 | | OhioChessFan: <I was going to propose a Clue Suggestion Box very similar to the Pun Voting Booth, where people could submit new ideas for next year's contest, with the explicit understanding that they would not solve their own puzzle in real time. I did not realize that Daniel created 80% of the clues, so perhaps the group could save him some time and energy.> I can safely say I wouldn't bother based on the time spent/payoff ratio I've experienced. It's very hard to create clues that aren't too easy/too hard so my sympathies are with him to that extent. My rejected clues used up all that sympathy. One of them was declined with the comment that Daniel would not have gotten it! Hello? It was more of a verbal clue than anything, which are greatly under-reperesented IMHO. |

 | | Domdaniel: <chancho> Gaeilge, yet! I'm impressed. I think the literal meaning is something like "a satisfied new year" ... which is better than 'happy' in many ways. |

Won my first game in 20 mins, playing Black. Exchange French where White took a wrong turn.
Tomorrow will be tougher. |

 | | Domdaniel: With three games on the Saturday, 6-round weekend Swiss tournaments can be tiring. Some people opt for a bye in round 4 on Saturday evening. I've found another method. Play in R.4, get paired against a higher-rated opponent, win a pawn after 15-20 moves in a relatively simple position... and offer a draw. They'll usually take it. If they don't, knuckle down and beat 'em. This has worked for me two years running. |

 | | Domdaniel: <tpstar> - <What do you think about reserving the last five clues (60-64) for people who have not won anything yet?>
That sounds like a good idea. Though, as a former 5-time winner, I'm not entirely sure that I'd want to win an easy one. |

| Jan-07-16 | | cro777: <Domdaniel> You must love this! Nakamura is playing Komodo (the latest developmental version) in a 4-game odds match. Yesterday, in the first game (pawn-and-move odds), with the black pieces Komodo played the French Defense with the f7 pawn removed (!) and managed to draw. 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5

 | | OhioChessFan: Alas, and they are doing the Caissars. Do we have to endure another year of <td> winning funniest kibitzer for his apparently hilarious "$20" routine? I know it shouldn't matter, but it drives me bonkers. <cro> I think CC is probably played out if engines are that good. Sort of depressing. |

I know it shouldn't matter, but it drives me bonkers.> You have a sense of humor. I have, I think, a sense of humour. Quite a lot of the time, these are in agreement. TD also has a sensa Yuma. Enough said. |

 | | Domdaniel: <cro> A French without an f-pawn? I'd have been tempted to avoid the tactical Exchange lines, and go for something where Black needed an eventual ...f6. But, as <Ohio> says, it's depressing. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Shams> - <This and your other French games I'd love to see>
I have to admit I've only had one French game recently: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.c4 Nf6 -- Exchange Variation, Monte Carlo line (in which I'd lost 3 games in the last couple of years - but my opponent here was rated about 8-900 points lower) ... I won quickly when he played b3 (unprotecting the Nc3, inviting ...Bb4) and Qc2 (losing to ...Ne4). As for my other games: some began with 1.d4 or 1.c4 ... and in one, after 1.e4, I'm afraid I replied 1...Nc6. Sometimes my inner Nimzo breaks out. |

| Jan-09-16 | | cro777: <Ohio> <Dom> That’s why I consider Arno Nickel’s idea to propose a slight change to the draw rules to be very interesting. I would also support a challenge in Lasker chess against Arno. It might be an opportunity for Chessgames.com to promote a valuable idea. Maybe Daniel Freeman needs some encouragement. |

 | | Domdaniel: Steinitz, on playing Blackburne: "After a few words Blackburne pounced upon me and hammered at my face and eyes with fullest force about a dozen blows...but at last I had the good fortune to release myself from his drunken grip, and I broke the window pane with his head, which sobered him down a little.” <cro> Yes, I think a *slight* change in the rules is justified... if they were able to modify the game in the 1600s, why can't we? |

