| Dec-01-06 | | themadhair: I think that when <RV> says it is the best drawing shot he means relative to the alternatives - which are all not good for black. If the world fail to win from here it will have to be due to a mistake. Pride before a fall and all that though... |
|
| Dec-01-06 | | izimbra: Yeah, black's got a weak pawn on a6 and two weak pawns on the d-file...the premise behind e6, that he's going to save the day by creating another weak pawn on the kingside just to drive the queen back is pretty dubious. I agree with the themadhair that white looks good in Re6 when he plays R1f2 sooner than Rybka suggests, and I found the same thing in the Rc2 or transposing Re2 lines. |
|
Dec-01-06
 | | Domdaniel: <izimbra> & <madhair> Yeah, I just had a look at your lines. It might not be stone-cold 100% exhaustive yet, but it's looking good. I will be *very* interested to see what GMAN plays here - it should tell us a lot about his attitude. |
|
| Dec-01-06 | | TheSlid: <Domdaniel> Never read any <Pynchon> - my ignorance, of course. As a literary man, would you say that his style was that which Anthony Burgess was imitating in his last work "Any Old Iron"?
Burgess (nee William Wilson) is a favourite of mine, in the sense that I have read at least 3 of his books and an autobiography |
|
Dec-01-06
 | | Domdaniel: <Slid> I've read at least 10 Burgess books, and was quite a fan - even met the old curmudgeon once, briefly. But I haven't read 'Any Old Iron'. I will now, though. I know he broadly approved of Pynchon - at least compared to most other practitioners of the so-called art. But he also thought some of TP's excesses were, well, excessive. And he was well able to lampoon anyone. Little Wilson and Big God - is that the autobiography you read? |
|
Dec-01-06
 | | Domdaniel: <TheSlid> As for Pynchon - something in his new book, Against the Day, sent me back to his very first novel, V, published in 1963. Utterly extraordinary. And a great place to start. |
|
| Dec-02-06 | | TheSlid: <Little Wilson and Big God> Yes it was. I may even still own it, though I married a woman whose mother threw books out, as a matter of principle, because they made a mess. I might make a point of requesting <V> by Pynchom from the in-laws for Christmas, just to make a point she will never get. Strangely, I have always got on very well with said mother-in-law. Partly the Virgo connection and also because we both understand how difficult her elder daughter can be at times. (Hee, hee!). |
|
| Dec-02-06 | | TheSlid: <Domdaniel> The story I liked best from <LW&BG> was the line he overheard in a Manchester shop <...he's as queer as a Clockwork Orange, that one...> |
|
Dec-02-06
 | | Domdaniel: <TheSlid> Yes indeed - the strange notion that books constitute 'mess' when other stuff - family photos, nick-nacks, bits of china and such - is exempt. I've also struggled with such bizarre belief systems. |

| Dec-03-06 | | twinlark: G'day boss...thought I'd spend the hour or so b4 I gad off to my next destination for a few days on K-DF. Deary me, I think the hour of the machine has definitely arrived. World Game looks good...
cya later. |

 | | Open Defence: <G'day boss...thought I'd spend the hour or so b4 I gad off > geez i read that as thought I'd spend the hour or so <on b4> .. was wondering since when was b4 a candidate move ? |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | Domdaniel: <twinlurk> Didya hear Fred Friedel today on audio with Seirawan during Kramnik-Fritz? Ve-ry innaresting. Processor power uber alles... Hang in there. Next problem - RL stuff means I must hand over to Ohio tomorrow - which will of course be fine. And then Thorsson goes walkabout from Thurs, I think... I can see how previous Worlds have been gradually worn down and induced to blunder. Especially with a 5th column within voting for various entertaining forms of suicide, u.s.w. Still. Neither Dom Perignon nor Scheissvogel is actually <responsible> for any of this. We could just vanish forever. Pfft. |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | Open Defence: yeah.. GMAN will probably play the line which takes the most moves.... |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | Domdaniel: NOTICE to all FORUM persons.
<twinlark> remains in absentia, and real-life stuff means I have no chance of doing this properly in the week ahead. Therefore, from Monday to Thurs/Fri, <Ohio Chess Fan> will coordinate the forums and post announcements on the main page. After Monday, check with him for details. Thanks. |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | Domdaniel: After GMAN's 31...Re4, several moves seem possible, eg: 32.Bd8
32.Rf7
32.b4
32.b3
32.h4
32.R1f2
etc.
It may be that Arno has deliberately picked a line where we have multiple choices... Any comments? Anybody volunteer to host a particular move/line? |

Dec-03-06
 | | OhioChessFan: Okay, DD, I guess I shouldn't get a forum this time. Round up the usual suspects. |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | Domdaniel: some suggestions:
32.Bd8 -- madhair
32.Rf7 -- jepflast
32.h4 -- mack
<Ohio> - yeah, certainly it would be better not to take on any of the major moves - one of the lesser critters could be an option, if you like. <stevens> forum is also available for a line (in the passive sense). Anyone wanting to accept, refuse, or whatever these ideas, please shout. |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | OhioChessFan: All right. I have my profile set up, pending move assignments. I think maybe b3 and b4 could be worth a look, probably on one forum. While I don't expect either to be played, the ideas will remain for a long time. |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | Domdaniel: Now 32.Bc5 is also moving into contention... volunteers needed. |
|
| Dec-03-06 | | Artar1: Sure, I'll do it. Let me set up the forum, and then I will reset my processor to look at 32.Bc5. |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | Domdaniel: <Artar1> Great, thanks. You know the drill by now. And it doesn't stop you personally favoring another move, as long as 32.Bc5 gets a fair examination. Welcome aboard. |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | OhioChessFan: Took me a while to figure out how to link to the user names with a space, but all is well at 16 bells. |
|
| Dec-03-06 | | Artar1: I have set up the forum and will begin work on the line. Thanks |
|
Dec-03-06
 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> Excellent. As you can see, <Artar1> is now on board as well - though I'm still waiting for confirmation from the others. I keep a Word document handy with relevant URLs and links, plus the current version of the forum announcement. I'd never really thought about names with spaces - they seem to have something like <%20> in the middle instead of the space. I'll still have some time to spare tomorrow morning (Euro time) so I can check that tonight's forums are OK before handing over to you later in the day... Did you see the model tree-diagram on twinlark's forum? It's an idealized plan structure - but right now, with so many transpositions, it would take forever to fill in the blanks. If we enter a forcing line it might be useful. And remember Thorsson goes away on Thursday for a few days, so wring all his knowledge out of his first... |
