   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Drat. I logged in this morning, saw the Tower of Hanoi clue was live, solved it quickly - it's not hard - and went to the right game in about ten seconds.

Gone, of course. Shoulda logged in a minute earlier, I s'pose.

Dec-16-12  dakgootje: < Shoulda logged in a minute earlier, I s'pose.>

It wouldn't have helped dear dom. Whereas everyone thinks such instances are due to chance, they are not.

You have been Predicted.

CG.com uses advanced logarithms that include your previous log-in times; duration of your stay; your horoscope and the number of words in your previous posts. Furthermore they estimate how long a given clue will take and how long it take you.

Using this information, they make use of powerful mathematical concepts such as 'Addition' and 'Subtraction' to ensure you'll be just a couple of seconds too slow.

Attempts to counteract the System have been Predicted as well.

Dec-16-12  MostlyAverageJoe: <Annie> & <Dom> -- thanks for the kind words. Your opinion holds a thin edge over the opposition (currently consisting of <OCF> at Kibitzer's Café)

  Annie K.: <MAJ> aww, I'm sure <Ohio> didn't quite mean it that way. :D

<Dom> next time! ;) I slept through the bunch. They made me attend the most boring birthday party ever yesterday... I really like both the birthday girl and the hostess, so I went, but it was traumatically boring. Had to sleep it off. ;s

Dec-16-12  MostlyAverageJoe: <Annie> -- Yeah, I know. <OCF> posted it after I grabbed #28 (expecting it would be a premium, BTW, since the clue was rather obscure. Disappointed...).

OhioChessFan: I know there's no accounting for taste and all, but I may spend all day shaking my head per the seersucker comment and response. I've mentioned before to one of the people involved that part of humor is in letting the amusing thought hang unspoken forever, eg, "One is a group of cunning runts", and not in the jumping on a punchline with a clever setup, (I need to find a nice article in Cracked addressing that). But that someone else would say such an obvious response (obvious, and I might add, <wrong>, I got it even if they didn't) was the funniest thing they'd found in weeks, and someone else would express that they didn't get it at first glance! I guess there's no accounting for taste, but really now. I sort of feel bad even posting this, not trying to diss another kibitzer, I know <JFQ> accurately addressed the matter much more directly a few years back, but anyway. I don't feel any better for having typed this out, (I know it's awful grammatically, I'll pretend I am trying to speak colloquially) I usually do, expressing thoughts in writing and having the power to eliminate them from history is therapeutic, but I'll let it ride instead of just Xing out. Back to my regularly scheduled smh.

Domdaniel: <Ohio> Yep, hanging unspoken is the good part of humor. Because it's subtle, maybe - and we live in unsubtle times.
Dec-17-12  MostlyAverageJoe: <Dom> & <OCF> After seeing <TD>'s comment, I was contemplating posting a correction (not <lamenting his visit to the fortune teller>, but <<fondly remembering his visit...>>).

I think I am glad I did not...

OhioChessFan: I thought this comment of <Meme> came as close to capturing the essence of <Dom> as can be done in less than 10,000 words:

<An amalgam of mind & gutter>

Yours would have been funny Joe. I continue to be amazed at how differently other people view what is funny.

Dec-17-12  dakgootje: Part-gutter?

That would make us family.

Dec-17-12  mckmac: < OCF > <An amalgam of mind & gutter>

I'll second that!

Dec-17-12  mckmac: ...and you're back battin' it with Betty. 'Afternoon poppets. This first song was a world-wide smash and you don't need to be Simon Cowell to know why. We'll be following things up with a Tom Petty special. If you were 17 years old in 1977, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers pretty much ruled. Hey, anything that's Rock'n'Roll's fine.   Domdaniel: Wasn't 1977 the year of Elvis Costello's 'Radio Radio'? -- "and the radio is full of such a lot of fools trying to anaesthetize the way that you feel..."

The date is approximate: I didn't see him play live until early '78. Ancient history, like 78 rpm records.

Dec-18-12  mckmac: *ouch*
Dec-18-12  mckmac: Look < Dom >, I don't know about anyone else, but I would really like to know some details about your recent terrible misfortune. Questions that come to mind might include...Were you alone in the house at the time?...How did the fire start?...Are you fully insured, and how on earth are you managing to document such a massive and 'intangible' loss...Is the house habitable, and are you living there now?...Just how bad are your injuries?

I quite understand if you are trying to put this dreadful event behind you and choose not to elaborate any more than you already have. But I also want you to know that many of your friends here were shocked when we heard what had happened to you. Matt

Domdaniel: <Matt> Ah, questions, questions. If this wasn't for a pal I might feel like I was filling out another of those interminable claim forms ...

But the insurance situation is basically OK. Can't be sure how it started: I woke up surrounded by flames around 1.30am, and I hadn't been smoking in bed. Though I'd had a cigarette earlier, and electrical causes can't be entirely ruled out.

If I *had* been alone I might be dead now -- might have stayed to battle the blaze and rescue things, but I abandoned my floor to rescue my elderly mother on the floor below. Not that I did much rescuing, minus glasses, trousers, phone, etc. Then an ambulance took me away, and left the aged parent with a neighbour.

House won't be habitable for a while. I had three rooms full of books, papers, computers, discs, etc on the first floor: one was incinerated and the other two covered in sticky ash-water-gunk. Some stuff may be rescuable but I haven't looked closely yet.

I'm in an apartment with a new computer. Life goes on. Thanks for axing.

Dec-19-12  Memethecat: <Dom> I didn't realise your recent misfortune was so extensive, but you & your mum escaped with your life &, glib though it is, that really is all that matters.

Don't budge with the insurers, bastards will do anything to avoid paying what's due.

Domdaniel: <dak> Congrats with the Arthur Klu. I'm not sure just how I contrived to miss it -- I'd flipped through games for Hay, Clarke and Arthur about ten minutes earlier. The winner somehow escaped me.

Destiny, innit. Or maybe SF readers aren't quite as good at lateral thinking as we claim.

Annie K.: That latter theory does not seem to fit the available evidence. ;)
Dec-20-12  dakgootje: Thanks dom :)

I actually planned on checking the worlds games next - as in the story the world gets destroyed. But quite unexpectedly this game was the right one instead :)

Domdaniel: Hmmm. I think the world might be ending, in a slow, damp, undemonstrative sort of way. It's gone quite foggy.

You remember Foggy? The *other* Horseman of the Apocalypse, who got lost on his way to the biblical photo shoot?

Annie K.: Heheh. :) Ackshly, come to think of it, the weather *is* kinda drizzly and unpleasant around here too. Better watch out for Cloud Demons. They have a nasty sniffle, I hear. :s
Dec-20-12  mckmac: < Dom > Thanks for putting us better in the picture. Good luck, btw, in the Present Hunt. The competition must be running hot this year if you are yet to bag a trophy.
