<Format>:

[player]-[player] [result] [# of MOVES]

==4 Different Scoring Methods==

Standard Moves Ranker (1st place-Over[3pts], 1st place-Under [7pts], Exact [10pts])

Bonus Ranker (3rd place-Over[1pts],2nd place-Over[2pts],3rd place-Under [5pts], 2nd place-Under [6pts]

Standard Moves/Bonus Ranker [Add all to together]

1st place Ranker [how many 1st place you have in Standard Moves Ranker]

For example:

<Note: Participants 3, 4, and 5 are predicated on nobody scoring an exact as Participant 2 did. If someone hits an exact, the closest score under and over will score the points for second place.>

Actual Game: [player]-[player] 0-1 45

Participant 1: [player]-[player] 1/2 45
Participant 2: [player]-[player] 0-1 45
Participant 3: [player]-[player] 0-1 44
Participant 4: [player]-[player] 0-1 43
Participant 5: [player]-[player] 0-1 46

Participant 1: No points even though 45 is correct. Results must be correct. If Result is wrong and moves # is correct...you get no points whatsoever

Participant 2: 10 pts rewarded for correct Result/moves #

Participant 3: 7 pts rewarded for closest under (1st-Under) to 45 moves

Participant 4: 6 pts rewarded for the 2nd closest under (2nd-Under) to 45 moves.

Participant 5: 3 pts rewarded closest OVER(1st-OVER) to 45 moves.

Again, the description of Participant 3, 4, and 5 are based on there being no exact prediction as made by Participant 2.

<IF> there is an exact or an under closest, the highest scoring over participant will be 2nd over. The second closest over will be 3rd over. The <ONLY> time there will be a first over is if there is no exact or under winner.

Aug-24-06  YouRang: <1. b6+ Kb8 and the rest of the line leads to stalemate.> I think the rest of the line is okay, except that 7. Qxa1 is indeed stalemate, so we can't do that.

How about 7. Qg8, threatening Kd7# or Ke7#? The black queen can't put me in check because I have TWO places to move my king, both leading to mate..

Aug-24-06  YouRang: Very sneaky. You mirror my queen moves on the 8th rank with queen moves on the a-file.

Okay, I think I got it...

7. Qe8! Qa4 (mirror my move)
8. Qe5+! Ka8
9. Qh8!

And now you can't mirror my moves anymore, because I would take your queen with check - the stalemate is gone. :-)

OhioChessFan: You're getting closer, <YouRang> This puzzle is stunning in its complexity, with such a simple opening position.
Aug-24-06  YouRang: <OhioChessFan: 7 Qe8 Qg7> Right - now I can't get my king out of the way of my queen. Grrr. ;-)

Okay then, but you can't play 7...Qg7 unless your queen is a1. So, what if I play 7. Qg8 first (like I did before). You play 7...Qa2, and NOW I play 8. Qe8 (with 9. Qe5 in view, as above).

Since your queen is now on a2, you can't move to the 7th rank anymore (...Qf7 is prevented by my queen on e8). Now what?

<one fun thing i loved to do with record players and spool decks is to play the songs at half or twice the speed.. hehehehe it could make reba mcintyre sound like Jim Reeves or Tex Ritter sound like the Chipmunks...>

<Open Defence> I remember every single 8 track player in the world that was in a car had to have some kind of little tape/paper construction in the slot to keep the 8 track from dragging. Anyone who had an 8 track, knows what I mean. If not, I can't explain it any better than that.

Aug-29-06  mack: <OhioChessFan> Maybe you get this a lot, but do you like Guided By Voices?

OhioChessFan: LOL <Mack> after a trip to Googleville, I now know who Guided by Voices is. I am clueless about almost all music made after the 70's. U2 has some nice stuff, Talking Heads are interesting, the Seattle scene never did much for me, too unmelodic, ditto most Album Oriented Rock.
Aug-30-06  brankat: <OhioChessFan> Hi there OCF!

I'm trying to organize a consultation game, something along the lines of "the Yanks" vs "the Cunucks", 3 players on each team. Canadian team is set-up and ready, now I'm working on the American counterpart. I will also take care of all the other organisational matters. The game should start by the end of this week.

Should You be willing to take part in the contest, it would be a pleasure and a privilege. Could You please let me know, at Your earliest convenience.

Aug-30-06  brankat: <OCF> Thank You for a prompt response.

The first sentence of Your Bio was the initial reason for wanting You on the American team :-) Just joking.

If 1 day for a move is what is preventing You from participating, perhaps You may want to re-consider.

First, it has still not been decided upon. Secondly, even with a move/day clause, it is actually m/d per a team, which really gives You 2 days.

Anyway, should You change Your mind, please let me know.

Nf2+

Aug-31-06  YouRang: Great puzzle, but I haven't figured it out yet -- it seems like there are lots of variations.

So far, the best I can come up with is the general idea is that both sides get a queen, and White can draw by perpetually checking. But I haven't 'proved' that this can be forced, nor that the perpetual checks are unavoidable.

I have the feeling that I'm missing the main idea...

OhioChessFan: The main idea is that White can draw by perpetually checking. As for Queening, the threat is greater than the execution.

OhioChessFan: ** Black's Reply to Puzzle of August 26 **

** **

1. Nf2+ Kg3

The Black King wants to stay off the c8 and d8 diagonals. If White can Queen with check, White gains the tempo needed to stop the a pawn.

Aug-31-06  YouRang: Okay - I see it now. Very cool puzzle. :-)

1. Nf2+ (preventing promotion at h1)
1...Kg3 (Black wants to avoid h3,h4 and g4)
2. c7 (threatening to promote either at c8 or d8!)
2...a2 (threatening to promote at a1)

But this sets up a series of moves that will ultimately lead to a 3-fold repitition. Black must avoid squares that allow White to promote with check!

3. Ne4+ Kf3
4. Nd2+ Ke3
5. Nc4+ Kf3 (...Kd4 6. cxd8=Q+)

So the black king is subjected to perpetual knight checks on g3, f3 or e3; or else allow White to promote a queen with check.

1/2-1/2!

  OhioChessFan: 5. Nc4+ Ke4
Sep-01-06  YouRang: <OhioChessFan: 5. Nc4+ Ke4> Oh, look at that! Black has a couple more squares it could pass to (e4 or e5). :-|

But I don't think it really matters. If the black king is to avoid moving to a square where White can promote with check, then he is trapped on a group of squares for which the white knight can persist in checking:

5. Nc4+ Ke4
6. Nd2+ Ke5
7. Nc4+ Ke4

Evidently, f4 is the one square the the black king really needs, but he can't because his own dumb pawn is standing there!
