 | | Domdaniel: <More Roots> Anyone know why Al-Qaida hasn't much of a presence in Papua New Guinea? Apart from the shortage of Muslims, obviously ... they're over in West Papua/ Irian Jaya, the Indonesian-occupied bit of the island. It's because Al-Qaida means 'the base' or 'the root' or 'the fundament'. Rooting with fundaments would cause problems in English, as the local version has an Aussie accent. Worse still, in PNG Pidgin the word for 'base' is 'ars'. A totally normal word that just happens to have been borrowed from the English 'arse'. But the roots of a tree, say, are 'ars bilong tri'. And my guess is that Al-Qaida would be 'ars bilong Allah'. That could be a problem.
At least we only have to contend with Laffmeisters and their ars-bilong-GM antics. BTW, the Revolution/riots in Greece are in Syntagma Square in Athens. If CG ever has a revolution I want to see marches in Notyetagma Square ... |

| Feb-25-12 | | hms123: <Dom> Thanks for the explanation. I did a little sleuthing of my own and only found mild (BMS) comments of <OSOA>. I still remember when <Woody> was reprimanded for a word that he used without having a clue that the admins wouldn't like it. <Temporary fugitives> as they say. 1. BMS = By My Standards
2. OSOA = One Sort Or Another |
| Feb-25-12 | | frogbert: hms123, strange that (if?) you think that "woody" was a "real", genuine kibitzer here on cg.com. |
| Feb-25-12 | | hms123: <frogbert>
I am referring to <WoodyWoodPusher>. We used to email back and forth a fair amount. He seemed real enough to me. You apparently know something that I don't--which <woodn't> be the least surprising. Curiously,
Moi |
| Feb-25-12 | | frogbert: hms123, did you keep emailing him after he left cg.com? |
| Feb-25-12 | | hms123: <frogbert> I think I did once or twice a few months later, but got no response. |
| Feb-25-12 | | frogbert: in other words, no communication outside the one year span he was "here", producing 6000+ posts. thanks. :o) |
| Feb-25-12 | | hms123: <frogbert> Now I am really curious. what's the story? |
| Feb-25-12 | | frogbert: sorry, hms123 - i don't know the details. there are people on the site who do, but either they will not tell you, or what they would tell would most likely not be true. based on my impression, you are an honest, truthful person, hms. unfortunately not everyone here is like you. and sorry again for making you curious without being able to provide you any good answers. |

 | | Domdaniel: <frogbt> OK, your lips are sealed. (Do frogs have lips? Do seals have lisps? Not in this man's navy. LISP: now *there* was a language fit for sentient entities. But I digress...) If you can't tell us anything -- and I'm just as real and *almost* as decent as HMS Howard there -- can you maybe direct us to these mysterious other people who know stuff? We could pester them instead. Must admit, I took 'Woody' for a human person too. Not that I ever emailed him. I tend not to email people. I just don't have the personal bandwidth to deal with humemes on an ongoing basis. Now you'll think I'm not 'real', I suppose. |
| Feb-25-12 | | hms123: <frogbert> I appreciate your response. As is often the case, I will have to go on not knowing. As for <Dom> if he is not real, then I am in <real> trouble. BTW, thanks for the compliment. I do what I can.
And <Jess> and <Niels> and some others are as real as they come. |
| Feb-25-12 | | hms123: <Dom> In many ways, you are way more decent than I am. That is not false modesty on my part, but just an honest observation. I have learned a lot from you. thanks--hms |
| Feb-25-12 | | frogbert: <I took 'Woody' for a human person too.> heh. of course there was a human involved. :o)
<We could pester them instead.> no need for pestering anyone. 'frogbert' has had an inherent warning in his profile from day one - not because i'm trying to deceive anyone, but because people are willingly and unwittingly deceiving themselves all the time. "- on the internet, everybody knows i'm a frog"
this is obviously a pun on the original, but intended to hold the meaning that eventually was ascribed to the original, much to the original artist's surprise. |

 | | Domdaniel: It's a frog's life, innit. |
| Feb-25-12 | | frogbert: it certainly is. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> in the near future, I do need your help with a French translation, via email. So please email me sooner rather than later ok? It's just one sentence where <Aljechin> tells a joke in French, and I can't get the idiom right to figure out the joke. My own French was good enough to translate the rest of the passage. This is really important to the <Aljechin> documentary I'm researching, so it's "bidness." We needn't gab if you don't want, but I'd really appreciate your help on this. And it's *your* help I want, due to your familiarity with idiom and also French and other European languages. This is a puzzle and I need a puzzle solver to help. I'd like that person to be you. jessicafischerqueen@yahoo.com |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: I loved <Woody Woodpusher> so much that I actually grieve his absence. If he was a persona of an existing member- whoever it is- then it's that person I love. I don't need to know who or what <Woody> is. I just wish he would come back. <frogbert> in addition, it's been great to read your many posts here in <frog>spawn lately. I'm glad to see you here, it's truly a great forum. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> is real, several years ago he sent me a few weblinks to a few articles he had written. ENTROPANTO I got via EMU. In addition, as I previously cited in a short biography of <dom> which is actually extant in the back pages of this forum, he also wrote an important monograph on the 16th century Swedish theologian <Gerndt Stingbat>. |
| Feb-26-12 | | frogbert: <<Dom> is real> heh. in norwegian i would probably have said that he's a "real kar". ('kar' being pronounced like 'car', except with a norwegian 'r'. :o) |
Feb-26-12
 | | jessicafischerqueen: In Canada we'd call him a "real card."
I suspect the two idioms don't mean the same thing. |
| Feb-26-12 | | hms123: <Jess>
My daughter teaches French. I am sure she or one of her colleagues would be glad to help. Just send me the anecdote and I will forward it on to her. She is leaving for Paris on Saturday. It seems that teaching French has its advantages. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <The only unforgivable sin is to be bone stupid> I thought it was to lack a sense of humor. I might even be on record (I almost put "I might even be on record as having said that" but that struck me as redundant) on this site, but that would take more mouseclicks to confirm. |
Feb-26-12
 | | OhioChessFan: Mouseclicks......miceclick? |
| Feb-26-12 | | frogbert: hms123, i believe what jfq meant to say, in a "subtle" way, was: "i need to tell you something in private". pardon my french. |
