 | | Domdaniel: <Alien Math> That is really beautiful, thank you. I think that "before you there was doubt, and google translate" is possibly the nicest thing that anyone has ever said about me. Thanks again. You're a star. |

 | | Domdaniel: <luftforlife> - "Marguerita told Tom" ... hey, isn't that the 3rd Velvets album? I love that record, though I saw Lou Reed play live just once, in 1979. I've seen John Cale live about ten times. And Nico, Sterling Morrison and Mo Tucker too... I've seen the Velvets, spread across several years... |
|
| May-20-16 | | luftforlife: <Domdaniel>: "Some Kinda Love," from The Velvet Underground's eponymous release. I used to sing Lou Reed's "Coney Island Baby," John Cale's "Emily," and Nico's "Eulogy to Lenny Bruce." Never saw VU, but I love them just the same. |
|
May-20-16
 | | Domdaniel: <luftforlife> That is fascinating. And *so* cool.
"Never again will we get together to die ..."
Wonderful music. Cale is still my favourite. |

| May-25-16 | | User not found: I've been meaning to come speak to you about something you said about opiates at some point earlier this year, but I'll understand if you don't want to address it on this site now knowing who's about, and what he'll be ,calling you due to ignorance. In the meantime, have you heard of an author called Donald Goines? He wrote crime novels, brilliant writer and like your favorite author William Burroughs II (At least I think he's your favorite?) was addicted to heroin. Check this mini doc when you have the time, mate. It's good and Donald Goines is a really interesting character.. https://youtu.be/2MlBGRiSYVU |
|
May-25-16
 | | Domdaniel: <User nf> No, I never heard of Goines that I remember. I'll check him out, though. Wm Burroughs is far from my favorite writer these days. All in all, I think he was a vicious bastard who needlessly and drunkenly shot his wife, and treated several other people badly as well. Was he a 'great' writer? Well, maybe, in some ways... but I wouldn't want to follow him. In my own opiate days (aha, an admission!) I maybe had a higher opinion of Burroughs. But not now. And apart from one or two early books, he's hard to re-read. |
|
May-25-16
 | | Domdaniel: I reckon my favorite writer is still Thomas Pynchon, whom I first read in the 1970s. I've just reread 'Inherent Vice' (and watched the movie). His other great books include V, The Crying of Lot 49, Gravity's Rainbow, Vineland, Mason & Dixon, Against the Day, Bleeding Edge. Other brilliant writers that I like: M. John Harrison, William Gibson, David Foster Wallace, Hannu Rajaniemi, J.L. Borges (and others)... |
|
May-25-16
 | | Domdaniel: ... and Jack Womack (Elvissy, Terraplane, etc.) ...
Also: Christine Brooke-Rose, William Burroughs, B.S. Johnson, Kathy Acker, Iain Banks, Samuel R. Delany, et al. |

 | | Domdaniel: RIP, Viktor Korchnoi.
I saw Korchnoi play at a simultaneous in Dublin in the 1980s. I was present as a spectator - for some stupid reason I chose not to play myself against him. I wish I had. My rating had recently gone above 2000, and I thought I was too good to play in a simul. Dumb. |
|
| Jun-12-16 | | User not found: Oh Dom. Dom Dom Dom Dom Dom. Did you see the game last night?? Did you see that 93rd minute goal? I broke down. It broke my heart! We were brilliant mate, I was really proud of the teams but the fans just let us down... <again!>. The French and Russian fans along with the <French police> ganged up on us, they waited for us, they provoked us, but I still can't defend the indefensible. On a positive note we were brilliant and today the Irish play. Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, both the same to me so I hope you get a result. Today I am Irish. 93rd minute though! :( |
|
Jun-12-16
 | | Domdaniel: <User not Huck Finn> I didn't, ackshully. I watched Wales vs Slovakia (a surprisingly good game, and a fine result) as well as most of Switzerland vs Albania (boring). Then I figured I'd had enough football for the day. I missed the excitement. England deserved to win, but the Putinoids nicked a late one. (I remember 1988, when Ireland beat England and drew with the Russians, and still didn't make the next round). Oh well. Still a lot to play for. And I must say it's good to see Wales on top of the group. Bale's goal was a beauty. |
|
Jun-12-16
 | | Domdaniel: <Mark> Just watched a poor Northern Ireland lose 1-0 to a marginally less poor Poland. Maybe they were over-awed by the occasion, or something. I dunno. But it wasn't a good game, and neither side impressed. I hope the Republic do better tomorrow vs Sweden. |
|
Jun-13-16
 | | Domdaniel: First Korchnoi, then Kopec. Are they killing off the Ko--- players? Or just players I respect? |
|
Jun-15-16
 | | Domdaniel: I'm so disappointed by Russia. Hell, no, I'm *disgusted* by Russia, and by what it has become under Putin -- wars in Georgia and Ukraine, vile anti-gay legislation at home, the promotion of dumb nationalism, football hooligans running riot across Europe (and idiot politicians praising them for being 'real men') ... How are the mighty fallen. During the Gorbachev era of the USSR and the early years of an independent Russian state, I had a great admiration for Russia. Even before that -- in 1972, Spassky was such a deep thinker, a cultured figure, compared to Fischer (who liked comic books and rock music and already held dodgy opinions). The great USSR chess champions - Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky - deserved respect. As did 'Russians' and representatives of the USSR in other fields: writers from Dostoyevsky and Nabokov to Yevtushenko and Solzhenitsyn, artists like Tatlin, plus mathematicians, physicists, engineers, rocketeers, poets, musicians, etc. Over all else, there was the fact that Soviet Russia had an idealistic core, a heart. It might have been distorted by Stalin's monstrosities or Brezhnev's inertia, but the USSR still stood for something. Russia today does not. Apart from ugly nationalism. I am saddened and disgusted by what has happened to Russia. Not even the skill of Svidler and Kramnik can compensate. |

