 | | Domdaniel: <Deffi> That was my first post on a new computer. I got sick of the other ones crashing. Now I'd better go install Fritz or something, so I can keep up the pretence of knowing something about chess. |
|
Dec-29-09
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Happy 2010. Or 'ten past eight' as we call it here ... |
|
| Dec-29-09 | | achieve: Same to you, <Dom>, and admittedly I have been crabby lately following my erm... "research". I confessed at her maj's, not sure if you read it.
On many an occasion I was tempted to draw on your vast knowledge on numbers, symbols and its various meanings. Not just "sums".
heh
Happy New Year, Gerry. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Chessgames.com must have gotten someone to blow the whistle on the new pic. |
|
Dec-29-09
 | | Domdaniel: Or *wet* the whistle ... |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | jessicafischerqueen: GAY = OK!
<Dom> you realize that "Canadien" is the French spelling so maybe he confused you with a player from the Montreal Canadiens hockey club. |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: <jess> Very plausible ... ice makes me fall down, usually when it's floating in a glass of whatever I happen to be wetting my whistle with. Ich bin ein gay canadien. |

Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: <song>
I wish I'd gone to Iceland
I would give ten thousand crowns
To play with Bobby Fischer
And observe his ups and downs
And maybe Thomas Pynchon
Would be there by the sea
To talk of Vineland County
And its people hard and free
Thomas Pynchon, Bobby Fischer and me |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | tpstar: Yet Fischer was insane
A crazy loner coot
The Jews scrambled his brain
Then stole his garage loot
More likely Stephen King
Would watch the board transfixed
And even if you won
They'd say your game was fixed
Stephen King, Bobby Fischer, and not me |
|
| Dec-30-09 | | technical draw: This is a weird forum. |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: This is an ambiguous statement. |
|
| Dec-30-09 | | hms123: "This" is an ambiguous statement. |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: <tpstar> 'fixed' and 'transfixed'? Call that a rhyme? And maybe William Caxton
Would arrive when it got late
And spout some ancient verses
That no-one could translate
William Caxton, Stephen King, not tpstar, Bobby Fischer, Thomas Pynchon and me ... |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: "This" is a weird forum. |
|
| Dec-30-09 | | Red October: Oh what we'd give to see a well built kilted Mountie... |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: We want to play 'Mounties' again, do we? Ohh, Kay. |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: <kilt usage #1>
"It's the *kilt*, doctor, the never-ending kilt. It just never leaves me ..." [breaks down, sobbing manly sobs of kilt] |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: <kilt usage #2>
"Tis me nerves, doctor - they has me kilt..."
[pretends to shudder while doctor scribbles a prescription for tranquilizers ... antipsychotics ... whatever ...] |
|
Dec-30-09
 | | Domdaniel: <A doctor> enters stage left, singing... "If the patient's cold, you keep 'em warm
If the patient's hot, you cool 'em
Remember you must do no harm
And they pay you well to fool 'em." |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: The Mounties traditional dress is actually kiltless, albeit still pretty funny to look at: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e... However, if you still have your heart set on butch men in kilts go no farther than <Kingston, Ontario's Own Princess Pats Light Infantry and Swanning About Regiment>: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfzS... |

| Dec-31-09 | | malthrope: <Dom> - I just wanted to drop bye and wish you a Happy New Year! ;) Also to thank you once again for allowing me the use of your quote <"Combinations and chemistry are your only men."> which graced my prologue all year long. Except when I went into holiday mode to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. :) You're far too kind, <"Domdaniel: Uh, what are those categories again? Can I scroll back while I pretend to think? Cool. [...] *Best Historian*
<Malthrope> + <Brankat>, who were there when it happened."> recently posted in <WannaBe>'s chessforum for the annual Caissar awards. Very much appreciated and I'm sure <Brankat> will appreciate it too! :)) Shortly I'll review all the nominees thus far and see what I can add before the official voting starts. ;) One last, it appears that destiny has taken a left turn at the crossroads... There is a new Player's page and bio in town: Alan Benson <"Currently, he is known as malthrope on the internet."> Guessing that I'll be very busy soon setting up a large batch of my best and worst games for download. ~lol~ :P Thanks again <Dom> :^) All the Best, - Mal |

 | | Domdaniel: <Mal> Thank *you*. It was nice to see my <combinations + chemistry> line develop a life of its own. I'd originally intended it as a joke for <jess>, as a fellow fan of Flann O'Brien's original "A pint of plain is your only man". I look forward to seeing your games on the database. I've only uploaded 4 of mine so far -- three from the 1970s and one recent effort. I have somehow lost the scores of most of my games that could be called good, including my draw with Miles. But I'll try to find some more of the less worse ones. Or examples of idiocy like my 15-move loss to Baburin. It's good to see more games from CG regulars in the database. They had a guideline saying that least one player should be rated over 2200, but there is some wriggle room if the game quality is good enough. I have a few 2000-vs-1950 games that I think are good, even though both players are well below the 2200 threshold. And other 'big' databases are full of *real* rubbish -- overrated Ruritarians taking turns to drop pieces. No insult intended to the fine people of Ruritania. Their heroic Grandmasters taught the world how chess should be played. Happy new year, Mal. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Some real Scottish and Irish culture> Forget kilts. Each January, the National Gallery of Scotland and the National Gallery of Ireland hold exhibitions of watercolour paintings by JMW Turner. Both galleries got a bequest of Turners in 1900, from a collector named Henry Vaughan. He stipulated that they should only be shown in January, when the light was weak and less likely to cause damage. The galleries have stayed with this tradition, even though they now use controlled electric light. Thanks to all this, these amazing paintings are still in pristine condition. If you find yourself in Dublin or Edinburgh this month, see for yourself. Turner might have been an Englishman, but he is a citizen of the Republic of Light. His last words, before his last journey there in 1851, were "The sun is God". The year's midnight is past, up here on the Celtic fringe of the northern hemisphere. This is Turner time. Think of Morphy with a paintbrush and you'll get the general idea. |

| Dec-31-09 | | mack: Happy new year, chums. Sorry I've been such a non-entity these past (10*10)+(11*11*)+(12*12) days. It'll all change next year, promise. For now, though, I must go drink my chronic acid reflux into the ground. See you when you're older! |

 | | Domdaniel: n(n+1)(2n+1)/6 - m(m+1)(2m+1)/6 ; where n = 12 and m = 9;
= 650 - 285
= 365
It works (I took the long way round for theoretical reasons - don't we all?)... I'm going back to watching A Zed and Two Noughts.
I thought it a suitable film for the end of the Noughties, as seen through new spectacle lenses. Heppy 2010, everyone. |
