   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

   Jan-06-19 Anand vs J Fedorowicz, 1990 (replies)

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: And there have been signs and portents, of course. This afternoon I got a taxi and the driver's name, according to his ID card, was ... Sam Nuklu.

True story. Actually it was Sam Something Nuklu, with a middle name I didn't catch.

Annie K.: 'You look a little shy: let me introduce you to that Klu. Nuklu --Sam: Sam --Nuklu.'
Dec-22-12

Domdaniel: Nuklu, perceiving that I was an atheist, smote my house with fire, incinerating previous prizes such as T-shirts and a wooden chess set. Then he showed up in the form of a cab driver to observe the effect.

But I still have enough membership credit for next year's comp. I'll be back.

Annie K.: Perhaps you could branch out and add the ChessBookie game to your repertoire too - another way to win membership extensions. :)

Domdaniel: Nuklu sez gambling is sinful, and gambling for play money insufficiently so.
Dec-22-12

Annie K.: Gambling for 4 month / 1 year membership extensions (the prizes for winning a regular leg / the championship leg, respectively, IIRC) may be sinful enough to meet Nuklu's disapproval, though. :p

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Annie> There are no 4 month memberships involved in the Bookie game, the minimum prize is 1 year. I should know :s

<Domdaniel> Ouch, that must be why Nuklu doesn't like me at all... ;-)

Annie K.: <Switch> thanks, I didn't remember that. I don't think there would be any objection to the 1 year prize either! :)
Dec-22-12  mckmac: < This is a bit better. Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!!! >

In the spingle spangle morning I'll come a mourning you.

Take me for a ride inside your Bentley, just a ride
We'll wave as we pass by, all the people as they make their way to jobs, they may well wish, somebody else did

We'll sing some old lost song, with the rites we'll right some wrongs, then put me down gently, because you know you said hey boy you're only sleeping

A bad ill hack
In a Cadillac
Carry him gently
In a Bentley
Dig some holes
With a Rolls
And wrap the body bag
In a Jag.

Here's your favorite holiday song, originally courtesy of <Stonehenge>: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqfZ... :)
