Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

perfidious: <Dom> Re Ibragimov: I recall playing at least one event with him way back when, though we never met. Seemed a quiet fellow, slight of build and unassuming. He could play a little, though--typical solid, professional GM from Eastern Europe or points east who could give anyone a tussle.

Domdaniel: Speaking of GMs from points east, I just played through a superb 90-something move win by Karpov vs Cornette. Very recent and not yet in the CG database, but it should turn up soon.

Tolya shows that he's still got it, with a neat Sovietski-type exchange sac leading to a slightly better Rook ending, converted in due course into a technical win.

Domdaniel: I made a few posts recently about the Christmas Tree Variation of the Dutch. As far as I know, the name was first used in the 1970s in CHESS (UK) Magazine, for a Bird's Opening played by Rumens with a d2/e3/f4/g3/h3 pawn structure (the tree) and pieces on g2, f3, e2 etc (decorations).

Here's a position I reached last weekend as white - the super-mega xmas tree...

Note the fairy at the top of the tree, a knight at d6. And at b2 and g2 we have crossed lasers...

Yes, of course White won quickly. But not before something strange happened...

Black - an 1800 player - has just played ...Kg7. You may notice that White now has the option of Ne8+ picking up the queen.

This was beneath my dignity. I had a winning plan, and I stuck to it. I played Kh2, then Rg1, g4 etc, and won in 5 or 6 moves.

Whaddaya mean, I missed it? Everyone knows a Nd6 is worth a Queen. In a sense.

<JessicaFischerQueen, Sep 2007>: " Are the games on yet?
I predict Jan Timman wins."

Nine years pass. Then, in Murmansk 2016, Jan Timman wins a short match vs Anatoly Karpov.

Spooky, huh?

OhioChessFan: Ne8+ meh. I'd rather resign. You did the right thing. Just don't let cg.c use it as a POTD.

OhioChessFan: Upon further musing, Black may have been trying to hasten his demise and you had to torture him through slow death instead of allowing him to gallantly tip his King over and say, "Oh, how did I miss that?".

Domdaniel: <Ohio> The sad truth is that we both missed it. I found myself looking at the board and at my scoresheet, thinking "I couldn't have missed that, could I?"

Of course I *did* have a winning plan. And I'd already decided that moves like Ne8 were pointless...

Domdaniel: Of course, I remember it now. Thanks.

I played two team games at the weekend. In the first, against a much lower-rated opponent, I expected to win. And duly lost, after pushing too hard in a level position.

In the second game, playing someone of roughly equivalent rating, I had a won position as black after 8 moves. He blundered a piece and this time I saw the right response.

Sometimes, if you're not expecting your opponent to make an error, you fail to notice when they do. And conversely, if you're arrogantly sure that the other guy will blunder any minute now, you deserve to lose.

Is it even possible to play the board, rather than the man/woman/engine/rating?

Nov-21-16  twinlark: Hi Dom

I'm sorry I was such a bitch to you a few months ago.

Having this apology as a virtual afterword to another topic on my forum seemed inadequate.

Domdaniel: <twinlark> Thanks, but no problemo.

I tend, literally, not to remember that kind of thing. I had a vague idea that I should maybe avoid your forum for a while, without really knowing why.

It makes bearing a grudge difficult, as you can imagine.

Domdaniel: Round #1 of Kilkenny Open: 14-yr-old Henry Li (2100 and rising fast) beats GM Mark Hebden in the 1st round.

I lost a tournament game to Henry a few months ago - I had an advantage as black in a French, but blundered. He said he was lucky.

Since then his rise has been dramatic. Last week in the European Club Cup he started with wins against a GM and IM, and finished just short of an IM norm.
