Mariano Sana, Argentinian by birth, in the US since 1995. Naturalized US citizen. I hold a PhD in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania, and I am an associate professor of Sociology at Vanderbilt University: https://as.vanderbilt.edu/sociology.... Previously, I was at Louisiana State University (2003-2009).

My published academic work can be seen here: https://vanderbilt.academia.edu/Mar.... My review of Gary Alan Fine's "Players and Pawns" is here: https://www.academia.edu/69647923/P....

My avatar comes from a cartoon of mine drawn by a friend. My username, besides the pasta, is my late cat's name (he died in March 2021, age 19), inspired by this cartoon: https://condenaststore.com/featured....

My first tournament was at age 12 in 1979. I finished 8th in the Argentine junior championship in 1985. So, I was good enough, but not great. (That same evaluation might still be apt today, on a good day.) Unfortunately, no game scores survived from those years. I started to play again after grad school. I play between 0 and 4 tournaments per year.

I won the Louisiana State Championship in 2007. I lost the first game and then won six in a row. This was my last round win, where I got lucky after playing the opening pretty terribly: J Rousselle vs M Sana, 2007.

I also won the under 2200 section of the US Open in 2014. Again, Swiss gambit. Lost the first one, then won five in a row, lost game 7 (M Sana vs J Sheng, 2014, a rather atypical game), and won games 8 and 9. My last round win was featured as a Tuesday puzzle: K Gulamali vs M Sana, 2014. (Try it! Black to play at move 29. But you can also do black to play at move 22 as a principled-move puzzle.)

I'd say that I am essentially a good but inconsistent player. My playing style is a mix of strategic and tactical. I'm usually very willing to sac a pawn or allow positional weaknesses in exchange for active piece play. For years I hovered around 2200, down to mid 2100s a few years ago after a disaster and a 50-point loss at the 2019 World Open. (Aging and MS fatigue had much to do with that.) On good days, I have had nice wins: T Bartell vs M Sana, 2009, R Burnett vs M Sana, 2012, M Sana vs C Blocker, 2014, M Sana vs R Burnett, 2015. But on a bad day, I can play horribly and lose against whoever is sitting in front of me.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2011, but it didn't cause me trouble until 2018/9. I have a weak right leg (I often use a cane now) and I fatigue easily. Medication, well-timed naps, and exercise help.

I play blitz games on chess.com under the username RealFusilli.

My participation on this website goes through ebbs and flows, and the majority of my posts are about chess. I often post on my own forum just to keep records for myself. Everyone is welcome to visit and share! (But please don't post about politics here.)

Higuita was nutty, and took some chances. But I¡ll defend him on that play against Cameroon. He had passed the ball but that player passed it back to him.

In the second half Messi set up a teammate for the simplest goal, 1-on-1 vs. the goalkeeper, but he missed the goal entirely.

Dec-03-22  areknames: <Higuita was nutty, and took some chances. But I¡ll defend him on that play against Cameroon.> Eh, mine was a jab at Ryan rather than Higuita who was really talented and massively entertaining. Ryan is the 3rd choice gk at FC Copenhagen (no harm in that) yet he thinks he can outdribble Argentinian strikers?? GET RID of the effin' ball already!
Dec-03-22  optimal play: <Fusilli> Congratulations to Argentina.

They were clearly the better team and deserved to win.

I think you're a real chance to win this world cup.

<areknames: LOL, so who does Aussie gk Ryan think he is? Maybe Rene' Higuita, the flamboyant Colombian (remember him?) who was always trying to dribble himself out of trouble at Italia '90 until he was punished by Roger Milla?>

IKR!

What a time to make such a huge blunder!

<What a game, it felt like Argentina was safe and in control the whole game but then all of a sudden Australia scores by accident and eventually get their ONLY chance of the game at the last second which Kuol should have converted and sent the game to extra time.>

It turned out to be closer than I expected.

Great goal by Messi. Their second was a gift by our stupid goal keeper, but then our late goal was somewhat lucky.

In the end it was pretty exciting.

<moronovich: A fine effort against the mighty argentinian team <optimal play>. You can check out with your head held high !>

Thanks Moro. They did pretty well considering our expectations for this team was rather low.

Dec-04-22  technical draw: Great game between Argentina and Australia. Real exciting and tense the last minutes. I thought for sure Australia would drop that last minute goal and force overtime. Australia played a good WC but Argentina was one of the favorites.

Fusilli: <OP> Thanks! Your team was tough!

What a game! Argentina won deservedly, but with its usual dose of suffering. Messi was on. Man, really on.

The game had a great goal and then an odd lucky goal for each. It also had two amazing non-goals. In one of them, Baccus left four or five Argentines behind until Lisandro Martinez intercepted the shot. In the other one, Messi left the entire Australian defense behind (four men at that moment) to pass it to Lautaro Martinez who blew it.

And then the two goalkeepers did heroic things in the last 10 minutes.

My wife and I went out to celebrate with dinner at a restaurant we had not tried before. It's called Etc, and if you ever make it to Nashville, I thoroughly recommended it. Delicious and balanced meal, absolutely incredible dessert, and reasonably priced.

Vamos Argentina!

A well deserved win and what a great way to celebrate with your wife !

Looking forward to the meeting with the dutch team.

Dec-04-22  technical draw: I thought Poland was going to get the first goal. But France surprises with a last minute goal. France 1 Poland 0.

(I don't have a national team to root for so I usually pick Brazil or Argentina. Argentina has passed into the final 8 so let's see later today if Brazil does the same.)

