Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

jessicafischerqueen: <mckmac> what ho man. Do you remember me you Tim and Deffi writing a "team story" several years ago?

The story is still around, but I can't remember whose forum we put it in.

Sep-27-12  hms123: <Jess> I believe that I was part of that story group as well.

jessicafischerqueen: <H> quite right. I bet Boomie remembers the actual story. We were going to publish it in "Field and Stream," as I recall, but there weren't enough extended flyfishing scenes.

Unlike in "A River Runs Through It."

<H> on possibly related bad news, rumors are flying about possible "Matted Elk" bouts.

I can't confirm anything myself, and I've been asked not to comment by my lawyer, <hms123>.

Sep-27-12  crawfb5: Did it start with "In my family, there was no clear line drawn between chess and religion?"

jessicafischerqueen: <Big> yes, it did. Probably. I believe <Boomie> began ranting about being a "Lex Lutheran" at some point.
Sep-28-12  mckmac: < JFQ > and < hms123 > I have a copy of your story and will post it up here. Bizarre, but not in a bad way.
Sep-28-12  waustad: I guess you're gone again, but in any case, welcome back.
Sep-28-12  mckmac: < waustad > Thank you kindly.
Sep-28-12  mckmac: < Domdaniel > Kindly delete this if you consider it to be out-of-place.

It is quite rare that we find a world class player writing a book about an opening that can still be found in his repertoire.Secrets should be kept in small boxes. If you see an opening, go for it. For she who hesitates is lost. And yet she who is lost must yet hesitate. All unintended consequences require contemplation. She meditated on the wreckage of her good intentions. Those same meditations led to a resurgence of intentions that were, of course, less than admirable,Admirable intentions... I knew an Admiral Intentions once... he was certainly less than admirable. However, on the Field of Mars we call our beloved chess board, the only progress that can be made is fueled by less than admirable intentions-- by intentions that are forged in Blood and Iron, forged in the reptile brain that wishes nothing other than the utter destruction of the opponent, than to raze him, burn him and sow him with salt so that nothing can grow there till the end of time.Yet even while enjoying the entrails of a fallen foe, the Komodo dragon may glance up at the warmth of the sun.In the combat arena, through extraordinary valor and skill, there can arise the sense of a higher purpose, a sweet science. The sweet science is all the sweeter for its rule-based violence. Its primitive nature accounts for its popularity."Quite so, Dr. Tarrasch!" interjected the overexcited biology student, who had recently suffered a significant drop in his grade-point average due to a recently acquired, and most unfortunate, fascination with the <English Opening: King's English Variation. Hungarian Attack With 11...kh9>, "But surely you don't propose that the amygdala is some kind of wanton playground suitable for the fancies of young Catholic High School Girl Chess Students in trouble?" Dr. Tarrasch almost imperceptibly lifted his left eyelid, deigning only to remark "Someone get that dirty young man out of this operating theatre."His pince-nez slightly askew, Aron Nimzowitsch nodded his head in approval. But Frank Marshall intervened saying "You'll have to come through me first!"Madonna immediately piped up with "Ladies first! Ladies first!" just before the tiger ate her for lunch. That was, of course, a certain chess-playing tiger whose friends called him Petrosian.Petrosian had been awarded this sobriquet by benevolent teachers who regarded his equanimity in class as a sign that he was a friendly, happy, pliable student-- a "rosy" teacher's "pet," if you will-- hence "Petrosian"-- but the hidden truth was almost too awful to apprehend.Young Petrosian secretly hustled all of his classmates' borscht money during recess in forbidden chess games, in which he would often give his hapless prey Knight odds and then proceed to dismantle their hopes, dreams, and very souls, peppering his relentless play with taunts such as "Your Grandmother's farm has spotty raspberries."But his fear of detection rose to paranoiac levels where school lockers contained KGB agents with binoculars, textbooks hid listening devices, and every opponent was assumed to be a snitch. To insulate himself, the master of defense created the Chess Thieves World, a group of young toughs with bishop tatoos and bad attitudes who patrolled the hallways during games, pummelled snitches, and blitz beat down new members including the ingrate who would eventually clip the Tiger's tail. But then, perhaps a "den of thieves" isn't collective at all, but is merely metaphorical: Or, perhaps it is both.It is neither. It is an art.Bringing order to the chaotic mundane is a worthy goal, but don't let the chaos win.Let the chaos wash over you. < jessicafischerqueen > < Boomie > < hms123 >.

Annie K.: <mckmac> Hello. :) If you like that sort of thing, you can also find an SF-themed round-robin (aka "group story") written by me, <twinlark>, <Switching Quylthulg>, and <Benzol>, starting on page 115 of my forum: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...
Sep-29-12  achieve: Hi <mckmac>! I checked my email but sofar no Boomian analysis yet, and in my opinion, being very frank, I think Lars Boom, if anything, has gone downward, a descension instead of further development, ascension to stardom... Not so at all.... These last 2 years have really been disappointing, and I think it's a mental block, mainly, and following the WC Roadrace in Valkenburg (Gilbert was hot!) national coach Leo van Vliet was critical of Boom, his mental attitude, and of Mollema, and several of the Rabo pampered riders. And of the Rabo management.

