 | | Phony Benoni: Aha! I knew I'd seen it somewhere. It's a study by Karl Behting: http://chessprogramming.wikispaces....
In case you're wondering, I found this by googling the FEN. |
|
Dec-07-10
 | | Fusilli: <PB> Thanks for the research! I was indeed wondering how you found it... for a moment I thought the secret lodge of catalogers knew some secret formula to search for complicated stuff on the web. Hey, that Behting guy was born exactly a century before my wife! Oops, I revealed her age! |

 | | Fusilli: BTW, I saw now that if 1...Kg5 2.Nf3+! draws, and I was wondering what happens if 1...h3. The computer does evaluate this one correctly:
2.Ng3+ Kg5 3.Ne2 Kf5 4.Nf3 Ke4 5.Neg1 (0.00):

 | | Fusilli: Hey, the following website tells you who was born the same day as you (or any day you input, for that matter): http://www.trueknowledge.com/q/who_... I don't know any of those folks born the same day as I, although I suspect <albertan> must know who that <Andy Walker> is. |

Dec-10-10 | | Albertan: <Hi <Wayne>, I had seen that one long> <ago and had forgotten about it. True> <about 30...Bc6, but I suspect Short> <was exhausted by then. A difficult >
<game to play with the Black pieces.> Any game against Kasparov would be difficult. It is bad enough he had all that talent, however he also liked to use psychology staring right into his opponent's eyes. Yikes! |
|
Dec-10-10
 | | Fusilli: <staring right into his opponent's eyes.> ... which I find rude. Tal used to do the same thing, and I remember reading Alburt saying that once he looked up and Tal was staring at him, and he (Alburt) smiled at him, and Tal then was mildly startled, like being suddenly awaken from a dream. I don't think Tal meant any harm, but I am not sure about Kasparov. You can tell (or speculate) a lot from people's facial expressions. As we grow up and age, our face muscles end up settling in a way that reflects which muscles we use and how, and somehow this ends up giving each of us our distinctive expressions. My wife says that in most pictures Ivanchuk looks earnest and Van Wely looks alert and potentially feisty, but he also looks like he is actually a nice guy. On the other hand, some very famous player tends to look like a sociopath. Nothing I am aware of makes me think of him as a potential bad guy, but his facial expression does suggest aggressiveness and cold-blooded focus. I'm refraining from saying who because he has way too many fans on cg.com and I don't want to start a row. Not that many folks read my forum, though... |
|
Dec-10-10 | | dakgootje: I agree. They should've cast Anand in a James Bond-film as cold-hearted killer. |
|
Dec-12-10
 | | Fusilli: <dak> lol! Anand looks like a total softie! |
|
Dec-12-10 | | dakgootje: No that is a cultural thing. He is similar to Super-Star Rajinikanth; looks can be deceiving! |
|
Dec-12-10
 | | Open Defence: <dakkie> you are aware of Super Star Rajanikanth! im impressed!!! |
|
Dec-12-10 | | dakgootje: Not a big fan though - I am afraid :P
But sure, I try to read and remember about everything as much as possible :) |

Dec-13-10 | | Albertan: <Dec-10-10 Premium Chessgames> <Member Fusilli:> <staring right into his opponent's> <eyes.> <... which I find rude. Tal used to>
<do the same thing, and I remember> Yes he did and I find it rude as well. There were several people I used to play who did this. I just didn't look into their eyes or even at them the whole game, I just looked at the board. GM Gligoric once said "I play the board not the person" or something like that. <reading Alburt saying that once he> <looked up and Tal was staring at> <him, and he (Alburt) smiled at him,> <and Tal then was mildly startled,> <like being suddenly awaken from a> <dream.> LOL, that must have been quite the thing to see.I would love to see a photo of that! LOL <I don't think Tal meant any harm,>
<but I am not sure about Kasparov.> I am not sure about Tal, some said his stare was hypnotic. As you recall Pal Benko at one point in his career wore sun glasses when he played Tal. Kasparov definitely did it to upset his opponent. Karpov and Kasparov had some very deep stares at each other which I have seen photos of (I believe these photos are in Seirawan's book, "5 Crowns" concerning one of the Kasparov-Karpov WC matches). Kasparov was playing American GM Tal Shaked and he played a theoretical novelty in a game against Shaked. The opening was the Grunfeld Defense, with Kasparov playing black I believe, and after the game Kasparov put down Shaked saying he shouldn't have wasted the TN against someone of Shaked's ability!! He also stated he would have liked to have seen Karpov's face if he had instead played this TN against Karpov instead of Shaked. I believe this is the game against Shaked: Shaked vs Kasparov, 1997 |