| Jun-16-16 | | User not found: <Domdaniel: <Mark> Just watched a poor Northern Ireland lose 1-0 to a marginally less poor Poland.> Yeah I saw it. I think Northern Ireland have done the equivalent of winning the tournament by even qualifying. I think it's their first tournament since Mexico86 when the lovely Billy Bingham was the manager, they actually had a few decent players back then too! I've got you mixed up with another Irishman before (!? Sorry X) so are you from Northern Ireland or the Republic? And don't sleep on Poland just yet Dom. They have 2 brilliant strikers, I wouldn't write them off just yet. <Maybe they were over-awed by the occasion, or something. I dunno.> I think they're just not very good. I hate to put it as harshly as that but it's true. In qualifying they played some very good games and looked like a compact little side. <But it wasn't a good game, and neither side impressed.
I hope the Republic do better tomorrow vs Sweden.> Well it wasn't to be but I wouldn't write the Republic off just yet either. They're better than Northern Ireland. In fact after watching the France Albania game last night I have to say Northern Ireland are the worst team in the tournament. Albania did a job on France for 75 minutes, they just got worn down by a better side. Albania are marginally better than Northern Ireland. I don't know whether like me you watch <all> the games (well okay, I've missed 2 so far but I won't miss another) but it's not exactly been a brilliant tournament thus far. Nothing like Braznil14, probably the best football tournament in my lifetime although if Sir Alex Ferguson said italia90 was better I won't disagree. Plus ENGLAND should have won that WC. So near but yet so far. Once the Euro's are over I'll be back to talk to you because I've been meaning to come see you for ages, but everytime I'm on this site I get sidetracked because of the Brazil nut. I wanted to speak to you about something you said earlier this year, something that I'm interested in your experiences in, I'll leave it at that for now but I'll be back mate. Good luck to both Irish teams but C'MON ENGLAND!! I 🇫🇴🇫🇴🇫🇴 |
|
| Jun-17-16 | | User not found: Just forget all my football predictions from now on, lol. Well done to the Irish last night, played really well. |
|
Jun-18-16
 | | Domdaniel: <User nf> Well, N. Irl certainly came out with, er, guns blazing in the 2nd game. And the Republic, having looked good against Sweden, came up short against a Belgian side with something to prove. Ouch. I'd actually have agreed with you about N. Ireland being weak after the 1st game, but not now. Turkey were crap v Spain -- or maybe Spain were brilliant. Or a bit of both. Funny how potential winners are already zeroing in on the usual suspects --- Spain, Italy, Germany, France as favourites, with Belgium and Portugal behind, and England as long shots. Nobody else, I reckon. BTW, Mark -- about 25 years ago I was on a ferry between Dublin and Holyhead (I think), talking to an English woman who asked me this immortal question: "Er, is Northern Ireland the top bit or the bottom bit?" I live in Cork, in the bottom of the bottom bit. A bum deal, but a great place to live. |

| Aug-15-16 | | User not found: LMAO! How do you even know who Mosdef is, Jeff?? Lol. I hope I'm not making a fool of myself for once, we all know that never usually happens, but Mosdef is a rapper! Is that who you meant, Jeff? |
