Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <Ohio> I'll be back sometime Friday. If Friday turns out to be a busy forum-organizing day like today, I'll be back in time for it. I'll be able to look in during the week, but never for too long at a time. Not sure about twinlark's return date - it should be somewhere in his forum, though. The 'tree' structure is there too. (PS - did you see the new addition in the quotes part of my profile - a kind of homage to Columbus, Ohio --?)
Dec-03-06  isemeria: <...model tree-diagram on twinlark's forum?>

I guess this refers to my "analysis report" I sketched about a month ago. The purpose is the have the results of an analysis workshop collected to an easily understandable format. This is similar to what <RV> has, but while he only presents the current mainline, this report could have several variations, and also refutations and explanations. In short, up-to-date information about the work in progress. My idea was that with this kind of reports it would be easier to compare different candidate moves.

The downside is that maintaining this kind report is a demanding task, regarding both time and skill. And I'm a bit afraid that it could be excessive bureacracy, when people should concentrate on analysis.

Off to bed now. Unfortunately I'm away for couple of days now. It seems that Bd8/Bc5 race may become interesting.

Domdaniel: <isemeria> That's the one. As you say, there's a lot of work involved. It might be possible to use the idea in a semi-forcing line with few sidelines and transpositions... if we ever reach one.
Dec-03-06  themadhair: I'll take Bd8 then. Let me know when a h4 forum is set up so I do an analysis dump.

Domdaniel: <madhair> Thanks. Just dump the h4 material on <mack> - I haven't heard from him yet tonight, but it should be OK. Now that we have the main pieces in place I'll make a forum announcement.

Domdaniel: OK, here's the plan. Anyone wants to opt out, tell me or <Ohio>.

32.Bd8 -- themadhair
32.Bc5 -- Artar1
32.h4 -- mack
32.R2f1 and 32.Rf7 -- jepflast
32.b3 and 32.b4 -- stevens

thanks, all.

Dec-03-06  monad: <Dom>Hiya,

I could be daring and become a temporary forager and take on 32.R1f2, either to relieve the load of jepflast or in addition. So please mention that in your list of fora, as well as the website.

Domdaniel: <monad> You're on... I'll relieve jepflast of 32.R1f2 and list you instead. Will post the key pieces of info again shortly. Thanks.
Dec-04-06  jepflast: <Dom> I just checked the forum. Sorry I've been absent today. I will set up my forum for Rf7.

But I think h4 is my favorite move here and I'll be spending time on several other choices.

Dec-06-06  monad: Hiya,

I do find myself wondering whether or not I ought to curtail my obscure digressions as well as make my sentences shorter ;-)

Almost as English as the inane question: "Is anybody sitting here?", pointing to an empty chair. Probably any sentiment more directly opposed to German towels on beach loungers in the Med, would be impossible to find.

Some of the curly thoughts going through my mind after coming across some of the postings you have been involved in all over this slow site. See what you made me do?

Tell me true: Did Prescot actually make that reference to , who was it, Webster? A Revenge play if I recall right.

My rescue attempt isn't working all that well. Time will tell.

Anyways, Ohio is doing such a great job, you might as well extend your vacation; calling it work, are you? He seems to have a talent for making people commit. Even I am a half-way, part-time, short-lived, (no hyphen) forager now. Of sorts. Joco-seriously.

BTW, does the word 'jocorous' turn up anywhere in the Emerald Isle, other than in Chamber's Dictionary? Please tell me it does. Quite important at the minute.

Domdaniel: <monad> in reverse - no, in random - order:

'jocorous': I'm afraid I have no idea. I have neither a good dictionary nor a universal guide to EmeraldIslish (Smaragdean?) to hand just now. Offhand, I'd say it was a portmanteau of 'jocose' and 'decorous/rancorous' - but you don't much care for 'offhand', do you? Now that I'm interested, though, further data may follow.

Prescott: close, but the line 'Why this is Hell, nor am I out of it' comes from Marlowe's Doctor Faustus - Mephistopheles responds thus to the question 'how'd you get out of hell, then, o damned one?', more or less. Prescott has never used the line, that I know of - but (a) R. Samuel was his tutor in Ruskin college, and (b) his constituency is in Hull - which is sufficient linkage for me.

Yes, Ohio has the knack of encouraging contributions from people who steadfastly ignore my verbose attempts at communication. I wonder why.

