   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Klu #59 introduced a scale for reading complexity. I once tried to write a story where the reader could choose the complexity level, setting vocabulary size, number of sub-clauses, characters, narrative twists, etc. The 'same' piece could be written in the style of Enid Blyton ("Noddy and the Porroh Man") or Joyce (Finnegans Wake).

Riverrun, past Noddy and Big Ears, who were in bed with Molly...

Dec-23-12  mckmac: < Dom > I think you should know, that quite a few of us hold Enid Blyton in a particular high regard. She is, in fact, my personal Patron Saint. Is nothing above your devilish mockery sir?

I do not believe we are expecting too much, when we, your long suffering readers, demand a minimum level of respect and good old fashioned manners, from you, a gentleman of infinite education.

"I had a lovers quarrel with the world."
Robert Frost

I thought you'd find it innaresting. I'm thinking about it.

Dec-23-12  MostlyAverageJoe: Hey, <Dom>, while the <distinct aroma of burning> is still dissipating (BTW, I am glad to hear that nothing apart from material possessions suffered and wish you successful interaction with the insurers), I suppose that you won't bother doing the statistics of the Klu Hunt, right? If you wish, I can substitute for you in this task.

Cheers and Happy Christmas!

Annie K.: <MAJ> congrats on #57, but I'm having a little trouble forgiving you for having gotten #56 less than a minute ahead of me! :p I would have beaten you to it, but I wasted some time trying to find rook-odds games via the kibitzing search, before deciding that the games collections would be the more efficient way to go. :s

I've been keeping a running tally for this year, so here it is, after 61 klus:

SwitchingQuylthulg 5
kevinatcausa 5
BVer 5
MostlyAverageJoe 5
adoresome 5
JamesBJames 5

AnimusEtOblivio 4

Sastre 3

wienke7 2
sleepyirv 2
SamAtoms1980 2

Annie K.
imag
Thanh Phan
shalgo
The HeavenSmile
amoop
7krzem7
jalfano1
tcsetattr
goldfarbdj
OBIT
Shams
Helloween
dakgootje
Pi Guy
casaschi
jqwerty
shrdlu

For the overall stats, one should probably just dig up <Dom>'s summary from last year, and apply the above. ;)

Dec-23-12  MostlyAverageJoe: <Annie K.> Apologies for scooping #56 :-). I wasted some time before noticing the missing rook, but then used the downloaded database, looking for the string "PPPPPPPP/1NBQKBNR" in the FEN patterns. Luckily for me, I was going in the oldest-to-newest sequence of the games.

This year had a lot of "speed clues" where every second counted. I think that there were many more such cases than in the past, and, as a result, we have 6 people who maxed out (compared to the average of 2-per-year in the previous five hunts), and fewest total winners: he previous lists had 40, 43, 41, 38, and 36 different names on the list of winners; this year cannot possibly exceed 32...

Dec-24-12  mckmac: Merry Christmas Gerry/Domdaniel and friends. We're a bit ahead of you lot down here in God's own country. Hey, life's a bitch, and if it wasn't, it would not be worth getting the bike out for. Jeeze, Geeze.

This is for my first love, Adrienne.

Dec-24-12  mckmac: < Ohio Chess Fan > You seem to be implying that I have a 'questionable' connection with our esteemed Host. Let me assure you sir, nothing improper has ever passed between us, apart from the time when Dom threatened, and deservedly so, to "cut pff my Bishopric'. And even if it had, what concern is it of yrs you big busy-body you.

Domdaniel: < Dom threatened, and deservedly so, to "cut pff my Bishopric'.> Musta been when I tried to invent a laser shears for castrating sheep on the far side of the world by bouncing rays off the ozone layer. But then they moved the ozone layer. So the sheep down under are safe, but I might still nick a curate or six.

Merry Zoroastermas and leave a wee dram o' malt whisky out for Nuklu. Sam says he prefers rum'n'coke, though.

Dec-24-12  crawfb5: Good job on #64. Better late than never.

Domdaniel: And remember - guns only kill people, which barely impinges on the overall statistics. If you want speciocide and the extinction of humanity you'll need overpopulation, nukes, famine, peak oil, peak guano, pollution, carbon monoxide, a runaway greenhouse effect and a dose of religion ("God will save us").

You already got them? Then wave au revoir to the cosmic community and kiss humanity's ass goodbye. There are worse ways to pass the time.

Which is not a sequel to The King's Speech.

Dec-25-12  mckmac: ...and you are back with Marco69. You are with Station Radio. This is our last song of the year as we are all going on our hols tomorrow.Thank you for proving it with Marco. Next year we might have to fire up our own page, complete with pictures and maybe even an index. It only remains for me to thank Domdaniel, and on behalf of Betty, Amy, Mrs Marco, Serge, Wendell, and Phil, wish all our devoted listeners the very best for the season.

Annie K.: <Dom> your post here just reminded me of one of my old favorites, way back when I still used to listen to music: Lybian On a Jet Plane. Yes, it's a parody thereof. A good one. :)
