   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: BTW ... due to computer glitches I'm unable to send or receive emails at the moment. So apologies to anyone here who might have tried to contact me by EMU recently.

I hope to rectify this soon. I'd better, or I won't be able to work (yes, I'm expected to 'work' at this time of year) ... or even claim my Chessy T-shirt from CG.

If all else fails, I'll grab a few minutes on somebody else's machine to catch up.

Incidentally, my respect for CG has increased even further. This crappy old computer refuses to do all kinds of things -- yet this site works perfectly. They must have had idiots like me in mind when they built it ...

Happy Christmas to my friends, and forgiveness to my enemies, whoever they are. Christ probably put that more succinctly. But, hey, isn't it the thought that counts?

*My* thoughts count all the time ... the digits of pi, the ... ouch!

OhioChessFan: Warn't it on your forum someone posted the link to the woman chanting the digits of pi? I am in the Christmas pi spirit and was looking for it as a nice background music as I rap presents. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Still seems to work, too. Luckily, I'm on an old computer where I had it bookmarked. Shall we begin, sir?

Dec-25-09  minasina: I don't know if someone has answered:

<I don't know the Finnish for 'fish'. Do you?>

Anyway, 'fish' in Finnish is 'kala'.

Domdaniel: <minasina> Thank you. 'Kala' is the first word of Finnish that I've learned, apart from a few in Kaurismaki films.

Hmm. Does 'kala mari' mean 'fish of the sea'?

Dec-26-09  Ziggurat: No, but nice try. Sea is "meri", and you have to flip the words around: "merikala"

Domdaniel: <Jess> Thanks. I rather enjoyed the Cantina spin, especially as I haven't been able to play Youchoob for days - old comp, too lo-res.

Andrew Sweeny seems to be a tad Irish for a French Canadian. Anyhow, he can come and roost in my tree anytime. The rains *will* come - most days.

Innaresting, this Canadian mariachi music, just ignoring the lump of nordamerica in between. As in Gore Vidal's Duluth - which I read on Christmas day - where Mexican migrants, just a few miles from Tijuana, freeze to death in the icy alleyways of cold old Duluth.

I'm a cold northern type by inclination, but Mexica has its attractions, like cheap drugs and human sacrifice.

Domdaniel: *Oh* dear. Maybe it was an ironic meta-LOL? Do they count?

Anyhow, Lolling in the Kib Cafe is like sneezing in a hospital -- you don't want to encourage it, but it happens anyway.

Good grief; but I will not let it stop me from wishing you, Dom, a "handy" New Year.

And to the visitors as well, of C'Horus.
