Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

& u has a Klan, too. :)

Dec-11-12  waustad: Daniel Keyes was an English professor at Ohio University where I attended and worked for many years. I don't recall meeting him, though I probably saw him in Ellis Hall at one time or another. I used to play blitz chess with Walter Tevis from the same department, but that's another story.
Dec-11-12  mckmac: < waustad > My game has recently improved. Or so I like to think. Send me an email and we'll set something up.

Domdaniel: <Waustad> Tevis wrote a novel about a female chess prodigy, which was quite good. He knew the territory. Of course, he also wrote The Man Who Fell to Earth, without necessarily having a feel for aliens.

Apart from Keyes, I think the best story about the onset of genius is Camp Concentration by Tom Disch.

Domdaniel: Congrats to Thanh Phan for getting the Yifan-Socko Klu.

I stumbled over the first part, YU + no. My 2-letter shortlist of letter strings preceding 'no' included Zeno, xeno, wino, Nino, mono, lino, Juno, Bono, anno, and vino ...

Meanwhile, S. Quylthulg, Esquire, is in awesome form.

I have no real chance of getting one this year -- my brain, computer, broadband connection and reflexes are all much too slow. Not to mention the interrupt factor.

Domdaniel: Incroyable. Quylthulg isn't a humeme, he's a cluster of lateral-thinking expert systems and the world is his oyster. Or is it keister?

<<Kingsfoot>: How many suppose that GM Akobian does not or can not read our posts?> Quel pied! No body cares who will win: - the purpose is to keep your mind out of thinking about more important problems!
Dec-12-12  theodor: theodor: hi DOM, I've post my 'intrusion' without having read the other posts in your forum. Now I notice, that Ohio... has posted similar one! Quelle coincidence!
Dec-12-12  theodor: Domine, one year ago I have found the way 'Cheops' pyramide was built - but, in my country, the interrest about it is 'nul'! I made a presentation last week in the bg architect's club in Sofia - after having put 20 posters in 5 universities and 3 others(national radio ecc..)E-mails and facebook posts - more than 30 - to medias and embassadeurs in Sofia. And the mailed information to more than 10 000 members of the union of architects!- They came 15 friends of mine, and 8 others - 2 of them were 'singles', 2 others quited befor the end, and only one student! What a triumph! here is the resume: theory of the construction of the pyramid of Cheops:The theory is based on two suggestions: That the pyramids have been erected at the same time together with the sphinx-before 8 500 years and second-with the help of rain water(which was in abbondance at the end of the last glacial peryode)! The stone blocks were elevated with the help of water-locks. After the first about 20 meters, from the floor of the queen’s chamber upwards were build two elongated parallel pyramids (north and south pyramids) which inner contour coincides with the slope of the so called “air shafts”. Those “air shafts” are in fact overspills, which are also used for the leveling of those two “semipyramids”, based on the principle of the “connected vessels”. Facts which support this thesis: First:- On the walls of the chambers and passages exists salt deposits, which is only possible if there has flown salty water! But why salty water?-Because the elevataing power of the salty water is bigger! And second: salt avoids poluation of the water and, third:- during winter, water could freez! Herodot writes that “first was build the higher part and after that the lower and middle part”! Why? -Because the gathered rain water in the highest part is used in full value for the feeding of the lower water-locks/ otherwise, by laying down the stones ( and eventual rain falling) the removed water would overflow freely and would be partially lost! . Finally, from the scanned “air-shafts” from UPUAUT PROJECT, it could be seen, that the edge of the lower stone blocks, forming the lower part of the “air shafts”, are levelling with the rows of the pyramid!!!
Dec-12-12  waustad: Walter Tevis had a chess shrine in the garage behind his house with huge pictures of himself with celebrities. I recognized Florin Gheorghiu immediately but had no clue who the other one was. It was Sting from http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074851/ I read The Queen's Gambit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Qu... which was written close to when I knew him, but he never mentioned it. He did ask me once to go with him to Las Vegas to a tournament where we could split winnings and he would pay expenses. I don't think he realized that being able to trounce a class C/D player (USCF) in blitz every time over beers didn't mean that I had a clue how to play a real tournament.
Dec-12-12  waustad: My bad, Queen's Gambit was written several years later. He may have already left Athens by then.
Dec-13-12  Thanh Phan: <Domdaniel> Thank you :) This years set of clues seem to rely on knowledge of stronger puzzle theory then before, luck helps only some

Domdaniel: <Annie> Nah, other years I really expected to win a few. This time I don't. Ongoing connection problems -- I bought a 2nd wifi router today, different ISP. Working so far - but getting used to the weirdness of System 8 is also tricky.

Annie K.: 2nd router iz gud. Then you have a chance again, and there are still plenty of Klus to go. Meanwhile, <Switch> has used up his quota, and <MAJ> has not been sighted yet. ;)

Domdaniel: If CG was an (entro)pantomime, then MAJ would now enter in a flash of light.
Dec-14-12  theodor: heheh?! is that all you can say? thanks a lot!
Dec-14-12
Premium Chessgames Member
Annie K.: You're welcome. ;) OK then - the salt deposits don't prove much. Those pyramids are close to both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Because of the heat, in the entire area the air humidity is very high, and it's a salty humidity, as it comes from evaporated sea water... so you can easily get salt deposits on walls just from the air.
Dec-14-12  theodor: <Annie K.> dear Annie, thanks to answering. It's a sign of respect. Steam is only water! More: it's writen, that the grand gallery and the queen's chamber have thicker layer of salt! How could you explain that?(different quantities)
Dec-14-12
Premium Chessgames Member
Annie K.: Different times of exposure could cause that. The longer an area was open to the air, the more salty condensation would settle on it. It would make sense that these parts took longer to build and/or decorate than simple passage walls, and they would have wanted to do as much of that as possible in daylight.
Dec-15-12  MostlyAverageJoe: <Domdaniel: If CG was an (entro)pantomime, then MAJ would now enter in a flash of light.>

Am not particularly planning to do so. Busy with real life, much more so than last year.

I am mostly off this site anyway, but since last year CG agreed to transfer my membership extension wins to the Rinus Scholarship, I might try to replenish it some more, if I spot something amenable to one of the brute search methods, or if I get lucky with the first few off-the-wall interpretations.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> Good to see you around anyhow, even if you've sublimed or ascended or just got busier. I also have more distractions.
Dec-15-12  mckmac: Correction < Y'all > 'White Valiant', is a MuttonBirds song and was written by Don McGlashan alone. Apologies to 'The Front Lawn', and to Harry Sinclair.
