   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Feb-09-13  waustad: So far it seems too much like Agatha Christie. That's not bad, but I've been reading Ford recently and find him almost as funny as Haiiason (sp?). How can you beat a title like "Who in Hell is Wanda Fuca?"
Feb-09-13  waustad: JFQ may even still be in the area.
Feb-11-13  waustad: After completing A Death in Summer I think that Black goes places Christie never would, but the 1960 time frame and rich folk made it feel that way.

OhioChessFan: Oscar sprang out of bed.

He finally put his foot down with his girlfriend.

Why did the Blade Runner use a gun?

He won't have a leg to stand on in court.

Feb-14-13  mckmac: < Domdaniel > I hope things are going alright with you.

< Corrections & Alterations & Additions Dept > Who knew?, derrierre has 4 arrrs. Unbelievable but true. Also, that one needs to read "... desperate worship of some other, blessed,..." : and there is also, ... "wild wanton night-tossed hair"...

The title for "Of course you have a certain arrogance,"... is, "Come Outside And Say That To Me". Cheers, Matt

Feb-17-13  mckmac: < Domdaniel & friends > On our local public radio station they have a very good program on weekday afternoons hosted by broadcasting legend Jim Mora. They regularly run a quiz called 'Link Three' whereby three songs are introduced and played and the listeners are asked to try and establish a link between them. I used to always tune in when I was working as a Housepainter, and I only rarely got the answer right. Can anyone get this one? It's not too obscure :)

Annie K.: BTW, to all concerned: try not to be. ;)

I have it on fairly good authority that our friend is alive... although he would probably deny that. In fact, he *had* - <personally> - claimed otherwise, in a recent exchange. Therefore, all seems to be, more or less, well. :p

Only last week I met Dave Dobbyn for the first time. I was sitting just up from The Courthouse when he quite simply passed by me. I put down my cigarrette, called out "Mr Dobbyn" and scurried up and shook his hand. I told him I was a very big fan and that my favourite song was "Beside You". As Henry Miller once said "there's only the quick and the dead".

The cat, not the scarf.

Annie K.: Heh. Looks bloody cute, I don't think any of mine ever tried that.

Although the considerably warmer climate may have something to do with the apparent regrettable lack of local Scarfomorphic Felines - evolution may not have favored this tendency at +30°C... ;s

Domdaniel: Hmm. Now here's something mildly diverting...

I thought I'd check out Bach on Youchoob, as interpreted by Glenn Gould ... http://youtu.be/UGPJDgp2-9A

And who should turn up among the bitchy comments but an old CG acquaintance ... one Daniel 3.14159 ... who once said "Die, Old Man" to me. Clever, that.

Annie K.: Yeah, the bitchily inclined do gravitate to YT, as they used to to Yahoo, and other such unmoderated "social" cesspools. It's a small world, innit. Too small, sometimes.
Mar-08-13  hms123: <Dom>

Have you read anything by <Gene Kerrigan>?

I just got a copy of <The Rage>.

Domdaniel: <H> I *know* Gene K ... nice guy, brilliant writer ... former cinema projectionist (hard-boiled) and journalist, writes a mean thriller.
Mar-19-13  hms123: <Dom> I finished <The Rage> about a week ago and really enjoyed it. If I move to Ireland will I be able to write like he does? Bet not.
