Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: There has now been a LOT more deletion. Some of it harmless stuff, but once I got started...

I'm sure I've missed odds and ends. But the whole point is that there is no longer a great big concatenation of juvenilia. Yes? No?

Enough?

Feb-17-07  mack: Let's face it, this forum was a lot better on the radio.

Nothing here, folks. These aren't the droids you're looking for.

Domdaniel: I also deleted a chess game in which I had mistyped a move, and a joke that one of the CG people subsequently emailed me about -- he found it very funny and had come back to find it. And there it was -- gone.

The irony.

It was the old one about the three English football teams. But we won't mention *that* again.

Chess? Deep crypto? The usual with a dash of extra perspicacityness? I dunno. What'll we do next?

Actually, I think I'll just go to bed. It's been a long century...

... I don't know whether the legendary recluse and cinema genius CHRIS MARKER plays chess ... but if he played The French this is what it would look like.

White's game is in the last throes, as Breyer observed.

Domdaniel: I know, I know, you're all busily scanning thru earlier pages to see what kind of stuff got left in, and if there are any remnants of what's gone. And just exactly WHERE are the boundaries of the sayable, the ones that we so innocently explored in headier times?

I'm not sure I know. I'm not sure ANYONE does. But I have a better insight into the reason for their existence.

And I'm not really that pushed about obscenity, smut and depravity anyway. <Words> are a different matter. In all languages including chess, Volapuk, and Crypto.

Have fun back there. I did, twice.

Is this the <Kantian> "ought"?

Or do I mean unrewarded? Drat [sic] these triple negatives...

<Deffi> I *have* to believe that writing is a victimless crime, how else could I bring myself to hit the button and slay zillions of innocents at a distance?

Hmm. Time for the traditional song... this is one of Vivian Stanshall's... sung by a pair of washed-up cabaret artistes, Teddy Tidy and Nigel Nice, who now make a living cleaning houses...

"We're Nice and Tidy,
Tidy and Nice...
We'll hoover your mats
Or neuter your cats..."

Prof FischerQueen, plus accomplices including <moi>, conducted a short experiment into the limits of the sayable. We found that they existed, kinda like cosmic background radiation.

Hope that clears everything up.

Feb-18-07  YouRang: <Domdaniel><Hope that clears everything up.>

I see - a little bit of 'playing with fire' ;-). One can never know how far one can go until one has gone too far.

I'm a little chagrined to be the "professor of history" who was completely unaware of what happened.

My dismissal from that post is clearly warranted.

Feb-18-07  Zebra: Hi <Domdaniel>, congratulations and welcome back. I'm glad you got things sorted out.
