<Format>:

[player]-[player] [result] [# of MOVES]

==4 Different Scoring Methods==

Standard Moves Ranker (1st place-Over[3pts], 1st place-Under [7pts], Exact [10pts])

Bonus Ranker (3rd place-Over[1pts],2nd place-Over[2pts],3rd place-Under [5pts], 2nd place-Under [6pts]

Standard Moves/Bonus Ranker [Add all to together]

1st place Ranker [how many 1st place you have in Standard Moves Ranker]

For example:

<Note: Participants 3, 4, and 5 are predicated on nobody scoring an exact as Participant 2 did. If someone hits an exact, the closest score under and over will score the points for second place.>

Actual Game: [player]-[player] 0-1 45

Participant 1: [player]-[player] 1/2 45
Participant 2: [player]-[player] 0-1 45
Participant 3: [player]-[player] 0-1 44
Participant 4: [player]-[player] 0-1 43
Participant 5: [player]-[player] 0-1 46

Participant 1: No points even though 45 is correct. Results must be correct. If Result is wrong and moves # is correct...you get no points whatsoever

Participant 2: 10 pts rewarded for correct Result/moves #

Participant 3: 7 pts rewarded for closest under (1st-Under) to 45 moves

Participant 4: 6 pts rewarded for the 2nd closest under (2nd-Under) to 45 moves.

Participant 5: 3 pts rewarded closest OVER(1st-OVER) to 45 moves.

Again, the description of Participant 3, 4, and 5 are based on there being no exact prediction as made by Participant 2.

<IF> there is an exact or an under closest, the highest scoring over participant will be 2nd over. The second closest over will be 3rd over. The <ONLY> time there will be a first over is if there is no exact or under winner.

However, mainly I'd just like to second <chancho's> last post.

Or as <OCF> sometimes puts it,

May-02-11  Tomlinsky: <OCF> Well, I was being somewhat mischievous when you wandered into the sketch and started receiving shrapnel from the intended target. Your timing was absolutely split-second perfect and I would have assisted in your defence but I was too busy stopping my sides from splitting while you were left standing with a question mark over your head.

The post that caused offence, citing lobster related details, has been removed after a complaint to the boss I assume. Ah well, no animals were harmed during the experiment.

re- <The dreaded removed post explanation>

Were you able to reconstruct the "game" from the result, the way <phony benoni> does for chess games with mistakes in the middle of the score?

If so, will you be posting the reconstructed <Ohio v. Lobster> game?

OhioChessFan: My retrograde analysis is a little rusty but I will get to work on it.
May-04-11

jessicafischerqueen: Really? I was just over there trying to make sense of it and I am totally mystified.

So far all I've gotten is that <tomlinsky> has a lobster avatar, and a mysterious character named <drik> may- or may not- be involved.

You may well realize that such morsels are catnip to the Mystery Novel enthusiast.

May-04-11
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: <drik> has nothing to do with it.

<tomlinsky> and <johnlspouge> were apparently referencing lobsters. It apparently was making some kind of reference to <patzer> Apparently whatever post connected <patzer> and lobsters was deleted. Thereupon I walked into the ongoing conversation at the point where a discussion of a flag waving lobster was referenced. I presume you know the slang references regarding rock lobsters and flag waving. I didn't know if the references were to the real McCoy of lobsters and flags, to the slang meanings, a double entendre, or a little of each. I then posted a picture of a flag waving lobster and <patzer> took great offense at that. Here's a post explaining my point of view (page 1844 if the link doesn't take you there) Kenneth Rogoff

In any case, I never saw an important post in the discussion and am still a little clueless about the specifics, though I guess there is some slangy meaning to the lobsters. Hope that's clear.

jessicafischerqueen: <Ohio> that's some fine retrograde analysis to be sure, thanks for making the effort to let me know, and for giving geographical directions.

One more question- did <Tomlinsky> get his flag waving lobster because of the <Ohio v. Lobster> game, or did he already have it?

I know Rock Lobster is a <B52 song>.

I wonder what <patzer's> connection to lobsters might be.

Possibly he is a "lobster farmer."

I know they exist. They might be a touchy breed for all anyone knows.

I don't actually know any of those Kibutzers in question except for you and <Tomlinsky>.

May-05-11
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: I posted a link to a pic of the flag waving lobster. I think you've seen me drop links without comment to pics of whatever topic is being discussed. Anyway, a few days later <tomlinsky> had adopted that pic as his avatar. As for the slang meanings, here's a post <tpstar> made about rock lobster from the B-52's song:

<We were at the beach
Everybody had matching towels
Somebody went under a dock
And there they saw a rock
It wasn't a rock
It was a rock lobster!>

Flag waving means something like indecent exposure. Some speculate it's from that drop down panel in a pair of long underwear, and some suggest the idea of running an idea up the flagpole. Anyway, think a dirty old man in a raincoat and you might say he was flag waving.

  jessicafischerqueen: <indecent exposure>

Good grief...

And yet another funny poem from <tpstar>, he's definitely skilled at satire, there's no doubt about that.

I agree with your response to his most recent idea, however.

I think enforcement of posting guidelines should be handled solely by the two business owners.

I also found <tpstar's> comments about "elitism" among the "chessforum" crowd to be hypocritical and needlessly snide.

He himself is one of the most prominent members of that crowd, and more, his voice carries a lot of weight.

I hope he was including himself as one of the members of that crowd who should never be given power to instantaneously delete posts.

He's the last person at this website I'd give such power to. Yep the very last person.

Here's a scenario- <Tony> gets appointed and his first act as impartial post-policeman is to reduce the <Wesley So> page to the six posts that are in English.

Needless to say, I'd be a terrible choice also.

I think it's a bad idea to give such power to any site member, because we are all "stakeholders."

If more policing needs to be done, I think it more seemly for the admins to hire an outsider who has no stake in the website, no existing opinions about any of us here.

Best case would be the two founders actually visiting their own website often enough to address serious posting violations in good time.

OhioChessFan: Anyone who would want the position would be a terrible choice. I agree that <Best case would be the two founders actually visiting their own website often enough to address serious posting violations in good time.> But boiled down, what all the fuss is about is whether offensive content is removed in one hour, or ten hours. Is that really what people are upset about?

jessicafischerqueen: I believe so- it's the lag time that seems to have upset the most people on this last go-round.
