboard) simply got a little confused with the somewhat unlikely configuration of pieces in the early middle game (the h-rooks gone, the bishop on h8, the two Black Knights on the kingside, both on Black's back rank, and so on)? Almost like a FischerRandom game! (OK, not quite!)

Gotta go brtualize some languages!

Domdaniel: <Bill> -- <Gotta go brtualize some languages!> Why stop there? Go *brtualize* 'em all. If it's spoken or written by humans - or indeed machines - it can be brtualized ... and is.
Feb-05-08  euripides: It's well known that the Dutch are born speaking every human language.

They even have a language spoken only by cows. It's called Frisian.

  Open Defence: <Mardi Superieure> ain't that <Fat Tuesday> ?
Feb-05-08  achieve: Thanks <Domn>, I definitely feel lucky to sail along with you guys occasionally, and the advantages, as well as the limitations, are numerous... If you look at my writing you'll see a lot of the same, as well as a lot of copying.

BUT OCCASIONALLY I JUMP UP

Cheers for being a good sport-- you do stand out in that respect. As does Bill...

I would be astounded if someone could actually be funny in Dutch, without ever having lived here.

Picking up confidence as one goes along is vital--- your opponent slamming his pieces audible to their designated squares would have been enough for me to notice a chance, as you did.

I am preparing for this summer and see what happens...

As picking up on his breathing and expression-- very good.

When Carlsen was 11 he could outplay most Masters, simply because he just knew how to play-- coordinate his pieces, intuitive(-ionally)-- but not knowing even a mere percentage of what you kmow after 30+ years of chess study...

Spar a lot to develop that ruthless technique and convert those advantages.

Domdaniel: <Niels> Brilliant! You, young man, have just talked - well, punned - your way into a job.

<Sparalot - The Musical> needs creators. Several of us - well, me and Jess for starters - can do the words. But the tunes will be composed by Niels, with <gui-tar riffs> by Deffi.

Now, what's it about? A chess playing boxer, Muhammad A. Fischer, who has to contend with prejudice growing up -- mainly cos he's prejudiced against *himself* - but he, well, spars a lot, and lives happily ever after. With the holy grail of chessboxers in his back pocket.

Similarities to <Spamalot> are sheer coincidence. No names have been changed to protect the innocent, as <god almighty, inc> has been hired to provide innocence protection coverage.
