Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Hi <Deffi>, *official congrats on 5000 kibitzes*

Now - how would you like to help with the heavy lifting, removals, etc? If you can find material anywhere on the 31.Qg5 Re2 lines and copy it to <mack>'s forum, maybe? tx

Open Defence: ok... though i wish i had known earlier.. coz its 3:30 am (!) here.. so most likely i will have a look on the morrow and see if there is anything that was missed in the shifting or if it is still lying around waiting to be moved..
Nov-30-06  mack: Dom- yes, 31...Re2 rocks my world.

Nov-30-06  mack: Talkin' timezones? Never heard anything so ridiculous in my life.

Domdaniel: <themadhair> On closer examination, you're right -- dam' transpositions get in everywhere, rooks of death, or no rooks of death...

So, yeah -- take ...Re6 AND ...Re4.
If you think it might simplify matters.
thanks

Nov-30-06  mack: <Domdaniel> Like two women who have been living together for a long time, it appears our 'occasions' have coincided. Happy 3000th eh, chum?

OhioChessFan: Dom, it seems to me 31...Rc2 should have its own forum. If not, I'll cover it in mine.

FWIW, my limerick above was about my suggested move of 34. Rc2 in the R1f2 line.

Nov-30-06

Domdaniel: <Ohio> *that* Rc2, of course. My mistake.

My plan was/is to split the post-Qg5 moves off gradually. <jep> is still finding wins after 31.R1f2, but even if he persuades Thor et al I don't think the vote can be reversed now. I thought he might go for 31...Rc2 later, but now doesn't seem like the time to suggest it.

So, yes, 31...Rc2 is your baby, along with other odds and ends. There *is* a logic to doing it this way, but there are also many transpositions between lines.

btw, it's pretty certain now that I'll be very busy in RL for most of next week - the price of doing very little work this week, plus it's when advance stuff for Christmas week gets required. Can't see how I'll be able to manage stuff here at all, anytime between Mon-Thurs/Fri. Can you take the helm then?

back in the present tense--
Current forums - I'll make another full announcement now, making it clear that you're covering 31...Rc2 [plus others]; then tomorrow we can try to reassign those 'others'... OK?

OhioChessFan: Give me a day's notice for coordinating and it will be fine.

Domdaniel: <Ohio> Will do, thanks. I'm definitely OK until Monday midday next. Then I'm gone until Thursday or Friday... I'll be able to check in occasionally, but will have zero time for organizing etc.

Or disorganizing, or whatever it is I currently do...

Amended notice for main page is ready.
G'night.

Dec-01-06  jepflast: <Dom>

After 31. Qg5 wins the vote, I'll be continuing my analysis of some of the endings I've been studying that still may occur. One I have officially ruled a draw, but 31. Qg5 can lead to others that are similar and are probably wins.

We may still be able to use my forum for discussion of a separate line as well.. let me know if it's needed.

Domdaniel: <jepflast> Thanks - I've been saving one of the post-Qg5 lines for you, but I didn't want to interrupt while you were still at work on R1f2. And it's good to hear those endings are being worked on.

I find it ironic that R1f2 never got going in the ballot, after coming so close on the previous move. It would certainly have been played on move 30 if all the fxg6 voters had known that Qg5 would follow.

It probably doesn't matter - as you've said, the endings are broadly similar.

Carry on as you propose for now. I'll probably request your forum for one of the Qg5 lines, but I have to catch up on overall analysis first.

Domdaniel: <Forumpeople> 31.Qg5 has just been played. I suggest the 3 current forums just carry on for now... <Ohio> is hosting 31...Rc2, plus everything apart from 31...Re2/...Re4/...Re6.

We could separate out some of those 'other' moves like 31...Ra8. Or we could have a forum for non-rook moves. Or a forum strictly for the 'rooks of death' line, 31.Qg5 Rc2 32.Rf7 Re2, where black's rook moves can come in either order?

Any ideas? Volunteers? etc.

Dec-01-06  izimbra: What is thought to be black's best defense in the current position? Frankly, everything I've looked at for black collapses in a pile of pooh.

Domdaniel: <izimbra> try 31...Re6 on <themadhair>'s forum - as a defensive try it looks to have possibilities.
Dec-01-06  themadhair: < try 31...Re6 on <themadhair>'s forum - as a defensive try it looks to have possibilities.> Not according to my analysis. Must have missed something.
