   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

  Annie K.: Good news. :)

I just exchanged emails with Gerry's brother. He answered me in exactly 5 minutes, so it's lucky I was certain I had the right email address...

Gerry is fine, he just needs to get around to fixing his computer, and apparently clean up some space on his phone as well.

  Domdaniel: Yo. And Da.
I seem to be alive after all.
My apologies to anyone discombobulated by my extended silence. Both laptops went kaput. Comp-folk required a stupid amount of money to fix them. So I eventually got a new one.
It's good to be back.

Good time to be back - there's a WCC going on. :)

Domdaniel: <Annie> Hi, and sorry about that. My brother D informed me that my 'excuses' - couldn't find number, cat ate my laptop, etc - were pathetic.

I haven't seen a WC game yet, but I get updates by text. Twelve games is really too short - a win now might well decide the whole match.

Domdaniel: Yesterday's Petrov was very interesting -- it demonstrated that, in a game between sufficiently strong players, even 'dull' moves and mass exchanges may still lead to tense positions.
Nov-17-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Hi Dom.. I wondered where you'd got to and if you were okay. The WCC has been pretty much as expected really, draw after draw. Glad you're okay :)
