I live in Stredokluky (a village near Prague, Czech republic). I play both practical and correspondence chess. My rating in practical chess (Czech national ELO) oscillates somewhere between 2010 and 2060, in correspondence chess I have rating 2155 (my best was 2220 in the middle of 90's). I have no special favorite player but I like to view good games of old masters (Tarrasch, Schlechter, Chigorin etc.)

   Jan-07-26 Short vs Kramnik, 1996

Honza Cervenka: It looks like white forgot to insert 45.Bxg7+ with idea 45...Kh7 46.Qf4 +-. Or did he miss that after 46.Qh6+ black has 46...Qh7? Anyway, instead of 42...Bh6(?) black should have played 42...Qf5 43.Rh2 Bf4 with decisive attack. 41...Bxe3 was also inaccurate for eventual ...

Jan-06-26 Kramnik vs Short, 1995 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: Ugly 20...Bc8 was the only chance to avoid quick disaster, though white's advantage would be still great and probably decisive anyway.

   Jan-06-26 Capablanca vs Lasker, 1924

Honza Cervenka: <which begs the question if Honza was here on the 30th June why did he not wish me a happy birthday?> Mea culpa!

   Jan-06-26 Smyslov vs G Ilivitsky, 1952

Honza Cervenka: Instead of 14...Nd4 it was correct to play 14...gxf5. Also 15...gxf5 would have been a lesser evil. 16...Bxh6 was another mistake but the position of black was then bad anyway.

   Jan-06-26 T Luther vs O Touzane, 1990

Honza Cervenka: This is quite strange coincidence. But first 10 moves are just a standard opening line, and most of moves after black's three consecutive mistakes (14...Nd4, 15...Bxe4 and 16...Bxh6) are more or less forced or at least fairly obvious.

   Jan-05-26 A Pomar vs Hort, 1965

Honza Cervenka: Instead of 15.Nf6+ white should have played 15.Qxf7+ Kxf7 16.Ng5+ Kg8 17.Nxh3 exd4 18.Nxd4 Nxd4 19.exd4 Bxd4 20.Rb1 with roughly equal game.

   Jan-02-26 N Theodorou vs L Dominguez Perez, 2025 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 37.Rb7! was a lovely shot. But black's position was already precarious anyway. For example, 36...f6 37.Qg3 Rc6 38.h6 Qe7 39.Nxe6 +-, or 36...Nf5 37.Bxf5 exf5 38.h6 f6 39.Qg3 Rb8 40.Nd7!! +-

   Jan-02-26 A Elo vs Fischer, 1957

Honza Cervenka: 42.c4 was absolutely incomprehensible move giving black practical chance to play for win. 46.Kg3 was decisive mistake but it was just a logical consequence of the bad decision made four moves earlier.

   Jan-02-26 Goutham Krishna H vs M A Tabatabaei, 2025 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 30...Bxc4 was necessary. Black was badly spanked for his too passive approach to this game.

   Dec-29-25 K Tsarouhas vs X Mastalerz, 2016 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: <goodevans><I reckon Black actually played <58...Rf4?>> It looks quite plausible. And the continuation making most sense could be 58...Rf4 59.h7 Kg7 60.h8=Q+ Kxh8 61.Kg6 Kg8 62.c6 Rf2 63.c7 Rg2+ 64.Kf6 Rc2 65.Rxa2 Rc6+ 66.Kg5 Rxc7 etc. In this line 61.Kg6 ...

Nov-13-07  Zebra: What about <me thinks>?
Jan-01-08  Ron: This might be a "missed chance" game:
Adams vs Topalov, 2007

This game ended in a draw but comment there seem to show that Adams missed a chance to win material.

Feb-12-08  suenteus po 147: <Honza> Not sure if you're interested or not, but here's a tournament played in Czechoslovakia way back in 1923: Game Collection: Karlsbad 1923

Incidently, is the proper spelling of Karlsbad with a "K" or a "C"?

Feb-17-08  brankat: Best wishes for Your Birthday!
Feb-17-08  square dance: happy birthday, honza! its nice to have you and your analysis around.
Mar-04-08  Knight13: <Honza> I'm going over the World Championship games and I see your post a lot! Seems like you viewed them all, huh.

Just wondering: Which World Championship is your most favorite?

Honza Cervenka: <Knight13> I have no special preference in WCh matches though some like Alekhine vs Capablanca, Botvinnik vs Smyslov matches or Fischer vs Spassky and of course K vs K I have studied quite a lot as I have books about them. But I see all them as top events. The match of Alekhine and Bogoljubov from 1929 I see as one of most undervalued and most entertaining matches in WCh history.
Mar-14-08  Knight13: <Honza Cervenka: The match of Alekhine and Bogoljubov from 1929 I see as one of most undervalued and most entertaining matches in WCh history.> Yeah, those definitely are! Bogoljubov got crushed. Alekhine was <at least> slightly better in almost every game, even the drawn ones. And you kibitzed on every single one of those games. :-)

Honza Cervenka: <suenteus po 147> Karlsbad is German version of the name of city Karlovy Vary. I think that "K" is more usual and correct here but I have seen "Carlsbad" as well.
Apr-17-08  positionalgenius: <Honza> Do you play on schemingmind?
May-05-08  Ron: Here are two games that might be good for the Missed Chance collection.

This game Bronstein vs Botvinnik, 1951

occurred in their World Championship Match and it seems as pointed out by <Ray Keene> and <KingG>, Bronstein missed the spectacular 22. Bg5 !!

Another game, in the 2007 World Chess Cup, Bacrot vs Karjakin, 2007

I had suggested for Bacrot 26. Re1 which probably can lead to a win but then <computer chess guy> pointed out an even stronger move 26. Rb1. Though if I recall correctly this game was one of the faster time control tie breaker games.

Honza Cervenka: <Ron> Thanks! 22.Bg5 in B vs B game is really nice find but unfortunately it doesn't force win for white in all lines and black can decline the sac without any harm. I think that with perfect defense the result of game would not be different and so it is not the exact kind of material for my collection of Missed Chances. In the second case both 26.Rb1! and 26.Re1! would have been decisive in white's favour.

Nov-01-08  gambitfan: Hi Honza !

You raised an interesting question in the game :

S Garcia-Martinez vs Karpov, 1973

<Why not 46... ♗xe5 ?>

I tried to give an answer which was competled by another player...

Have a look !

Jan-15-09  Bakounine: Hello Honza,
I browsed with great interest the game collection of Dr M.Filip "We are all learning from them" you put on ChessGames.com. No doubt this is certainly a superb book. Do you know if it has been translated into english ? Or at least can one found it in czech language ? Like you I like the old master's games and also those of the period 1950-1975 because I think them more educational than certain games of to day played by top players often based on microscopic advantage after an endless opening razor-sharp variation. But it's just a matter of taste... Thank you

Honza Cervenka: <Bakounine> I don't know if the book was ever translated into English or any other language but in Czech or Slovak antiquarian bookshops which are focused on chess literature it is available. Try to type "Celý svìt se od nich uèí" into Google and it will show you some links to it. Bellow is one of them:

Po elegantní dvojí vidlièce mìl bílý už asi prohrát, jenže èerný si nechal chytit a odebrat zatoulaného konì, èímž bílého vrátil do partie.
Feb-16-09  brankat: Wishing You a very happy Birthday Jan!
