I live in Stredokluky (a village near Prague, Czech republic). I play both practical and correspondence chess. My rating in practical chess (Czech national ELO) oscillates somewhere between 2010 and 2060, in correspondence chess I have rating 2155 (my best was 2220 in the middle of 90's). I have no special favorite player but I like to view good games of old masters (Tarrasch, Schlechter, Chigorin etc.)

   Jan-07-26 Short vs Kramnik, 1996

Honza Cervenka: It looks like white forgot to insert 45.Bxg7+ with idea 45...Kh7 46.Qf4 +-. Or did he miss that after 46.Qh6+ black has 46...Qh7? Anyway, instead of 42...Bh6(?) black should have played 42...Qf5 43.Rh2 Bf4 with decisive attack. 41...Bxe3 was also inaccurate for eventual ...

Jan-06-26 Kramnik vs Short, 1995 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: Ugly 20...Bc8 was the only chance to avoid quick disaster, though white's advantage would be still great and probably decisive anyway.

   Jan-06-26 Capablanca vs Lasker, 1924

Honza Cervenka: <which begs the question if Honza was here on the 30th June why did he not wish me a happy birthday?> Mea culpa!

   Jan-06-26 Smyslov vs G Ilivitsky, 1952

Honza Cervenka: Instead of 14...Nd4 it was correct to play 14...gxf5. Also 15...gxf5 would have been a lesser evil. 16...Bxh6 was another mistake but the position of black was then bad anyway.

   Jan-06-26 T Luther vs O Touzane, 1990

Honza Cervenka: This is quite strange coincidence. But first 10 moves are just a standard opening line, and most of moves after black's three consecutive mistakes (14...Nd4, 15...Bxe4 and 16...Bxh6) are more or less forced or at least fairly obvious.

   Jan-05-26 A Pomar vs Hort, 1965

Honza Cervenka: Instead of 15.Nf6+ white should have played 15.Qxf7+ Kxf7 16.Ng5+ Kg8 17.Nxh3 exd4 18.Nxd4 Nxd4 19.exd4 Bxd4 20.Rb1 with roughly equal game.

   Jan-02-26 N Theodorou vs L Dominguez Perez, 2025 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 37.Rb7! was a lovely shot. But black's position was already precarious anyway. For example, 36...f6 37.Qg3 Rc6 38.h6 Qe7 39.Nxe6 +-, or 36...Nf5 37.Bxf5 exf5 38.h6 f6 39.Qg3 Rb8 40.Nd7!! +-

   Jan-02-26 A Elo vs Fischer, 1957

Honza Cervenka: 42.c4 was absolutely incomprehensible move giving black practical chance to play for win. 46.Kg3 was decisive mistake but it was just a logical consequence of the bad decision made four moves earlier.

   Jan-02-26 Goutham Krishna H vs M A Tabatabaei, 2025 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 30...Bxc4 was necessary. Black was badly spanked for his too passive approach to this game.

   Dec-29-25 K Tsarouhas vs X Mastalerz, 2016 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: <goodevans><I reckon Black actually played <58...Rf4?>> It looks quite plausible. And the continuation making most sense could be 58...Rf4 59.h7 Kg7 60.h8=Q+ Kxh8 61.Kg6 Kg8 62.c6 Rf2 63.c7 Rg2+ 64.Kf6 Rc2 65.Rxa2 Rc6+ 66.Kg5 Rxc7 etc. In this line 61.Kg6 ...

May-26-09  Albertan: Honza I have tried to answer your the question you left regarding the game

Tal vs Keres, 1962 using the program Deep Rybka 3.

Jul-29-09  totololo: <Honza>
1. What is the usage today of software : Rybka,Fritz, etc. in correspondence chess? Is it allowed?

2. How is considered in your country young Blatny? I like v.much his creativity....I was following Pachman and Hort in the past....

3.I have no time to participate in the over the board tournaments so I consider correspondence chess or via e-mail,.... but I am concerned by the computer mania I observed on this site. DO you have a recommandation( what is the best from your point of view) ? I use a computer for my own analysis and preparation but not during a game... I am still interested in my own brain...

