   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Oct-06-12  mckmac: ...and we're back at the Smiley Dairy, Station Square. The Smiley Dairy, where the folks are fair and the deals are fine.

In News just to hand, there is growing talk for the return of The Gravy Hour as originally hosted by Miss Jessica Fischer Queen.Stay tuned citizens!

Rogue Weather Man, Minty Moon, is adamant that the wind will be wild on the corner of High and O'Connell St's later this evening. Says Minty, "I'm usually wrong but I was right last time, wasn't I". And on that worrying note, we return to the sounds. You're with Serge and this one is for Sarah too.

Oct-07-12  mckmac: ...and we're back and you're with Serge at the Smiley Dairy. The Smiley Dairy, where your good credit is none of our business.

We'd like to wrap up today's show with a shout-out to Karen Hay. Saw Karen down the ststion yesterday and she was looking bloody gorgeous in black. Even had the cheek to say Hi. That lady is not a minute over 30. And I never understood what she saw in that fish Fagan, but there you go...

This one goes out to Karen and Andrew, pioneers of Kiwi music.

Oct-07-12  mckmac: ...and we're back again, sitting in for Phil, while he minds the kids. You're shakin' with Serge, and this is Late Night Chat.

Before we open the lines, here's that Muttonbird's medley I promised you last week. You're with Serge, and this is Station Radio, coming to you from the Smiley Dairy, Station Square. The Smiley Dairy, where your wants, are our needs.

Oct-07-12  mckmac: Good Morning Citizens!! You're with Serge who is running late, so here's a little Luther while I find my glasses, my pencil, my damn coffee cup, and my equanimity.

Oct-07-12  mckmac: ...and you're back with Serge. Big Shout-out to Kerry Buchanan this morning, and that one was for him. And so is this.

Oct-07-12  mckmac: ...still shakin' with Serge, here at The Smiley Dairy, Station Square. The Smiley Dairy, where it's never too late for a chat. This is for Chris Watts.

Oct-07-12  mckmac: ..and we're back with Serge. Went with Marx to see The Caitlin Smith Trio last night. Kevin Field as fine as ever. I hadn't seen Caitlin in almost four years but we couldn't stay long. Marx pulled an allnighter on Saturday and all those French Girls and all that Dancing had done him in. Not bad for an coot though.

Expect a review to be published by TVNZ journo Ian Wishart who appears to be adding music to his growing list of journalistic triumphs. Caitlin looked really nice, too.

Oct-07-12  mckmac: ...Good Morning Citizens, and I think we'll tidy up this bracket with a song for Barry Jenkin. Luv ya Barry!!

Oct-07-12  mckmac: ...and we're back with Serge, at the Smiley Dairy. The Smiley Dairy, the blossom of a Dairy, the flower and the hub, right here in Station Square. Sitting in for Betty again on The Afternoon Nap. She'll be back next week with a shining new pair of ngungas. Go Betty!!

Now I've got a moment before our first guest Garrison Keillor joins us by phone, so we'll try to squeeze one in.

To my generous host and mentor, Domdaniel, and to the one, and only, Mack. This is for you guys, and thanks for the memories.

Oct-08-12  mckmac: ...and you're back with Serge. We are beaming this morning from our base at the Smiley Dairy in Station Square. The Smiley Dairy, where Amy is only too happy, and Marco knows his smokes. You're with Station Radio, and you're shakin' with Serge.

We'd like to kick the day off with a slice of Randy Newman. This is for Robbie Sinclair; and for the greatest living, pound for pound, year for year, chessplayer, walking this good earth. This is also for GM Nigel Short.

Oct-08-12  mckmac: ...and you are back with Serge. We are on our break now, and the espresso is steaming. Bit like Randy, if you like.

Oct-08-12  mckmac: ... and we're back with Serge. I'd like now to pay tribute to the only Uncle I have ever known. He has also been my Nurse and tireless supporter. For my partner in crimes imagined, and Legend of New Zealand Music and Painting, Mr I. Rob Sinclair.

...you're stii shakin' with Serge and this is Station Radio. Back in a mo'

Oct-08-12  mckmac: ...and you're back with Serge. Are your knees nice to be near? Mrs Fatulele of Greenwoods Corner says " My knees were holding me up. Every time I sat down, people stood up. But then I invested in a jar of NuNee, and since then, I have been inseparable"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJhh...

Oct-08-12  mckmac: ...thank you, for sitting with Serge. I'm popping out for a bit, and our Phil will be filling in. Let's leave it with Marvin for now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18TL...

Oct-09-12  mckmac: ...Good evening Citizens, you are now sitting with Serge as Wendell is still down The Mustang feeding pokies on your ticket. He's the big fat one down the back. Do not spare him. Brrrr.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKum...

Oct-09-12  mckmac: ...and you're back with Serge and I'm sorry about that. Enough to say that all made it home. We are coming to you from the famous Smiley Dairy in Station Square. The Smiley Dairy, where a nod and a wink...are as good as a smile and a wave. Barry Jenkin loved this guy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OAS...

Oct-09-12  mckmac: ...and of course, there was Elvis Costello. One of John Quigley's all-time best.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9euS...

Oct-09-12  mckmac: ...I only later found Paul Kelly. He was with The Coloured Girl's during Barry's time. To me, he's about so much that is good, living in this part of the world, at this point in time. Goodnight

Oct-09-12  mckmac: Serge call me again. He say me go get Karen Harding. He say she know what is what. He say no worries for friends. He say me not talk to TV hack Ian Sinclair... what is hack? He say me help police but not let Constable Lamont in door. He say me tell Caitlin sorry. My wife like Caitlin very much. She say she sing like bird. Tui maybe.
