Dec-23-15
 | | Richard Taylor: <Domdaniel> Are they tougher this year? I tried to learn how to do cryptic crosswords once but gave up on it... Seasons greetings if I don't look in here again, I probably will say something as NZ starts Dec the 25th just about the first in the world so one likes to be first! |
|
Dec-23-15
 | | Domdaniel: They're not tougher, but I'm a bit slower ... I have now been beaten to six clues by a second or two. |
|
| Dec-24-15 | | Alien Math: Merry Christmas Domdaniel! |
|
Dec-24-15
 | | Domdaniel: You too, <Alien Math>! |
|
Dec-24-15
 | | moronovich: Glædelig Jul <Domdaniel> ! |
|
Dec-24-15
 | | Domdaniel: <moronovich> Tak. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
Merry Christmas, <D'om>. I was just thinking of you yesterday because your name reminds me of one of my favorite William Faulkner characters. He's a mixed Creole/Indian/Caucasian hunting guide named <DOOM>. They give him that ominous sobriquet because none of his Mississippi colleagues can speak French. His actual name is <D'homme>. Although I frequently tell my students I can "speak French," I'm not sure myself if that name means "Of man" or "The man." It strikes me that the name suits you either way. |
|
Dec-25-15
 | | chancho: Merry Christmas, <Dom>! |
|
Dec-25-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> I reckon 'the man' would be LOM, as in Herbert.
"I'm waiting for LOM, 26 dollars in my ... pompom?" |
|
| Dec-25-15 | | wordfunph: <DomDaniel> Merry Christmas! |
|
Dec-25-15
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<D'homme> aahaaa
In Korea "pompom" is Dish Washing Liquid, and that's EXACTLY how they say it too. |
|
| Dec-26-15 | | Boomie: In Hollywood, it's <D'homme> and <D'hommer> |
|
Dec-26-15
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Teem> Is Homer Simpson part of Hollywood? He may have his hand print in GROWLER'S CHINESE THEATRE for all we know. Just in case you ever go to Korea, here's a guide to pronounce the common English words Korean people use. "slipper"
That's the word they use for the fuzzy things you put on your feet, same as us. But if you say "slipper" to them all you get is a blank look. Here's how to say it:
"sha ri bah"
Here's one more: Farmer's Market.
You need to say it like this:
Fahl- mahl Mahl - giht
When you have a possessive "s", they don't ever say it. Not ever. If they want to say "It's Jess's stapler" they say "Ee-tah Jesh-ah Hod Cha- kish-ah ." There is actually no word in Korea for stapler.
They didn't have any staplers at all in Korea until they brought over 20,000 German engineers and doctors in the early 1980s to act as consultants, in order to industrialize. "Hotchkiss" was the brand name printed on the German staplers they got. Hence, "Hod Cha- kish-ah"
Not many Korean phonemes end with a hard consonant, so they always breathe out a vowel of some sort after such phonemes. They also can't say the letter "s"
They always say "sh" instead.
CCTV = Shee Shee Tee Vee
Jess = Jesh-ah |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
Good heavens you meant "Dumb and Dumber."
Am I ever Dumb!! |
|
| Dec-26-15 | | Boomie: <Jesh-ah: Good heavens> Doh! Of course Homer's hand print is in front of Crummy's Chinese Theater. You know he made it because there are 3 fingers like all cartoon celebrities. <Dumb and Dumber> Sadly that was the best I could come up with in the moment. Perhaps it means "Man" and "Manner", as in "I'm manner than you, brah!" |
|
Dec-26-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Jesh> I read today that S. Korea is the most wired society on the planet. Just, yanno, saying. Hippy Nude Ears! |
|
| Dec-26-15 | | Boomie: <D'homme: Hippy Nude Ears!> That is dangerously close to a copyright infringement but I'll let it go because it is such a fine variation. |
|
Dec-26-15
 | | Domdaniel: I'm an idiot. An eejit. A dumbhead. Ein fussballkopf... zero klus this year. |
|
| Dec-26-15 | | Boomie: <Dom: zero klus>
Be Not Afraid.
Only 360 shopping days left before the next contest.
Time to start studying. |
|
Dec-26-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Time to start studying.> No, time to shed my self-imposed handicaps -- by making a copy of the CG database, by having anagram and maths sites (etc) readily at hand, and just by being prepared. This year I came naked to it, and was just too slow on about six occasions. |
|
Dec-29-15
 | | OhioChessFan: Sounds like way too much work for what should be a fun time. That's my excuse, anyway. |
|
Dec-29-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> Yes, but I don't really think of chess-related stuff as 'work' ... I'm an amateur when it comes to games and all who sail in 'em. So whether I'm anticipating themes and methods that might turn up in Clues (or not, in this year's case), or trying to revamp my openings for next weekend's tournament ... 'work' is not the most accurate term. Though I admit that 'play' doesn't cover it either. |
|
Dec-29-15
 | | OhioChessFan: I aniticpated your winner on clue 64 last year, but I thought of it maybe 5 years ago and didn't remember it by the time it showed up. I used to send in a lot of clues to cg.c and they used to use almost none of them. 2 of......15? I don't know. A lot of work and nothing to show for it. Now I sort of file them in my mind and see if they happen to ask one that I've already come up with. It's not working. As for getting ready, then downloading the player directory into a searchable Excel or similar file is a necessity. I don't know how much work it would be to have a searchable game file.
If you got this mess out of a clue, then you'd already have the answer, M _ _ _ S - M _ _ _ _ _ _ Y which would be a great help. I think some of the techniques used by the 5 Bangers treads very dangerously on the line of violating the spirit of the rules. eg If I am not allowed to search 600,000 games at a time, why am I allowed to search 100 games at a time? It's brute force, in fact, just not to the entire database degree, but a large degree nonetheless, and I think at a minimum it's unsporting. Recognizing, of course, I'm not The Final Arbiter of such things. |
|
Dec-29-15
 | | tpstar: <I used to send in a lot of clues to cg.c> I was going to propose a Clue Suggestion Box very similar to the Pun Voting Booth, where people could submit new ideas for next year's contest, with the explicit understanding that they would not solve their own puzzle in real time. I did not realize that Daniel created 80% of the clues, so perhaps the group could save him some time and energy. What do you think about reserving the last five clues (60-64) for people who have not won anything yet? It seems like a reasonable compromise, allowing more folks to win. <5 bangers> I get a kick out of solving these puzzles versus an army of computers. Then I realize they probably saw the banner already and didn't want the prize. :P |
|
Dec-29-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> Searching for partial names can be a big help. In other years I used to search for possible solutions in other programs, like the Fritz database - which I don't have on this machine. Once I got a solution, Sunjaikin, when I only had 'sunjai' for sure. |
