I live in Stredokluky (a village near Prague, Czech republic). I play both practical and correspondence chess. My rating in practical chess (Czech national ELO) oscillates somewhere between 2010 and 2060, in correspondence chess I have rating 2155 (my best was 2220 in the middle of 90's). I have no special favorite player but I like to view good games of old masters (Tarrasch, Schlechter, Chigorin etc.)

   Jan-09-26 J Cervenka vs P Kopta, 2026

Honza Cervenka: If 57...Ke4, then 58.Ke1! f3 59.Bg3 f2+ 60.Bxf2 exf2+ 61.Kxf2 +-

   Jan-07-26 Short vs Kramnik, 1996

Honza Cervenka: It looks like white forgot to insert 45.Bxg7+ with idea 45...Kh7 46.Qf4 +-. Or did he miss that after 46.Qh6+ black has 46...Qh7? Anyway, instead of 42...Bh6(?) black should have played 42...Qf5 43.Rh2 Bf4 with decisive attack. 41...Bxe3 was also inaccurate for eventual ...

Jan-06-26 Kramnik vs Short, 1995 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: Ugly 20...Bc8 was the only chance to avoid quick disaster, though white's advantage would be still great and probably decisive anyway.

   Jan-06-26 Capablanca vs Lasker, 1924

Honza Cervenka: <which begs the question if Honza was here on the 30th June why did he not wish me a happy birthday?> Mea culpa!

   Jan-06-26 Smyslov vs G Ilivitsky, 1952

Honza Cervenka: Instead of 14...Nd4 it was correct to play 14...gxf5. Also 15...gxf5 would have been a lesser evil. 16...Bxh6 was another mistake but the position of black was then bad anyway.

   Jan-06-26 T Luther vs O Touzane, 1990

Honza Cervenka: This is quite strange coincidence. But first 10 moves are just a standard opening line, and most of moves after black's three consecutive mistakes (14...Nd4, 15...Bxe4 and 16...Bxh6) are more or less forced or at least fairly obvious.

   Jan-05-26 A Pomar vs Hort, 1965

Honza Cervenka: Instead of 15.Nf6+ white should have played 15.Qxf7+ Kxf7 16.Ng5+ Kg8 17.Nxh3 exd4 18.Nxd4 Nxd4 19.exd4 Bxd4 20.Rb1 with roughly equal game.

   Jan-02-26 N Theodorou vs L Dominguez Perez, 2025 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 37.Rb7! was a lovely shot. But black's position was already precarious anyway. For example, 36...f6 37.Qg3 Rc6 38.h6 Qe7 39.Nxe6 +-, or 36...Nf5 37.Bxf5 exf5 38.h6 f6 39.Qg3 Rb8 40.Nd7!! +-

   Jan-02-26 A Elo vs Fischer, 1957

Honza Cervenka: 42.c4 was absolutely incomprehensible move giving black practical chance to play for win. 46.Kg3 was decisive mistake but it was just a logical consequence of the bad decision made four moves earlier.

   Jan-02-26 Goutham Krishna H vs A Tabatabaei, 2025 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 30...Bxc4 was necessary. Black was badly spanked for his too passive approach to this game.

Honza Cervenka: <hms123> <I have cast about 20 votes so far and will continue through the week.>

Thanks a lot!

<How many cakes do you get this time?>

I don't know. My wife has not made any promise yet. This time she probably takes the win for granted. But I guess that if our opponents would start to haunt us I would expect more than cake...:-D

Domdaniel: Babies with a 'hardcore constituency', yet. Do they go round kissing politicians?

Hlas-o-vat An-et-a!

Apr-04-10  dakgootje: I have to admit to having cast a sympathy-hlasovat for... Karel I think, anyway, the one in last place. Then again, it was after almost a dozen Aneta-hlasovats so the damage should be oversee-able ;D

jessicafischerqueen: I am voting to re-elect ANETA again- but I dropped by to thank you for the many, many analytic posts you have made on the <Steinitz> games pages.

I am currently making a biographical film on him, and your annotations in particular are helping me understand better the nature, and magnitude, of his achievement.

  Honza Cervenka: ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!

Karel Tuma's supporters seem to muster. Number of votes for him jumped in last few hours quite significantly from less than 20 to actual 68. Some 15 votes for him arrived in less than last 30 minutes. So vote early, vote often! The true race begins now!