I played opens in the 80s in France - my best game was against Y.Murray - I lost but it was considered the best game of the open - Najdorf....Browne system. I was around 2000 a good club player in France.... Professional life killed the chess participation but not the chess pleasure... TY in advice for your reply here.
Sincerly yours,
Totololo

Honza Cervenka: <1. What is the usage today of software : Rybka,Fritz, etc. in correspondence chess? Is it allowed?>

Yes, it is allowed (at least in official ICCF events) and I would say it is used widely in CC now. But I don't think that it matters so much. Comps alone (without human assistance) are not yet good enough to beat consistantly CC human players even on my own level around 2200 (well, I never faced Rybka running on some really good hardware but I have some experiences with Fritz 11 and it didn't impress me much), not to mention top CC GMs. They are very useful for analysis as it can be done much more precisely and deeply in the same timeframe than before and with them you can avoid silly tactical mistakes but if you want to succeed in real correspondence chess you must work it out for yourself. It is no coincidence that among top CC players you can see today mostly the same names that were there ten or twenty years ago.

<2. How is considered in your country young Blatny? I like v.much his creativity.>

I did not hear much about him recently. He dropped professional chess a few years ago and now he works as a manager in Bobycentrum Hotel in Brno. Instead of chess he is playing rather poker in last few years. It is a pity for chess as he would be still among leading Czech players and he was quite original too. But I can understand his decision in this matter. Chess is not much lucrative profession if you are not among top 25 or so in the world and Pavel Blatny knew well that in his 40s he can't already reach this level and that he can ensure much better sustenance for himself in some other way.

<3.I have no time to participate in the over the board tournaments so I consider correspondence chess or via e-mail,.... but I am concerned by the computer mania I observed on this site. I never had really good chess program running on really good computer and so I never used much comp assistance when I was active CC player. I had then only archaic Fritz 1.0 running on very old comp with 486 processor and only a few years ago I bought discounted Fritz 8 which was then already quite obsolete too. If you have no big ambitions in CC and want to play just for fun, you can use the comp as blunder-checker only. I was using the comp mainly in this way too.

Jul-30-09  totololo: <Honza> TY for your kind answer. I enjoyed Prague a few years ago in a vacation trip with my family. Yes I would like to play for fun and some theoretical points I was thinking and try to verify in a play... TY gain... Your obligee

Honza Cervenka: Hello, dear chess friends!

Last Monday I have become a proud father of daughter named Aneta. You can see her picture on the site of regional newspaper “Kladensky denik” (Kladno’s Daily) at http://kladensky.denik.cz/miminka/m... where is a polling contest for the most sympathetic baby born this week in regional maternity hospitals organized by the newspaper. Personally I am not much interested in such a kind of competitions but my beloved wife is quite competitive girl and she would be very much pleased to see our little sweetie victorious. And so as I like to see my wife to be glad and happy (if it is possible to be happier now) I would be very much thankful for any vote from you for our little Aneta…:-D

Warm regards to all of you!

Mar-20-10  zanshin: <Honza> Congratulations on your daughter, Aneta!

Honza Cervenka: Dear chess friends, thank you for your great support of our little Aneta. But the polling contest at http://kladensky.denik.cz/miminka/m... is still continuing and our main rivals are very strong, well-organized and dedicated. Right now we are closely on the second place followed narrowly by third contender. We need henceforth your support!

More info about voting see at pages 3655-3657 of The Kibitzer's Café

Mar-23-10  Boomie: Congratulations on the new addition to your family! How exciting for you.

Following an old American tradition, I will vote early and often.

Mar-23-10  benjinathan: Hey <Honza> Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful daughter! She really is the most sympathetic;-).

Mar-23-10  achieve: <Honza> Let me add to the warm congratulations you are receiving here; <Aneta> is DEFINITELY prettier than the main rival, Michael Jicha... (not sure if i got his name right).

I cast my vote and Aneta is right on the heels of that little bugger; we'll get him! ;))

Best wishes again, also for your wife, and may Aneta grow in good health.

Honza Cervenka: Many thanks for your great support. We are very close to our main rival now and I believe that with your help we will be in lead soon. But our opponents are well organized and much dedicated and so we must hold our effort up till the end...:-D
Mar-23-10  zanshin: As of right now, we have overtaken Michael 480 to 479!
Mar-23-10  benjinathan: Into the breach!
Mar-23-10  benjinathan: Aneta is leading!
Mar-23-10  Robin01: <Honza Cervenka>When does the voting stop?
Mar-23-10  benjinathan: <When does the voting stop?>

When the opposition is crushed!

Mar-23-10  benjinathan: Sorry, it is possible I am getting carried away. When is the next World v. G.M. game, I think I am in need of comeptition.