Dec-04-22  technical draw: Correction: Brazil plays South Korea tomorrow. Next match is England/Senegal.

Fusilli: France was expected to beat Poland with no problem. I only had the game in the background, but I am pretty confident that France, indeed, beat Poland with no problem. For once, something goes exactly as expected!

I don't think the striker in a penalty kick should be allowed to do what Lewandowski did. Unfair to the goalie. If the goalie believes the feint, he steps out of line. And if he doesn't, he won't have time to react to the real shot.

Dec-04-22  areknames: <I don't think the striker in a penalty kick should be allowed to do what Lewandowski did. Unfair to the goalie>

I agree, he actually stops for long enough in the middle of it which is against the rules. Apart from that it looks extremely silly, reminded me of Monty Python's "Ministry of Silly Walks". Plus that first one was the weakest, most pathetic penalty I've ever seen. What a clown, I'm glad they got knocked out comprehensively.

saffuna: The penalty taker already has a huge advantage the goalkeeper, so he should have to take his kick in one continuous run-up.

However, if the goalkeeper decides just to stand in the center, the kicker looks foolish and has little leverage for a powerful shot. Same when the kicker takes the shot straight up the middle.

Fusilli: Penalty kicks for Japan v Croatia!

I like penalty kicks... when I don't have to suffer through them 😁

Dec-05-22  technical draw: If the penalty kicks start off 1-0 it's really hard to catch up. First you have to make sure you don't miss plus you have to hope that the other team misses. Having the early lead is a great advantage. Congrats to Croatia.

saffuna: <Having the early lead is a great advantage.>

Well, yeah. If you make yours and stop the other team's, that's an advantage.

Dec-05-22  technical draw: <Well, yeah. If you make yours and stop the other team's, that's an advantage>

No, its an advantage before the other team shoots. That's the psychological advantage.

Fusilli: I could only start watching Brazil toward the end of the first half, when they were 4-0. Didn't get to see any Brazilian goal live. Then they didn't score again. I feel cheated! (Although the Korean goal was nice.)

saffuna: <No, its an advantage before the other team shoots. That's the psychological advantage.>

And a huge disadvantage if the first shot is blocked.

Dec-06-22  optimal play: <technical draw: ... I don't have a national team to root for so I usually pick Brazil or Argentina.>

You're American, aren't you? I presume you would have supported the USA until they got knocked out.

<Fusilli: ... I don't think the striker in a penalty kick should be allowed to do what Lewandowski did. Unfair to the goalie. If the goalie believes the feint, he steps out of line. And if he doesn't, he won't have time to react to the real shot.>

Agree. I notice a Brazilian did the same against Korea. If the striker stops or hesitates, the goalie should be allowed to come off the line.

<I like penalty kicks..>

Me too.

They're sometimes the most exciting part of the game.

<td: <Well, yeah. If you make yours and stop the other team's, that's an advantage> No, its an advantage before the other team shoots. That's the psychological advantage.>

Well, the team that shoots first is under pressure to make sure that first goal goes in, otherwise they're suddenly at a disadvantage.

<saffuna: <No, its an advantage before the other team shoots. That's the psychological advantage.> And a huge disadvantage if the first shot is blocked.>

Yeah, we just saw an example of that with Japan & Croatia.

Dec-06-22  technical draw: Let me clear up the "advantage" statement. Mathematically in top level soccer the team shooting first has won 54% of the time. Now that might not translate into an advantage per se because other parameters are involved such as the different skills of the shooters and the goalkeepers. This is reduced by the fact that the teams already played 120 minutes of equal score so we can surmise that the shooters and goalkeepers are of equal skill. That just leaves the "first to shoot" parameter as a variable.

So if the first to shoot has a record of 54% to 46% then we can say that there is a first kick advantage however slight.

Now one can argue that the best goalkeepers and shooters will always have the advantage but that parameter is hard to assess. Therefore I will take the only clear advantage as true and that is the first to shoot advantage.

Dec-06-22  optimal play: <TD> 54-46 sounds excessively high.

Other stats put first kick advantage at only 51.48% to 48.52%

https://instatsport.com/football

Dec-06-22  technical draw: <optimal play> I found this:

<In 2018, Dr Ignacio Palacio-Huerta of the London School of Economics analysed 1,000 penalties taken at previous World Cup and European Championships.

From this, he concluded that teams who take the first penalty win 60 per cent of shootouts, compared to 40 per cent won by teams who go second from the spot.>

Another thing is that the captain who wins the toss chooses to shoot first 56% of the time. So maybe he knows something.

Dec-06-22  technical draw: <op><You're American, aren't you? I presume you would have supported the USA until they got knocked out.>. Yes I am an American but when I first started getting interested in soccer the USA was not a contender. So I picked Brazil first then Argentina and Spain. The US is improving so maybe I'll make another switch. As you can see I'm not a very faithful sports fan!
Dec-06-22  optimal play: <technical draw> There seem to be some wildly disparate stats pertaining to this matter, but they all agree on one thing; shooting first is an advantage, even if it's just 51½-48½

Perhaps it's because in most cases the striker scores, so in most cases the team shooting first will go up 1-0 putting pressure on the team shooting second.

It would be interesting to know the stats on which team won the penalty shootout if the team shooting first missed their first goal.

<So I picked Brazil first then Argentina and Spain.>

Stick with them, the USA has as much chance of winning the World Cup as Australia.