Looking forward to hear from you, Matthew! - we could do with some insights from a former cycling stud like yourself. And I'm curious how you are doing; how life's treating you and vice versa. ;)

Sep-30-12  mckmac: < AnnieK > Greetings from Auckland, New Zealand! Thanks for the heads-up.I will go take a look. Cheers, Matt
Oct-01-12  mckmac: < Domdaniel > Well, this won't do at all, where are you all?. < Gerry > I have just spent the evening with the famous Marx Jones..I drank far too much. I asked an Angel to marry me tonight and I don't favour my chances. My dear Father was born in 1925. He is getting a wee bit frail. If I could I would tell him to harden up. But I am his only son.

< Dom > What you have created and navigated here is extraordinary. Jess has been a large part of that too. You are a fool and you know it. Quite simply disgraceful.

Oct-01-12  achieve: <Mac> I think you need to tone down from your latest. Dom may likely be working on the script he wanted for many years, I don't know, but the urge was always there, the talent was, as we know ( whatever talent is precisely), and Dom does not have a familiar, before-laid-out time-line.

I am not a writer, being good like you are obviuously has you look at your peers, but in this case please do not judge <Dom> - he is pacing himself and for this once he might make it work.

In my humble opinion a "temporary" break from CG was a must, and I am quite certain that dom might be persuaded to tell us if we were wrong.

"Time" though will tell, as always, as we both know.

Oct-01-12  mckmac: Nicely put Niels, but seriously, I'm so glad I don't have to speak Dutch with you. I don't want to talk with Dom anyway. I want to listen to you, and Eyal;Bill and Richard and Branko. What ever happened to Plato and what about the brilliant danielpi? Is Benzol still doing the hard yards? Has anyone seen The Slid or Mack?

I have got to go now. I need to buy a good pair of boxing boots. If you want to dance in the Big Boy's and Girls Room you better bring your gear.

Ma is good thanks.

Oct-02-12  achieve: <Mac>-<If you want to dance in the Big Boy's and Girls Room you better bring your gear.> Surely. I have this weekend watched the <Ryder Cup> and bejolly it separated the boys'n girls from the Men, so you may be right to prepare. But how to prepare for something so deeply investigating?? Your bloody kidneys are on the line, or your liver! Well - metaphorically speaking, but in our case literally we may be dangling them. Look - I know where to go, all the way down the rabbit hole, and it is no fun, and not a single person I have met here at CG can really go that far. I've tried a few times, but it is simply too much, too ugly. Last afternoon I had a sleep-over here at my house, and it was all about love, not between humans, but between two little dogs, and having fun, playing games, trying to outthink eachother, and I had the best 48 hours I can remember for a long time, as I was indeed "longing" for this for a long time. I made little filmclips, audio fragments, just went along for the ride, and have since long not felt that thrill.

Wanna talk BIG BOY LEAGUE stuff? Define it, matey, and I may join ya.

It's too precious to just passingly mention and then head for the door, the exit, or even mildly insult the host. You ought to be past and above that. But who am I to judge? Just another fellow from across the big pond, worried like you, and looking.

I'm glad to hear Ma's doing alright, Matthew, take good care. Really good care.

Oct-02-12  achieve: <I drank far too much. I asked an Angel to marry me tonight and I don't favour my chances. My dear Father was born in 1925. He is getting a wee bit frail.> My dad's from 1936 and his present condition may be considered much worse than a "wee bit frail". He's in a home, and his situation is atrocious, but he simply won't die, remembers nothing, and falls in love with the worst looking B'tch you will ever meet, so how's that for a little perspective.

I sometimes drink "far too enough", but never too much, judging from the outside, - I just need to stop worrying for a few hours a day, and play my piano, pour my heart out - and into - a song.

My mom's from '39 by the way, and we are closer than ever, ironically. Because of our pets, and my dad's unfortunate condition, we are driven towards caring for each-other more so than ever before.

Oct-02-12  achieve: One more thing. We both love Oscar Peterson religiously, and recently I discovered from the family archives a tape from a 1978 Adelaide concert, August 29th, severe bootleg, but we live in the youtube age right? - any way, the renditions of "If" (by Bread) and "The More I See You" are so painfully beautiful that it may cause you to decompensate completely, drop all your marbles, pick'n choose, but it does confront and teaches love, beauty, dedication, and care. Not to mention insane amounts of talent and ability, but foremost are Love, care, and respect. Truly having "a great time."

  perfidious: <Domdaniel: ....Be good.>

As the saying is: if you can't be good, be careful!

Oct-02-12  achieve: Or "excellent."

Or kind. Old Sinatra song, "Please Be Kind" is a 1938 song composed by Saul Chaplin with lyrics by Sammy Cahn."

Swing it, beeyaby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAK7...

Oct-02-12  mckmac: Thank you Niels. I came here, especially today, to apologise to you, and redefine what I was attempting to put in my last post to you. When I said " I don't want to talk with Domdaniel ", I should have said " I am not ready, not sure, still trying to find that song which will finally shake his foundations.
Oct-02-12  mckmac: < Achieve > Remember this? Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my wholly undeserved honour, to present to you, again, The Divine Miss Caitlin Smith.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA6l...
Oct-03-12  mckmac: < Achieve > My dear Niels, I am so sorry, I somehow missed your post about your Father. I will be in touch, so we can speak privately, tomorrow. Your friend, Matthew McKinnell.
