| Mar-24-11 | | playground player: <DEA> Try to get along with your toes for a while, and then report back to us. |
|
Mar-24-11
 | | OhioChessFan: I am guessing <pp> meant get along <without> your toes. Of course, we can identify <some> purpose(s), but in an overarching sense, no, we don't know the sum total of their purpose. Interestingly enough, the Bible does address the matter. Judges 1:6-7 Then Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes. And Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me." Then they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. I think it's a safe conclusion the intent was to make a fighting man useless without his thumbs and big toes. |
|
| Mar-24-11 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Figure it out - our toes have little purpose so therefore they, by process of evolution, will disappear in a million years or so. (I'm sorry to disappoint all you toe-lovers out there) Yup, those Darwin finches are still Darwin finches (specialization is a part of evolution - did Noah bring 14 different types of food for 14 different types of finches? - that is the whole point of their beaks changing, to specialize for each type of food to be found). You have in your mouth incisors, molars and canine teeth. Of what purpose are these fang like canines - your answer is: when monkeys fly out of my butt? Eucalyptus and bamboo only grow in certain areas and pandas & koalas cannot eat anything else (which is why you don't find them here except in zoos), so you think they should just eat whatever?? Scientists estimate that over one million species of plants and animals have gone extinct (not just dinosaurs) and you feel this has happened in the last 10000 years? The flood? Now, quote the scriptures where David cut off the foreskins of 200 dead Philistines so he could marry Saul's daughter. |
|
Mar-24-11
 | | OhioChessFan: If toes have so little purpose, why did we end up with them in the first place? On a related note, if a gazillion years from now Homo Sapiens don't have toes, will they still be Homo Sapiens? |
|
| Mar-24-11 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: For climbing trees, obviously (for food and protection). |

They're still finches. I don't know anyone who denies adaptations. But to extrapolate from small adaptations to huge changes in species is a laughable exercise in overextending. <Of what purpose are these fang like canines - your answer is: when monkeys fly out of my butt? > You didn't ask that question. Please don't pretend that comment of mine was in response to such a question you posed. <Eucalyptus and bamboo only grow in certain areas and pandas & koalas cannot eat anything else (which is why you don't find them here except in zoos), so you think they should just eat whatever??> Apparently those finches adapted to various foods. Or the finches of today are the result of the adapations of finches of yesterday. But you want to insist koalas are not? A bit inconsistent, aren't you? <Scientists estimate that over one million species of plants and animals have gone extinct (not just dinosaurs) and you feel this has happened in the last 10000 years?> Yes.
<The flood?>
In large part, yes. Isn't the huge explosion in the fossil record consistent with a mass extinction? <Now, quote the scriptures where David cut off the foreskins of 200 dead Philistines so he could marry Saul's daughter.> 1 Samuel 18:27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife. |
|
| Mar-24-11 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Homo Sapiens means "wise man"; you are probably thinking of Homo Erectus - "standing man" |
|
| Mar-24-11 | | TheFocus: Try walking without using your toes. Toes are important for balance, climbing, and for the twists and turns that are necessary for all foot and leg movements. Plus, they are useful for scratching with.
Toes in a million years will still be just as useful (and lovely). I have a rule (not a fetish) about women's feet. If she takes care of her feet and keeps her toenails neat looking, the rest of her will be clean too. |
|
| Mar-24-11 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Yor answer "when monkeys fly out of my butt" is not an appropriate answer to ANY question!! Get it? |
|
| Mar-24-11 | | TheFocus: <DEA> Unless the question is "What is more painful than monkeys flying <into> my butt?" "Well, monkeys flying out of my butt would be painful also." |
|
| Mar-24-11 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Adaptation, specialization, natural selection, survival of the fittest, evolution are all mechanisms of growth. Oh yes I will miss my toes and I do have a hard time walking without them, but when the temp is 10 degrees F and I am outdoors they freeze first and I wish I didn't have them. (joke) |

Mar-24-11
 | | OhioChessFan: <Yor answer "when monkeys fly out of my butt" is not an appropriate answer to ANY question!! Get it?> It wasn't an answer to ANY question! Get it? FWIW, I'll decide what is appropriate for me to say, thanks. |

Mar-24-11
 | | OhioChessFan: <Adaptation, specialization, natural selection, survival of the fittest, evolution are all mechanisms of growth.> I taught my dog to sit up and beg this week. By the same mechanism, I'll have him analyze the Puzzle of the Day. |

