 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> The certainty is a front -- deep down, he's a very *uncertain* Floridian. This is why he suspects people of plucking him. |

 | | Annie K.: <G> Just so.
OK, I think I can now confirm for the public, with some degree of certainty, that you actually exist. ;) Sorry about the bad line, I never use this phone except to confirm that I have a line at all, because my internet runs off it. Will figure out how to dial abroad from my iPhone ASAP. Meanwhile, it was good to hear you. :) |

 | | Domdaniel: *Somebody* exists, at least some of the time.
I can't tell whether it's me, though. But he thought it was good to hear you too, complete with spooky alien noises. Probably all that polonium... |

 | | Annie K.: :) Oh, btw, when you get your mail access set up, I sent you a few ebooks I had lying around, by authors I think you mentioned you liked - Banks, Stephenson, and some of that sort. I haven't actually read them myself yet. ;) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: You've resurfaced!
Much like the <Mighty Kraken>. Great to see you again. |
|
| Nov-29-12 | | achieve: Good to see you again, <Dom>, and I thought I'd bug you with actually quite a serious "Math" question, Trigonometry to narrow it down a bit... As you know these days we buy our flatscreen monitors and TVs going by the size of the "diagonal" of a screen, if that's what it is you're going for, say a 16:9 17.3-inch ... Since I'm not really fluent in inches, let's talk centimeters. What I've been looking for this morning, a mathematical simplification, a formula, that tells me, at gunpoint, what if height is B, width is A, diagonal is C, for example, and, depending of course on the A:B ratio, what is the ratio to which the diagonal changes in relation to the width of the screen. BUT I AM RUSTY!!
In a perfect square, we of course know with a little help from Pythagoras, that the diagonal (hypotenuse) of a 1cm by 1cm square is ~1,414 centimeters. But, if we change the ratio, and want to know the exact measurements of 16:9 rectangles, then it could be useful to work on a formula that tells us with Ratio Y, the diagonal is X times the horizontal (A) value/length. Of course one can draw the calculator and simply apply the A^2 + B^2 = C^2 formula - but I am looking for something more refined, telling me that with a screen diagonal of X centimeters, my screen is this wide, given this ratio, say 16:10, or as you know the widescreen releases these days measure 2.35:1, and I simply would like a formula that tells me how the 'C' diagonal changes in length, in relation to 'A', the width of the screen. To complete the picture we may want to calculate the number of pixels needed to fill the area. Oh dear, better dense this. [take two]
I've been playing with this today, following someone's question about a preferred screen diagonal size, "but then precisely how wide will it be?" - and I wanted to be able to provide an immediate, precise, answer. One thing led to another, and of course 'A' is perfectly accounted for in Pythagoras' theorem, but I was looking for a few short-cuts, and a "new" formula derived from A squared plus B squared = C squared. 9 : 16 equals 1 : 1.77777
16 : 18.357559 ('C') equals 1 : 1.147347484
If you work in a store you quickly subtract (given 'C' = 1) 13% (0.1285 to be precise) from the diagonal length to establish the width. Perhaps these calculations can be neatly packaged in a new algebraic formula. In words: to get the width, subtract 1/7th-1/8th from the diagonal length. Formula: given ratio 16:9, A = 0.872C . Anyway, I'll work it out further for *any* 'ratio', but this "not knowing precisely" really started to bug me. [take three]
I want to know "the rate/ function" at which the A:C ratio changes with increasing A:B ratio, C:A being 1.414 if A:B = 1:1, 1.147 for 16:9 ratio, x.xxx for a 2.35:1 ratio, usw. ... My "simplifications" obviously need work, since I'm taking the loooong tour here. |

 | | Domdaniel: <McKMc> Aren't you over-ovulating the propverbial pudding here, Matt? I thought Serge was some kind of Denim ... Now I'm gonna override standing orders and zap some YouChoob links ... I've decided I don't like 'em unless they're brilliant. Few are. Anyhoo, Scott Walker's Bish Bosch should be compulsory audio at the moment. Guess I'll also have to restore copies of Tilt and Drift... Be good, eh? And if you can't be good, be arbitrary. As one judge sez to another. |

 | | Annie K.: <Dom> you'll be wanting this link on hand: http://www.tineye.com. Also remember to set PGN Viewer to text only, in about 100 hours, or less. ;) |
|
Dec-06-12
 | | Domdaniel: <A> Will do, boss. I've never used the text-only feature in the past, but I think I decided last year that it was a useful tip. Worth the odd nanosecond, anyway. |

| Dec-06-12 | | MarkFinan: Hi there Dom, i thought you'd left for good!
Iv'e had a little break myself, not just from this site but from chess itself and im sure my elo ratings dropped by another 100 points! Iv'e learnt you really need to keep playing this game daily if you have any chance of improving at all.. Its not like the old riding a bike analogy, or at least to me its not.. Iv'e just downloaded an app for my new android phone called "Droidfish" that uses the stockfish engine, and iv got to get its strength ridiculously low to beat it.. Oh well.. I'll keep on keeping on :-)
Hope you're well... |

- Don't go to a mind reader, go to a palmist; I know you've got a palm. - If brains were rain, you'd be a desert.
- You're so fat, when you wear a yellow raincoat, people scream 'taxi' ... - You're so boring that you can't even entertain doubt. - Does your face hurt? Coz it's killing me. |

Ah. So *that's* what it is... ;) |
|
| Dec-06-12 | | mckmac: < Domdaniel > I'm sorry, too self-referential for you? I completely understand, Guv. Doesn't mean I like it. If you can't stand the heat... Come on, bring it now. |
|
| Dec-07-12 | | mckmac: < Dom > ...and that's a bit rough, though I know you can take a bit. Seriously now, I look up to you, mate. Don't bring me down. |