 | | Domdaniel: <Shams> - <French Games> ...
I had a French Tarrasch 3.Nd2 in a club match (Munster league, Ireland) last weekend. It must be 2 years since I last saw 3.Nd2.
I played 3...c5 and continued with a line which I've used a few times before: 3.Nd2 c5 4.Ngf3 cxd4 5.Nxd4 a6!? (better, maybe 5...Nc6 or 5...Ne7).
6.e5 Nc6
7.N2f3 Bc5
8.c3 Nge7
9.Bd3 Ng6
10.Nxc6 bxc6
11.0-0 a5
12.Qe2 Qc7
13.Rb1 Qa7
14.h4 Ba6
15.h5 Bxd3
16.Qxd3 Ne7
17.Ng5 h6
18.Nh3 Rb8
19.Kh1 g5!?
Until now, Black has been holding on, and 19...0-0 may continue to do so. But the sharper 19...g5 leads to a more interesting game. A few moves later, I was completely lost. However, I had one mating threat trap/swindle left before resigning, and my unfortunate opponent duly walked into it. Ouch. 0-1. Ironically, in my other game that day I played much better - sacrificing my Queen for a Rook and Bishop, then doubling my Rooks on his 7th rank and threatening mate. But my resourceful opponent avoided the loss, escaped a draw, and eventually even won -- though strong players lined up afterwards to say what a good game it was. |

 | | Domdaniel: <tech> I know that you, sir, have a fine sense of humor. As do certain other stalwarts such as <Ohio>, <Jess>, <Annie>, and a few more. But, these aside, there are CG members who wouldn't get a joke if it rolled right up and bit 'em on the funnybone. What can we do about the humourless? Probably not very much, I reckon. Those of us with a sense of irony/humour/etc have to understand that we're a minority. I *do* find many of your remarks funny, and I hope this is reciprocated. And I know that there are people out there who are just confused by both of us. I see no point in trying to score points against one another in this regard. |

 | | Domdaniel: <shams> Here is the easiest win in the French I've had in years: W: JOD
B: GM (Dom)
1.e4 e6
2.d4 d5
3.exd5 exd5
4.c4
The Monte Carlo variation. I've lost three games against this in the past couple of years, so I wasn't thrilled to see it, even against an opponent rated several hundred points below me.
4...Nf6
5.Nc3 Be7
6.Nf3 Nc6
I've played this before, and got quite a good position, but went on to lose. Structurally, it is similar to a Petrov, with no pawns on the e-file.
7.b3 (?) Bg4
8.Be2 0-0
9.Be3 Bb4
Black is better.
10.Qc2? Ne4
11.Bd2 Bxf3
12.Bxf3 Nxd4
13.Qd3 Nxf3+
14.gxf3 Nxd2
15.Qxd2 d4
16.0-0-0 dxc3
17.Qf4 Qe7
18.Rhg1 g6
19.h4 Qe2
0-1
This was the 1st round of the Mulcahy Memorial, Cork 2016, and was the first game to finish: I used about 10 minutes on the clock.
Ironically, my opponent here went on to win a grading prize and finish ahead of me. He started with two losses, but rallied well to finish on 3/6. Meanwhile, I began with 2.5/4, then lost my final two games to finish on just 2.5. |

 | | moronovich: Hi <Dom> !
Saw your question at Honzas´forum and know you didn´t ask me,but may be I can chip in with a little inspiration. I have several time played loos games with friends and foes where we simply mailed and/or phoned the moves to each other.Usually 2 or 4 games at a time. All in a friendly/gentlemanlike atmosphere were
we trusted each other and used around 2-3 days a move, but with no
strict/fixed regulation.
It was fun, instructive and in all ways a win-win situation.
As when I started my journey I went from 15-1600 to 2000 in one and a half year, also due to this way of playing chess. Many yars later I e.g. played with a GM
(not CC) with whom I have worked with for several years and at the same time with a friend who was 1600ayer without any contradiction in that. So many possibilities and can be highly recommended.
Feel free to ask if any questions.
Time to hit my pillow. This was my second post as the damned computer swallowed the first one ;) Good luck with your decission. |
