Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <mckmac> We are pleased to see that poetry down under is like restoration courtly smut writ large. I am reminded of both the Earl of Rochester and Leonard Cohen, which can't be a bad thing.

Domdaniel: <Alien Math> And a sane and logical stardate 2013 to you too. I've thought for a while that your username is the best of all (have they a Caissar for that? Get voting, humemes!).

Now I've become intrigued by your avatar as well. I thought at first it was a symbol from Sequoyah's syllabary, but it isn't? Another alphabet or a function symbol like nabla ... ?

I knew somebody whose holographic signature was a capital D followed by a squiggle -- essentially a damped oscillation. With some tweaking, I was able to write a formula for it.

Others are more difficult, which is, I suppose, the point of a signature.

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> Did you get the book I sent you yet? There's a 30 day time limit on the storage site I used to pass you the book.

Protip: When a friend responds to you, and offers you some help with something, in civilization it's "usual" to email the friend back and at least acknowledge receipt of the email and any booty it might contain.

Anything else will give your friends the curious notion that you don't actually give a @#$%.

Jan-07-13  frogbert: happy new year, dom. at least i hope it is. things have been better in my shop, too - 2012 was a freaky year in many ways. it set a very low bar for 2013, though - hopefully things can't get much worse. ;o)

Domdaniel: <Jess> Ah, yes, civilization. I remember it -- it used to reside in cities, and beyond were woods and tigers. But now one leaves civilization by being offline -- something that's happened a lot to me lately. I'm just trying out my 3rd or 4th method of getting online. I'll get back to you if this works.

Spent the afternoon and early evening sitting in a hospital - in my Leonard Cohen hat and leather gloves - waiting to meet a 'geriatric consultant' who never showed up. They forget so easily, don't they?

Speaking of endings, I found out at the weekend that an old friend and chess teammate had died. Of Alzheimer-related issues, aged 55. Scary and sad, innit.

Jan-07-13  mckmac: < Domdaniel > "like restoration courtly smut writ large" My dear sir, Try, though I have, both, when in my cups, and desperately, when sober as May's morning rain, I can not recall, nor do I wish to recall, uno complimento to treasure more highly. Of course, you know, that it's all your fault, pretty much, such as it is. I am, etc

Domdaniel: <mckmac> I was thinking for some reason of a verse by the late Earl entitled something like "One Writing Against His Pricke" ... I used to wonder whether it was 'against' in the sense of "shouldn't be allowed, those things" or as in a table or writing-desk. It has a line "Base metal hanger by your master's thigh", as I recall.

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> thanks for sending that amazing email, I really appreciate that. I'll get back to you soon. Thanks to the precise detail and nuanced observation you've shared, I'll have to digest a bit before responding.

I will also spend some thought on what book to send you next.

You're an amazing man mate, I'm on your side, whatever side that is, so long as we live.

Jan-07-13  waustad: Since a hanger is a sword type, a base metal one could put one in a world of hurt in certain situations. Sorry, I probably read too much 18/19th century fiction.
Jan-08-13  frogbert: <I'm on your side, whatever side that is>

options are plentyful:

left?
right?
inside?
outside?
upside?
downside?
countryside?
ringside?
blind side?
wrong side?
no side?

i hope that helped.

Domdaniel: <waustad> A hanger is indeed a sword, and nobody can read too much 18th century fiction -- either the original stuff like Swift and Sterne, or the period pastiche like Pynchon's Mason & Dixon. (My signed copy of the latter survived the fire and is now also a singed copy -- which probably just proves it's a fake).

As for base metals, I shall have to consult my armorer. A lead rapier or a nickel dirk might not be too useful, but nor would a golden scimitar, however noble. Watered steel of Damascus seems to be the thing.

Annie K.: <My signed copy of the latter survived the fire>

Hey, kewl! :)

More likely, proves that nobody who had been about there has ever heard of Pynchon. This can happen, yanno. ;p

Jan-08-13  mckmac: < AnnieK...nobody who had been about there has ever heard of Pynchon. This can happen, yanno. ;p > I had heard of, but never read Dom's offsider 'till very recently. $2 for Gravity's Rainbow at my local op-shop people! It's long and kind of racey. Funny too.
Jan-09-13  mckmac: Right. This is my job, and I don't remember ever signing up for it. Look at yr freekin' numbers people. 1.The Magician. 2. The High Priestess 3. The Empress 4. The Emperor 5. The Heirophant 6. The Lovers 7. The Chariot 8. Strength 9. The Hermit.

just look.

Annie K.: I can't look. That "Heirophant" is hurting my eyes. :s
Jan-10-13  mckmac: I know you all think I'm nuts on this but just hear me out and I promise to never bother you on this particular topic again.

I don't believe in 'numerology' or anything else like that for that matter. I go to Church every Sunday and the good Reverend Clay may be broadminded but he's not *that* broadminded. My official line is that it is simply 'superstitious nonsense'. But it is interesting nonsense.

The idea I really like goes like this...One of the underpinning fabrics of the Universe is vibration. Behold the atom! Vibration can be represented numerically, or digitally, look, for example, at the digital recording studio.

When we were babies, our Mothers said our names to us a thousand thousand times. That sound, long before we learn to talk, we hear as a chord, or a note. That chord gradually enters our souls and becomes part of who we are and who we become.

Domdaniel: Nonsense becomes interesting as its informatic density increases.

I wish I had a gizmo for 'beholding' atoms. What next, gluons?

Jan-11-13  mckmac: < Domdaniel > Okay, I'll have a bash, though I'm pretty sure I will regret this...So the alphabet runs from a=1 down to i= 9 then back to j=1, down to r=9 and ends with z=8. So it's really just a base 9 thing.

Numerology recognises the numbers 1 through 9 and then the 'Master Mumbers'. They are 11, 22, 33,etc. So 7777777 is a Master Number but 'diluted ' when compared to 77. Back later

Jan-11-13  mckmac: < Dom > So, to do a name is simple. Let's look at Barack Obama, as an example. Barack = 2+1+9+1+3+2 =16 =7 Obama = 6+2+1+4+1 = 14 = 5. Barack Obama = 7 + 5 = 12 = 3.

The books say that if a person has a large public profile, then, only the first and last names really are needed. For most of us mere mortals, the full name is used.

Now comes the tricky bit. There are 100's of books on numbers and each one will tell you what the author 'thinks' 3 means. Bypass all that and just have a look at The Tarot. 3 is The Empress, or The Queen. Tarot readers define The Empress as 'the power behind the throne'. She is clearly all about authority, of the feminine kind.

But there aren't enough positions of power on the planet to house all the 3's, let alone the 4's(The Emperor). So we need to look at some basic psychology now and here the concept of 'The Shadow' is particularly useful.

1. The Magician Keyword Independence, Shadow, Dependence 2. The High Priestess, KW Knowledge, Sh, Ignorance 3. The Empress, KW Feminine Authority, Sh, Neurotic Authority 4. The Emperor, Masculine Authority, Sh, The Bully 5.The Heirophant KW Spiritual Authority on Earth, Sh, Institutional Corruption 6.The Lovers KW, Stability, Sh, Instability 7. The Chariot, KW, The Meeter of Challenges, Sh, The Coward 8. Strength, KW, Power, Sh, Weakness 9. The Hermit KW, Hope, Sh, Despair 11. KW,The Builder, The Creator, Sh, The Destroyer

There's a bit more I want to say on this but I need to go sell some books so I can buy a beer tonight. Back later