<read my forum, though...> I understand and I believe I know which player you are talking about. I am not afraid to speak my mind on this website. Mariano, if you really want to see the nature of professional chess players today, you might get a twitter account. I subscribed to GM Nakamura's twitter messages for a very short time... a very very short time! Wow! |
|
Dec-13-10
 | | Fusilli: <Albertan> I had never heard about the Shaked-Kasparov anecdote. No question about Kasparov being a jerk all around. Oh, I'm not afraid of speaking my mind. What happens is that my forum is kept pretty "clean": chess, friendly posts and good humor, and I don't want anyone to contaminate it arguing that I am attaking a GM for no reason. I don't think I'll subscribe to any GM twitter... :-) I crashed my car yesterday. It snowed 5 inches in Nashville, pretty unusual. Road plowing is substandard here, and because it snowed and stopped and snowed again, there is a layer of ice under the snow. I had not driven in snow since my Philadelphia days (8 winters ago). The street I was on was uphill and after an intersection it became downhill and I guess I wasn't alert enough. Thankfully, I crashed into a parked pick up truck and no one was hurt (I was by myself). It wasn't a huge crash, the air bags didn't deploy, but the front end of my car is severely messed up. We'll see what the shop says today (if they get to look at it today--there were many wrecks in Nashville yesterday). GEICO has been fabulous, by the way. |
|
Dec-14-10 | | Albertan: Yikes those are tricky driving conditions. I imagine you don't have winter snow tires. My sister lives outside of Toronto and she got winter tires on her car this year. Strangely, she never had them on her car when she drove it here! Go figure! Well we always have problems here with the snow cleaning budget.Strange how city council can find money for two hockey arenas which are hardly used by anyone yet they can't find money for snow removal! Sometimes they actually ban driving on certain streets in our city if the snow is too deep, so they can clean them somewhat efficiently, they call that situation "A snow route emergency" and we can't park our cars in certain places or if we do our car gets towed and we get fined! <driven in snow since my> <Philadelphia <days (8 winters ago).> I guess that will be an adjustment for you, and for everyone there. In our city drivers should know better, yet every year, some do not adjust to the first snow and ice of the year, and for sure they end up causing accidents. <The street I was on was uphilland> <after an intersection it became> <downhill and I guess I wasn't alert> <enough. Thankfully, I crashed into> Well, that sounds like a very difficult driving situation, which even "seasoned" drivers would have trouble with. I have found since I got a front-wheel drive, that I haven't done as much of that sliding once I hit "black ice! Thank goodness! We used to be able to have metal studs on our tires, which helped when you hit ice, however they damaged the roads too serverely so the Government here banned their use. Many people here have four wheeel drives. They think that makes a difference in winter driving. However, the other day I saw a four-wheel drive had crashed off the road...some people end up putting too much faith in their four-wheel drive vehicle! <a parked pick up truck and no one > <was hurt (I <was by myself). It> I am glad you were not hurt Mariano, believe me if you get hurt in a car accident, your body is never the same afterwords. <wasn't a huge crash, the air bags> <didn't deploy, but the front end of> <my car is severely messed up. We'll> That is too bad, front end damage usually is a very expensive repair proposition, due to the sophistication of the parts etc involved in that part of the car. <see what the shop says today > <(if they get to <look at it> <today--there were many wrecks in> <Nashville yesterday). GEICO has been> <fabulous, by the way.> I hope that the car isn't too badly damaged and that you are not inconvenienced too badly. You are lucky about GEICO, it took me 18 years to get something from the insurance companies up here for the injuries their insured drivers caused me. It is interesting to read a weather forecast from Nashville online just a minute ago. The Nashville Weather Office labels the temperature of 7 degrees for a low as "very cold"! Up here 7 degrees for a winter day would be a very "balmy" night! :) Well I hope you get good news about your car and the weather changes for the better there soon. Take care Mariano! Talk with you again soon. |

