   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <Respect> ... ackshly, *respect* isn't sufficient ... the word I was searching for is 'awe' ...

As John Wayne reputedly said in one of those Bible epic movies ...

JW: "Shurely this man is the son of Gawd..."

Director: "That's good, John, but could ya put more awe in your voice?"

JW: "Aw, shurely this man is the son of gawd..."

  chancho: <Dom> Thanks, I guess. :-)

The idea of eventually passing <acirce> on the posting list is actually quite depressing, but I can take some solace at least in knowing that I'm way behind posters 3-2 and 1.

I intend to slow down a bit and hopefully <someday> you can pass me by.

:-))

A slug is sortof a shell-less snail... would you prefer to be called Slug? ;)

Feb-06-14

Domdaniel: No, thank you. I'm slug-ophobic. Horrible creatures.

I think he even played chess.

perfidious: <Dom> Have again taken to playing occasional chess online, usually 15-20 minute games.

Bizarre one from minutes ago:

<hushpuckena-gelden

1.d4 e5 (Remember facing this once in a serious game, against a player ~1900 US) 2.dxe5 Nc6 3.Nf3 Qe7 4.Nc3 (So slender is my knowledge of this mess that Nc3 seemed strongest. At the CG database, the most common response is 4.Bf4, but I remember seeing some miniatures in my youth where White buys the farm after trying to hold the pawn thus) Nxe5 5.Bf4 (Not in the DB, and I am sceptical of this move, despite the speedy end) Nxf3+ 6.gxf3 d6 7.e3 h5 8.h4 Nh6 9.e4 g6 10.Nd5 Qd7 11.Nf6+ 1-0>

Domdaniel: <perf> Very nice. These days, I miss those late-opening collapses, now that I only play club matches.
Feb-09-14  waustad: With Alina L'ami at Bunratty there will probably be a chessbase article with lots of pictures.

Domdaniel: <waustad> I guess so. I haven't played in Bunratty for the past few years, even though it's not far away and claims to be Ireland's leading weekend event.
