Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Sure. Solid, generally hard-working, bit boring.

Annie K.: <Dom> brilliant, looks like you're getting in shape for Klu season! ;)
Nov-30-13  dakgootje: <growing tulips?>

Yes - our most ancient artform; entangled with the Dutch identity.

Every young adolescent gets a small cute tulip-bulb, to love and care for. When the flower is at its peak, they'll have to snap it off and eat it.

Which has clear overtones of the circle of life, masculinity, and the importance of developing insatiable markets for your niche-product.

Domdaniel: <dak> ... "the circle of life, masculinity"? -- whatever happened to the circle of life + femininity? Surely the females of the species have priority in terms of circles of life? Or ellipses and parabolas of life?
Dec-01-13  dakgootje: The masculinity-part is about the brutal and needless killing of handraised life.

OhioChessFan: Oh dear, such an innocuous comment on your part, and mine, and somehow we're awful Cretins. You'd think truth would count for <something> There are times I sit and wonder how people can be so divorced from reality.
Dec-04-13  Travis Bickle: <OhioChessFan: ... There are times I sit and wonder how people can be so divorced from reality.> Mr Presley it's called insanity... ; P
Dec-04-13  Colonel Mortimer: <OCF> <There are times I sit and wonder how people can be so divorced from reality.>

Do you include those who believe man walked with dinosaurs, and who believe the world is only 10,000 years old?

Dec-04-13  MarkFinan: <LIFEĀ MasterĀ AJ: <Dom> Here - you are dead wrong. (And you are totally clueless, as well>

I'm sorry Dom.. It appears that saying something in "my favour" has brought about the old double insult stating the same thing, from LMAJ! Oh well, I logged in 24hrs after foci was showing signs of strain and find he's gone completely ott. Even talking aloud to "The great Indian spirit". I always feel the need to apologise to whoever TheFocus gives grief to for saying anything in my defense, so I am sorry about that.

OhioChessFan: I regret even bringing mention of the dustup here but still can't stop myself from another mention. <MF> the issue is not saying something in your favor. I mean, I think one thing you can count per me and <Dom> is to say the truth, the best we can determine it. That might even put the two of us on opposite sides on a particular matter, but there you go.

I am certainly not on "your side", I think you bear some fault here, I have surely called you out on other issues before, but on the specific matter under consideration, Dom and I spoke truth, and it happened to fall on your side. I am bewildered at the incredible affinity for untruth in response.

Dec-04-13  MarkFinan: Elvis.. I have to disagree with you. If I deserve something I'll be the first to admit it, but if you show me exactly what I said to deserve being accused of attacking someone's child and him going completely insane, then I won't complain 😃

So.. Show me what I said to deserve his crazy accusations?? You can't..

I'm sorry but I'll tell you exactly what's happened here..... the admins have told him off (I received an email!!) and he went nuts and blames me. EOL!!! as AJ would shout.

OhioChessFan: <but if you show me exactly what I said to deserve being accused of attacking someone's child and him going completely insane, then I won't complain >

I've seen no evidence at all per the attacking the child issue, and have been thinking myself there almost has to be some mental health issues. You must concede that to some degree you've stirred the pot.

Dec-04-13  MarkFinan: Well yeah. I'm gonna reluctantly agree with you, although I wasn't to know how he'd react! I don't think he's mentally ill, i just think his prides been hurt and he has no emotional stability! I really do find it offensive he'd accuse me of threatening, nay ATTACKING his kid, question my childhood, and call me "sick, warped, twisted, evil, etc etc etc "(And calling me an etcetera was particularly painful lol) and over what exactly??

Call me touchy. I just think it was all completely unwarranted.

Dec-04-13  MarkFinan: And you know what bothers me the most?? That when the usual little idiots run there saying they understand him, not one of them, not one of those idiots thought to ask.... What do you mean he attacked your child? That robed. Bishop would agree with public executions, as long as im the one being executed, lol. If this was the other way around, he'd be jumping off a cliff judging by his emotional instability yesterday.

My dear <dak> what about when the exact opposite happens?

Rare, but here is possibly the most notorious "Reverse-Tulip-Clipping" incident:

Have you ever reached this strange and symmetrical position after 10 moves in the French? Exchange? Droidfish, which is basically stockfish on your phone has just had an update and there's a few new openings in its book.

Domdaniel: <Mark> I've had positions *like* that, though maybe not that exact one. I usually avoid playing ...c6 as Black in the Exchange French. It's more active to play ...Nc6, even if the d-pawn is a bit weaker.

As for the other stuff ... we live in strange times. If <Ohio> tells me he was praying for reconciliation, I might even start to believe in miracles. Though Ned hasn't come round to sweetness'n'light.
