 | | OhioChessFan: Rxg2+ followed by Rc2+ seemed right but Nxf3+ is just as powerful. |

 | | Fusilli: <OCF> Yes. I went with Nxf3+. |

 | | Fusilli: Blitz on chess.com. I am black.
Black to play. It's not a tactical shot, but a strategic decision. click for larger viewI played this imbalanced position before (in terms of pawns on each flank), which results from the Scotch game. This is a crucial point in the game. I realize that I need to mobilize my queenside pawn majority, because white is going to place a superknight on d3 and his kingside pawn majority can be mobilized quickly. I have problems: My knight looks ideally placed, but it needs to move to allow ...c5. My kingside pawns will probably be harassed. I concluded, correctly, that I had to harass whites's queenside pawns or I'll get stuck in a passive situation, defending my kingside pawns. But how? If 22...Qb5 23.Nd3 (which is where that knight wants to be anyway) and there's nothing. If 22...Qa5 23.Nd3 Qd2 24.Qxg7 Qxc2 25.Qxh7 defends the knight, which is ideally placed, and I will lose the pawn race. Another option is 22...g5, but in previous games I learned to be cautious about advancing the pawns on the side where I am in the minority. (The computer gives +0.39, but again the computer plays both sides flawlessly, but after the very committal g5, the pressure is on me to get my moves right.) I played 22...Qe5, which looks normal, and then 23.Nd3 Qe7 (best move). The computer says +0.81, but that's a deceiving computer evaluation. Black's position is more difficult to play than white's, and I am fully on the defensive. (I managed to draw. My opponent rushed to exchange queens, which was not a good decision, since his queen was much better than mine.) The computer's suggestion as best move leads to +0.15, which is the best black can get, BUT it gives black a more dynamic position instead of a passive one like what I chose. And it achieves the queenside pawn mobilization that I need. Do you see it?
(I know this is a long post, and lately, only <OCF> has been stopping by, so I will post the solution in a couple of days. My forum is for everyone, but it is also a chess journal for myself!) |

 | | Check It Out: I kept looking at 22...e3 but it doesn't seem to work. I considered 22...Ne5 23.Qxg7 Qe4 as an active line, but white has a few options (24.Kf1, 24.Nf3) and I'm not sure where the evaluation lands at that point. |

24.Kf1 Nc4 looks pretty good. |

24.Qf8+ Ka7 25.Qc5+ looks dangerous. |

 | | Fusilli: <Check it out> Good tries, thanks for checking in! It's 22...Qa2!
So hard to see! The most reasonable continuation is 23.Qxg7 Qxb2 24.Qxh7 Qxa3 and now black has an a-passer. The computer gives more or less equal chances. In other lines, black ends up without any passer any time soon, and is forced into a defensive endgame. I didn't see 22...Qa2 at all. Even in reviewing the game, trying to find a better move, I still didn't see it. |

 | | Check It Out: <Fusilli> aha. My eye looked at Qa2 for a split second as an option but discarded it, probably because it's so decentral. Thanks as always for the chess! |

| Oct-03-24 | | areknames: Haven't popped in here for ages but it feels good to do that now. Loved <OCF>'s position that could have been the highlight of his career. Took me a little while to see the devastating ..Qe5!
Hope you're doing well <Fusilli>, unfortunately my own health has been in the toilet and I was incredibly close to death a few months ago but I bounced back and am still soldiering on. All the best to everyone here. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I gave up on your position after I couldn't get Ne5 to work. So sorry to hear <arek>. I'm in my 4th bout of Covid and feeling sorry for myself but nothing so serious as you faced |

 | | Fusilli: <arek> I'm glad you dodged the bullet, my friend. I hope you find beauty, peace, purpose, and enjoyment in your life, whatever you current health status is. <OCF> Hang in there! My wife just went through her fourth as well. I got it only once, but my one time was worse than her four times combined. Had I not taken Paxlovid right away, I would have ended up in hospital. I've been thinking about mortality a lot, lately, after my father-in-law passed away in July. I also lost one of my closest friends from my coming-of-age years (one of those friends for life, 3 days younger than me) and a cousin recently. My father-in-law, who survived for over 10 years after a diagnosis of leukemia, said toward the end that he wanted to die having a sense of readiness. I think he did reach that point. It feels like a blessing. My management of MS is working fine. My loss of strength on some muscles in my right leg (and foot) is apparently permanent, so I limp and walk slow and a bit wobbly, often with the aid of a cane. On the other hand, I do strength workouts and swim regularly, so I am quite fit, weak leg notwithstanding. You know how it is. Having a chronic condition, or even simple aging, comes with an undercurrent of grief for what you have lost. Sometimes that bubbles to the surface, and that's when we need support and remember to be grateful for all our blessings. I got one of those bouts of sudden sadness earlier this week. So I wrote to two friends who I have not seen in years, who never saw me walk "funny," asking them to remind me of good times when I could walk normally. They responded so warmly, it was moving. OK, I'm going to post a more standard puzzle now, from a blitz I just played during a work break. |

| Oct-04-24 | | areknames: <Fusilli> Thank you so much for your kind words, I am doing relatively well now. I do not fear death but I'm only 57 and it would be nice to carry on a little longer, I won't bore you with details but the fact that I went downhill so quickly and fairly unexpectedly was a major shock to me. The Covid thing is interesting, my wife had 3 jabs but still caught it 3 times and I don't think she ever fully recovered from the last one, her doctor reckons she has long Covid. I had no jabs, got it once about 2 years ago, was very sick for about 5 hours, had a lingering cough for a fortnight and was fine after that. All the best mate and may God bless you. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I heard something happened in Nashville today.... |
|
Oct-06-24
 | | Fusilli: <OCF> Yup. I am betting the number of folks dressed in Vanderbilt swagger when I go in tomorrow will be three times the usual one. FWIW, I plan to wear my own! But because I am a stylish professor, my choice will be black shirt with gold tie. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Somehow you need to work the final score into an answer on your next exam. The students will love you. |

| Oct-07-24 | | areknames: I am not sure I follow any of this but a <black shirt with gold tie> sounds like a darn good look! |

 | | Fusilli: <areknames> I agree! The event we are talking about is this:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor... I think that article summarizes the significance of it correctly. I work at Vanderbilt University, whose colors are black and gold. |

| Nov-09-24 | | Teyss: Hi Fusilli,
Thanks for a breathe of fresh air amidst the swamp vapours of Rogoff. Nice puzzle. Only spotted it because I knew there was a solution and all moves are forced. Wednesday-Thursday level (starting on Friday I generally fail). Hope you're doing fine. |

 | | keypusher: <fusilli> thanks for posting this. Another one I'd never see in a game, but when I finally figure it out in a puzzle I wonder why it took me so long. <areknames> Wow, I had no idea. Hope you stay better. |