Well,Mariano, if you think Kasparov is arrogant, all I can say is you haven't seen what arrogance is until you read some tweets from this GM I am talking about! LOL <I crashed my car yesterday. It > Oh no! I hope you weren't hurt! I have been in five crashes caused by others. It sure sends a shock through your system when that happens. I hope you have gotten all your marking done so you can relax. <snowed 5 inches in Nashville,> <pretty unusual.> Yes, I have seen some of the weather reports and video from Tennessee, strange weather patterns. I am sorry they are happening to you there. I have had my fill of winter weather! We once had 30 days in a row below zero degrees here in the late 60's! The weather hasn't been bad here yet, however we are expecting some cold temperatures here soon. Thanks to a Siberian weather front! Strange the Russians blame the weather on the Americans (Alaska), the Canadian's blame it on the Russians (Siberians) and the Americans,(at least my relatives there blame it on us Canadians! ) LOL So much for Global warming eh? Did you hear part of the Earth's atmosphere collapsed this summer? Wow! what is going on with out weather patterns and atmospheric conditions? <Road plowing is substandard here,> <and because it snowed and stopped> < and snowed again, there is a layer> <of ice under the snow.I had not> |

Dec-16-10 | | Albertan: Mariano, check out this Nimzo-Indian game. The CG database does not evaluate this game as a Nimzo-Indian Defense, however Chessbase Megadatabase 2010 does, as does Inside Chess Magazine in the May 15,1993 edition of their magazine: J Benjamin vs Blatny, 1995 |

< now... after getting some <administrative work finished up and a> <little Xmas break.> Congratulations Mariano,I'm glad you are finished your marking and now you can relax and enjoy the holiday break! We had a big snow storm the other day, so big that they had to call in huge industrial sized front-end loaders to clean our duplex complex here. I guess the weather is bad in many places...so much for global warming! Seasons Greetings to you and your family! |
|
Dec-17-10
 | | Fusilli: <Wayne> Very interesting, that Nimzo game. It reminds me of those Najdorf-Reshevsky games (Benjamin being Najdorf-like and Blatny Reshevsky-like). Stay warm! |
|
Dec-17-10
 | | Fusilli: <H> Well, since it's "White to play and move", anything goes, so I'll go with 1.Kh1! lol... wait, let me think about it. |
|
Dec-17-10
 | | Fusilli: <H> I don't like the placement of White's Queen, the N in d2, and the R in e1, but White is Kramnik, who knows where to put his pieces, so I am just a fool. White needs to get the Queen's bishop out, but instead of 1.Nb1 or 1.Nf1 I think I'd go for the plan 1.Qd3, 2.Nb3, 3.Bf4. But I am worried about 1...Nb6 2.Nb3 Rc8. So, if 1...Nb6 I think I'd go for 2.b3. Now I'll go check the game and verify how much I suck. |
|
Dec-17-10
 | | Fusilli: <H> I checked. Well, now that's wild (!) I did look at that move... and discarded it after three seconds. |
|
Dec-17-10 | | hms123: <M> You might remember that we discussed that sort of pawn break at my place the other day. GMs play it and we don't. Maybe we will in the future. What's the car situation? |