Apr-06-10  dakgootje: Both Karel and Viktorie are about to break the century mark -- if they continue this pace they might get within 600 votes difference!

Domdaniel: <600 votes difference!> The absolute numbers aren't as important as the voting rate and the difference ratio. Aneta was a whole order of magnitude ahead yesterday, with a lead close to 10:1. Now it's more like 7:1.

This means they're gaining and have plenty of time to catch up. We must accelerate again, spread the word - and no more sympathy-hlasovat for the others, please.

Honza -- get some rest. Stop worrying. It's cool, Jack. My regards to Aneta and her heroic mother. We're going to win this.

Apr-07-10  amadeus: Yep. Tuma is trying a late surge...
Apr-07-10  whatthefat: I can't resist any longer... It's not a Tuma!
Apr-07-10  whiteshark: 1,000 passed! :D Advantage ratio still 5:1 (or 800 votes difference) and only 36 hours to go.
Apr-07-10  Travis Bickle: Hello Honza, I just made my next vote and got your babies number up to an even 1000 votes! ; ) P.S. My grandparents on my fathers side came from then Czechoslovakia in the early 1920's. They were from Bratislava. So I had to help a former fellow countrymen! ; P

  Sneaky: Honza,

<On Monday of last week I have become proud father of (the second) daughter named Aneta.>

I'm so sorry that I have been away for a few weeks and missed this news. You must be so proud you are losing buttons from your shirt!

Is the voting over? I see little Stredokluky topping the charts!

Anyhow I don't know what else to say but congratulations! By the way, does she have an Elo rating yet? :)

  Honza Cervenka: <Sneaky> <Is the voting over?>

This is the second round and it will continue till this Friday, 12.00 CET. The first round, which was (at least to this point) by far more dramatic contest due to two opponents with well organized and dedicated supporters, was held two weeks ago and (with great assistance of fellow chessgames.com's kibitzers) we have won. This time it seems to be easy race for us as our opponents slept away the start (undoubtedly the Easter holiday was the key factor here) allowing us to take sole lead from the beginning with gradually increasing distance. But as voting contests for the baby of month where the winner had more than 5 thousand votes were no exception in the past I see our lead not 100% safe yet. If we win this time, we would qualify into the great final poll where the baby of year 2010 will be elected from winners of month contests via internet as well as by mail votes from the readers of the newspaper "Kladensky denik". The final voting will run sometime in January or February 2011 and so there is plenty of time to prepare the campaign...:-D

Domdaniel: Aneta has the advantage of being the youngest -- her supporters just go from one campaign to the next.

But the other parents have 4-5-week old babies to cope with, and a poll is not their priority.

I suspect the end-of-year contest will be different, with everyone highly motivated again.

Meanwhile, I continue to hlasovat. Aneta's Elo rating of 1100 approx is promising.

Apr-08-10  hms123: <Honza> <Dom> I just hlasovat-ed vote number 1100!
Apr-08-10  dakgootje: that newspaper-baby-vote-site actually had a chess-inspired cartoon a few weeks ago! http://kladensky.denik.cz/vtip_deni... I am sure it is hilarious ;)

Honza Cervenka: <Domdaniel><Aneta has the advantage of being the youngest -- her supporters just go from one campaign to the next.>

Well, in fact Viktorie Spilkova is one day younger than Aneta and she won the poll, which was running next week after that contest won by our girl. But in general you are right. The interval between the voting for the baby of the week and the poll of baby of the month is not much helpful for keeping supporters in readiness for the next round of voting. But this poll was very special due to Easter which many people here spent as prolonged weekend out of offices and even homes. I guess it was the case with Tuma's family, which evidently started to vote and maybe organize some support only on Monday evening.

Honza Cervenka: <dakgootje> The text of the cartoon says: "This time we'll win. We have reinforcement from abroad..."

Of course, it is necessary to know that Czech word for the chess Rook, i.e. "vìž" means also "the tower".

Domdaniel: Or maybe Aneta's fast leap into the lead discouraged the others. This phenomenon is known from other elections, and is a reason some countries don't permit opinion polls in the days before a general election.

But it looks like Aneta will win. For the yearly final, we'll pull in votes from *everywhere*. I'll even call in some non-chess favours, if such things still exist ...

Honza -- let us know when she says "vìž" for the first time ... or anything in Czech, mate.
