   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> I have noticed two things about you. First, you have an ironic, self-deprecating way of presenting yourself. Which is delightful. But I think you deserve some bragging rights for the hard work you put into the <Nickel> game and the fantastic result. As <Yeshua> counseled, <"Don't hide your light under a bushel."> Do they have "bushels" in the UK?

Second, I noticed that you take great care to answer and comment on virtually every single post that comes in here. This makes the kibbutzers in this forum feel very warm and fuzzy.

So cheers to you, and looking forward to having a peek at <Entropanto>.

Your fan, Jess

PS Shades of <John Synge>. The horrifying news of the deaths of Irish fishermen made it on to the front page of our newspaper here in British Columbia. Condolences to the Irish and all other Brythons, Albionese, and compadres. We Canadians still care a great deal about the UK.

Jan-13-07  twinlark: G'day Dom, I just realised you posted your 4000th at my place...never have so few said so much to so many in such a short time. Considering you started here in August and didn't really start posting till September, that's one heroic effort.

You must be thirsty from all that talk.

If you're still up and about in your post twilight Irish milieu, how'd you like a cold Beer ?

jessicafischerqueen: <twinlark> Ok I'm still obsessed with your doggy's goggles. I dreamt about them last night after the draws put me to sleep.

Jan-13-07  twinlark:

<Jess> Well, I guess that answers Peter Sarstedt's question...

jessicafischerqueen: <twinlark> What is <Peter Sarstedt's> question? Tell tell tell please.

Also, the two games in the <Beer> forum. Did a vat of beer actually play chess? My Cat can play chess, but I don't play black against him anymore because he always opens d4.

Cheers.

Domdaniel: Gott in Schwarzkommando, I haven't hit 4000, have I? I thought *you* might have, <tl>, but I'd fooled myself into thinking I'd decelerated. Some deceleration.

Or is that what happens when the celery won't stay down?

<Jess> Thank you. Some of those fisherman set out about 20 miles from here, from a village I know well, and I used to live in another fishing village further along the coast and still have friends there. Small communities - though more cosmopolitan that people might think, with all those seagoing influences. It's been rough for them.

As for bushels, it's probably either this mode or total OTT gonzo Teutonic Filmdirektor Megalomania -- "We move through a complex pattern of darkness and light and in all humility I am one of very few who can comprehend the totality of it all...", as Der Springer sez. Maybe I'm just a naturally self-deprecating megalomaniac...

And I may have read a few books and seen some films, but you're astonishing. I've had about 20 years extra to plod through it all.

Uh, technically 'we' here left the UK around 1922, though I'm not one to quibble. I can't wait for Scotland and Wales to cut loose, so people will have to use an acronym for Former United Kingdom. Wonder if they'll get that one past the CG censor.

Sarstedt? "Where do you go to my lovely, when you're asleep in your bed...?"

I'm not going to post anything for the next 36 hours, maybe 48. Which is a long absence for me. It's nothing startling: I'll just be in transit to the local metropolis and back...

See you all anon, anon.

Jan-14-07  twinlark: <Jess> What DD said about Peter S: that song was a huge hit in the early 70s, and is pretty much his signature song.

I'm shocked at your cat. You'd think that it'd be more adventurous...have you tried feeding it raw steak? I hear that some felines that have been on canned food for too long have been know to resort to the KID reversed.

There's no end to the degeneracy of modern domestic urbanised animals. You slave away, working your fingers to the bone, keeping them in catnip and fresh litter, plasma TVs and Tom & Jerry reruns, and how do they repay you? With a Queen's Pawn opening...

I got rid of my goldfish because they were constantly playing the Petroff. I gave them to some Russian, Vlad someone or other, and got a budgerigar instead.

My budgie has a whimsical sense humour and style, generally tests me out with 1.f4. Never a dull moment. I put this flight of fancy down to the organically grown seeds and the run of my chess library.

Now if only the Cardinal Tetras would play something beside the Muzio and Latvian gambits...

jessicafischerqueen: <Twinlark> LMAO dang you guys are funny.

Who could deny that a budgie is a <Pircy> creature? This might explain his penchant for f4.

As to goldfish favoring the <Petrov> and your tropical fish's addiction to <gambits>, I'm at a loss...

True though-- the pet keeps the owner, rather than the other way round. I'm a slave to my Tabby, and he's been known to take a leak in my shoes on the sly after a tough beat.

I think that's why he won't allow me to play my favorite- the Accelertated Dragon.

I hope you'll be around again tonight?
I'm not sure if I'm inclined or have the energy to watch a bunch of draws again.

Cheers, smiles, and giggles,

Jess

Open Defence: my spaniel hates chess... when ever i set the board up she bangs it with her paw... maybe i should get a budgie...
Jan-14-07  twinlark:

Hi Deffi! Maybe she's wants to play Go instead?

jessicafischerqueen: "God keep me from ever completing anything."

<Herman Melville>, 1850 (while composing <Moby Dick>)

Is this a piece of literary profundity, or an official endorsement of the idea that one's literary life is best lived perpetually inside of a good Pub?

We need answers...

Jan-14-07
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: <Open Defence> perhaps it's best if your <spaniel> never learns to move the pieces... if he/she did, he/she might play nothing but the <Ruy Lopez>?

Could get irritating after awhile...

Cheers, Jess

jessicafischerqueen: Ok here's another <Melville> "tit bit":

"Outside the medieval Belgian city of Ghent, there is a brothel with the intriguing name, <Moby Dick Fun Pub>."

If my "literary career" doesn't pan out, do you think I should apply for work there? Open to suggestions...

wheeeeeee

Jan-14-07  twinlark: Ruy Lopez = The Spaniel Game?

jessicafischerqueen: LOL <twinlark> you got it easily...
Jan-14-07

  jessicafischerqueen: Ok last "tit bit."

<Andrew Delbanco> wrote this about <Melville>:

"With his ambulatory style--always digressive, never consecutive--he was happier to wander than to go straight. Restlessly experimental, he was by turns playful, ironic, somber, and uproariously funny, sometimes dropping into bawdy comedy, sometimes soaring into soliloquies worthy of <King Lear>."

Now, who does this description remind us of?

Hint: his initials are <D> <D>.

Jan-14-07  myschkin: Weisst du wo <monad> ist? Danke im voraus!
Jan-15-07  Eyal: <Now, who does this description remind us of?

Hint: his initials are <D> <D>.> I have no idea, but maybe the host of this forum would know the answer to that.

Btw, best Melvillean tit bit of all:

"I would prefer not to".

Jan-15-07  Nibiru: Say Dom, isn't the (or a) anagram of Arno Nickel 'No Kan Relic'?

jessicafischerqueen: LOL <eyal> Bartleby the Scrivener!!

Best Short Story in Christendom!!!

The kind manager actually moves his offices across the street rather than fire Bartlelby!!

Loves it.

jessicafischerqueen: <Wilson> lol no it's <Open Defence's> dog who speaks. My Tabby speaks, but only in Dutch. So <Niels> and <dak> have to translate for me...

jessicafischerqueen: LOL <tabbyanus> No worries, sir, my Tabby is named <McGreggor> (my Dad's gene pool is from the Hamilton clan in <Scotchland>, which is why my favorite opening is the <Scotch>.

jessicafischerqueen: <Wilson> do you mean that <twinlark> is my doggy? Not so, LOL. It's the doggy's goggles I'd like to have. I think <twinlark> is a talking bird, no?