'Is anybody sitting here' is certainly an Anglicism, but it is also normal in said Emerald Isle. Perhaps an imported mannerism? But there's also a peculiar local version - using what I call the Provisional Tense - viz, 'Would anyone be sitting here?' - which seems to insure the speaker against past, present and future occupants, as well as those from regions invisible and sundry dimensions near, but not necessarily parallel to, the one we inhabit.

As you can see for yourself, I've been reading Pynchon again.

Ta-ra.

Domdaniel: The OED - heavyweight version, 2 vols plus magnifying glass - has jocant, jocantry, jocatory, joco, jocond, jocose, jocosely, jocoserious, jocoseriosity, jocosity, jocular, jocularity, joculary, joculator, joculatory, joculatorily, jocund, jocundary, jocundity, & jocundry.

All, via one route or another, seem to go back to Latin 'jocus', a joke.

But no sign of jocorous. Chambers tends to be better at these things, although its greatest value is obscure Scottish words like 'taghairm'.

As Robbie Dylan almost sang:

She was at a taghairm when we first met
Soon to be myomantic
I helped her out of her bullock's hide
But I got a little bit too frantic.

Dec-07-06  monad: <Dom> Big grin.
At least sanity is restored: It wasn't our second in command that came up with anything remotely interesting after all. Phew. I thought the Universe had gone haywire.

Chambers Dict. 1957 is the only one that seems to carry the word 'jocorous' in print. I ahve ploughed through every possible one I could lay my hands on, including the zillion volume of the QD, too heavy to be lifted off the shelves by one person alone. I had to enlist help for the volume in question.

I would love to own the DVD version, or even a subscription on line, but both are prohibitively expensive.

Dec-07-06  monad: Actually I was hoping to find that you had heard somebody say it. Maybe you could start the trend?

Dec-07-06  mack: <She was at a taghairm when we first met Soon to be myomantic

But I got a little bit too frantic.>

Gosh, seems such a long time ago now doesn't it?

Domdaniel: <mack> Indeed it does. The lyric may even have altered slightly, and in a jocorous fashion, but that always happens with these Dylanisms.

Domdaniel: <monad> There, I've begun. Don't think I'd ever get it past the Times spellcheckers, though. Every time I write 'irruption' (rather a nice word, I think) they inevitably change it to 'eruption'.

One day Mount Rupert will irrupt and they'll learn the difference.

Domdaniel: <monad> You might be onto something. There's an Irish Gaelic word 'deoch', meaning 'drink', pronounced something like 'joke'. The word jocorous could easily have been coined in the 1940s/50s by a writer like Flann O'Brien/Myles na Gopaleen. He liked trilingual puns between Irish, English and Latin.

And jocorous has echoes of the phrase 'deoch an doras', literally 'a drink at the door', meaning 'one for the road'. There's something similar in Scots Gaelic, too...

Chambers 1957, you say? I'm on the trail...

Domdaniel: <monad> The quest continues. I've tried a dictionary of Dublin slang, with no success. Nor anything in the Hiberno-English website run by Prof Terry Dolan of University College Dublin - though if anyone alive knows the answer, it's Terry. Maybe I should email him.

Perhaps it's a Joycean pun. I'll just slog through Finnegans Wake, shall I?

There's always googling [slight retch]. My first attempt threw up one of those random lists of words - possibly aimed at people who want domain names and arrived very late at the game. But observe the said words:

unionhall bubka testacy cardmember jocorous dermatophytosis unnymphlike airworthiness scaury macklike pectolite prickers ...

Unionhall is a village in West Cork.
Macklike is, well, macklike.
Dermatophytosis must be what guys named Dermot suffer from. Scaury, isn't it?

Oh, and 'cardmember' evokes the Viv Stanshall song that goes...

Can you remember
The time that my member
-ship card of the union
Was long overdue....?

Domdaniel: <monad> ... continuing this line of thought ... 'deoch' means drink, while the various joco- words have something to do with humour. There is a precedent for words linking the two topics. James Mason, for instance, was said to have played many chess games 'in an hilarious condition'.

Where was Mason born? Kilkenny, Ireland, is where. The plot thickens by a micro-inspissation or two.

Dec-08-06  monad: <Dom>

I reckon it is simply the slurred version of 'jocoserious', which proved too much for somebody after their final drink 'at the door'. Without the hyphen to pause for breath, it could have been hard to achieve the whole word.

Surprising it made any dictionary at all, particularly if you see that the modern versions of Chambers don't carry it either. Possibly the word editor of the day was still jocorously happy when doing his day job the following morning.

Such a lot between the lines now and then ;-)