Mar-25-11
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Ohio> thanks for that most intriguing post on the <Memorable Quotes> forum. Nice find- I'm inclined to believe those two wags were the same person. Do you think they are the same person?
I bet they were.
If so, I'm sorry "HE" is gone. Very funny PERSON. |
|
Mar-25-11
 | | OhioChessFan: I think the same person. The odd little defense of Kulla by Ghoul after their bickering struck me as very suspicious and is what set me to looking at their profiles. |
|
Mar-25-11
 | | OhioChessFan: I read Kulla and Ghoul's kibitzing on the Botvinnik page again. Very similar posting style. No spelling errors, fairly formal language/grammar, the only occasional grammatical errors are run on sentences. It is obvious to me that they are the same person. Definitely a he. High school girls simply don't write like that. |
|
Mar-25-11
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Heh- yes, to be sure, in fact people under 40 don't write like that either. I remember reading <Some Italian Guy With a Long Name> saying that nobody should attempt an autobiography before the age of 40, because prior to that age, the person would be too stupid to say anything of importance. At any rate- some fine sleuthing, sounds like case closed on this one. I wish he would come back. In fact there are so many quality kibbutzers from "The Golden Age" that I ran across this year who are sorely missed, I should think. |

| Mar-25-11 | | hms123: <OCF> I would like to use your real name as part of a series of people that I am acknowledging in the Chess Life article. If that's ok, either email Daniel at chessgames.com and he will forward it on to me, or just let me know and I will post an email address for you to use to send it directly to me. If it's not ok, that's fine, and I will continue to list you as <OhioChessFan>. thanks--hms |

| Mar-25-11 | | playground player: <DEA> I congratulate you on your faith walk. That your faith is drastically misplaced, I deplore. Maybe you'll outgrow Evolution someday; plenty of us have done so. |
|
| Mar-26-11 | | hms123: <OCF> Thanks. I sent a brief reply as well. |
|
| Mar-26-11 | | Lennonfan: <OCF>iv read your and <DEA>'s above discussion with interest...and i have several questions...1.just how big was noah's arc,and how long did it take this wise man to construct it?
2.why did the animals aboard this vessel like the lion's and tigers, not feast on the buffalo and the other animals they prey upon..
3.do you not agree that this arc would have to be very very very big, like the size of a small island or something, and how did noah kp these animals under control and how did he feed them, and what with??
I know many people with faith, but sometimes when confronted with difficult questions about god and the bible, they just say..."he could do anything because he's god!"....and thats exactly where i have problems believing anything in the bible... |
|
| Mar-26-11 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: The dimensions of Noah's ark are given in the bible and it was very big when you convert cubits to feet, altho not big enuff for ALL the species. Not sure if Noah would have known there were 14 types of finches for example, but the finches developed separately on Galapagos island (evolution). If the bible is accurate, planet earth is less than 10,000 years old and the dinosaurs somehow "missed the boat" and drowned. For those of you who are worried about losing your toes, don't worry, it will take at least a million years, plenty of time to get new shoes. As for the David & Saul deal, if I were told I could have the king's daughter in marriage for that kind of deal, I would have passed on it. |
|
Mar-26-11
 | | OhioChessFan: <1.just how big was noah's arc,and how long did it take this wise man to construct it?> Genesis 6:15 "And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits." A rough estimate of a cubit is 18 inches, so it would be about 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet tall. <2.why did the animals aboard this vessel like the lion's and tigers, not feast on the buffalo and the other animals they prey upon..> They were separated into rooms.
Genesis 6:14 "Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch." <3.do you not agree that this arc would have to be very very very big, like the size of a small island or something, and how did noah kp these animals under control and how did he feed them, and what with??> Very large, yes. Under control by being penned up in rooms. He gathered the food needed for them. Genesis 6:21 "And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them." We can speculate there was some form of hiberatnion going on, but who knows for sure? <I know many people with faith, but sometimes when confronted with difficult questions about god and the bible, they just say..."he could do anything because he's god!"....and thats exactly where i have problems believing anything in the bible...> One of the best apologist writers/scientists I've read calls that appealing to "God on Demand". I would agree an inconsistency of a position is a strong argument against the position's viability. |

Mar-26-11
 | | OhioChessFan: <DEA: Not sure if Noah would have known there were 14 types of finches for example, but the finches developed separately on Galapagos island (evolution).> If I'm not mistaken, that was long after the time of Noah. <If the bible is accurate, planet earth is less than 10,000 years old and the dinosaurs somehow "missed the boat" and drowned.> Or they became extinct after that. If I'm not mistaken, you've admitted many extinct species. <For those of you who are worried about losing your toes, don't worry, it will take at least a million years, plenty of time to get new shoes. As for the David & Saul deal, if I were told I could have the king's daughter in marriage for that kind of deal, I would have passed on it.> I'd only do that if I was a pediatric surgeon. |
|
Mar-26-11
 | | OhioChessFan: <how long did it take this wise man to construct it?>> Missed this one. There is a suggestion in this verse of 120 years. I don't know if you can use the Bible to affirm any specific time frame. Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." |
