| Mar-30-11 | | YouRang: <NakoSonorense: Hi, YouRang. With all due respect, after seeing the discussion you had with OCF last year, it blows my mind away how you can still be a Christian. You should be one of us! =)> Well, I did use to be one of you until I decided (much to my surprise) that the Bible presents strong reasons for acknowledging a divine origin. As a result, I think I am much more understanding about the atheist point of view than most Christians. As for OCF, it's not uncommon to have disagreements. IMO, we had a minor and a major disagreement: The minor disagreement had to do with scientific matters and whether or not Genesis 1 should be understood literally. The major disagreement had to do with whether Christians should be in the business of accusing scientists of being liars. I don't think either of us are interested in renewing that debate. Anyway, my apologies for blowing your mind. ;-)
<Agree. IMO, he borrowed those accounts from somewhere else, maybe the Epic of Milgamesh or God-knows-what. All I am saying is that I find it hard to ignore the possibility that Noah story and others were plagiarized from older accounts.> From your perspective (i.e. believing that divine inspiration doesn't exist), I understand. I too suspect there is a connection. But even from the non-believer's perspective, I think we can't say for sure where it started. I'm leaning toward God-knows-what. :-) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <YouRang> I just learned from your post here that you are in fact a Christian! So based on your earlier dialogue with our host <Ohio>, I'm guessing you are a Christian in the tradition of fellow Christian scientists such as <Keppler>, <Newton>, and the great <Michael Faraday>? |

On the contrary, I consider their efforts to understand nature to be one of mankind's noblest and most successful endeavors. |

| Mar-31-11 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: <JFQ> I get things wrong all the time! I know it and I admit it! I think you are correct that Gilgamesh was pressed onto clay tablets; I may have been thinking of Code of Hammurabi which shows an Egyptian god handing down laws to Hammurabi and was most likely the inspiration for Moses 10 commandments. I have only been reading the bible for 6 months or so and have actually referenced different versions (KJV,NIV, Douay, etc) to try to understand what is being written. Believe it or not, I welcome the criticism. Do you JFQ believe that the earth is only 10,000 years old? BTW, archeologists have claimed that Gilgamesh precedes the ark story, I am only the messenger. Now, JFQ, I know that you are a teacher and my usage of "bullet points" would never pass muster in a HS or college paper, nonetheless, it is adequate to a free style debate, as we have here. Crass? Guilty as charged, no tea and crumpets for me tonite. A Christian called me a "hater, and a murderer" so I guess I can live with "crass" |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <God from the Alekhine> Well yes I was high handed and snippy as usual. I too welcome criticism, glad you can take it. I doubt anyone will call you a "hater" or "murderer" in this forum, <Ohio> runs an open, but civil thread in here. No, I don't believe the earth is 10,000 years old.
In fact, I would swear that I had a teacher in primary school who was almost certainly older than 10,000 years. "Mrs. Unwin."
She looked like a tiny white prune, and she used to whack us over the knuckles with a steel ruler. I was all for involving the police, but decided they might even be worse. We all called her "Mrs. Onion." |

| Mar-31-11 | | technical draw: There was a GI with me in the army whose name was Unthank. (We called him unthankful). So Unwin is probably a real name. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Ohio> ok yes- good point actually I should have made up an anecdote- we don't want that otherwise fine teacher's relatives suing you. Arriba! is actually the name of <hms123>'s wife, in case you didn't know. Though I was honored to be called Arriba! |
|
Apr-01-11
 | | OhioChessFan: I thought Arriba was Speedy Gonzalez's wife. And you <should> be called Arriba! |
|
| Apr-01-11 | | hms123: <OCF> You have confused Speedy's wife <Arriba> with my wife <Arriba!>. It's an easy mistake to make. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <krmr> good to see the French "wouf" again- it's been years now since I lived in Montreal and read French comics. Many people don't know that Quebec dogs say "wouf" instead of "woof." |

Apr-04-11
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Ohio>- a rare serious question for you- given our past discussion of this issue, what do you think about the administrators posting on the hoax page on April 1st, without taking care of any business- and some of it is actual chess site business- on their forum page for almost a week? Second question- do you ever email them and ask "what's up" during these absences? |
