<diceman> It most certainly is, and <HUD> (starring Paul Newman, Patricia Neal and Melvyn Douglas) is an uncommonly brilliant film as well. ##############
SCENE
Hud, his little brother, and his estranged father are sitting in the local eatery during the town's rodeo week. Hud's little brother wants to drink a beer. Their father objects. Hud: "Why not? Let's get a little 'family feeling' going." ###############
SCENE
Hud and his family have just discovered their entire herd of steer has foot and mouth disease. Hud: "Let's sell the herd before anyone finds out..." Hud's Father: "Hud, you're an unprincipled man..." #######################
We used to quote these lines to each other all the time, particularly when we were out drinking together. |

| Oct-23-18 | | thegoodanarchist: < saffuna: The original cut of "Heaven's Gate" was over five hours. I watched most of the 2.5 hour version and it was mind-numbing. I can only imagine what the five-hour version was like.> Don't try to imagine, Jim! You might die of boredom... |

She wasn't hunting for eggs, though.

| Oct-23-18 | | thegoodanarchist: < Count Wedgemore: <saffuna> Ah yes, the film that made a whole movie company go bankrupt, wasn't it? Michael Cimino. First 'Deer Hunter', a true masterpiece, then 'Heaven's Gate'. > I hated 'Deer Hunter'. That wedding scene was horrendously dull. All those great actors & actresses, and the boredom nearly knocked me out cold. I finally fast-forwarded to the end of the scene. Gack. Then, DeNiro's character in the end was a total jerk to Cazale's character. Wouldn't let him borrow gear. But I didn't like Cazale's character either. So let him suffer! In fact, all the characters were idiots, IMO. Of course, it's been so long since I watched that movie I don't really remember all the characters, so maybe they were not all idiots. But I will assert it anyway, since the movie was dull. |
|
| Oct-23-18 | | thegoodanarchist: <Count Wedgemore> Per wikipedia, Cimino made 4 more films after that, all flops: <Michael Cimino ...moved to Los Angeles to take up screenwriting in 1971. After co-writing the script of Magnum Force and Silent Running he wrote the preliminary script Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Clint Eastwood read the script and sent it to his personal production company, which allowed Cimino to direct the film. After its success, Cimino co-wrote, directed, and produced the 1978 Academy Award-winning film The Deer Hunter. His next film, Heaven's Gate (1980), proved to be a financial failure.[2] Cimino directed four movies after Heaven's Gate and all of them failed commercially. > |

 | | saffuna: There's a very good book, "Final Cut," about the making of "Heaven's Gate" and how it bankrupted United Artists. Cimino didn't just spend too much money, he enriched himself with UA money. |

Politics? |

| Oct-23-18 | | diceman: <I hated 'Deer Hunter'.> When VCRs came out, that was my first clean copy of "Cavatina." (before VCRs, you'd hear a nice
60Hz buzz taping off the TV)
The good thing about playing music
is, when the movie sucks, plan B is the
soundtrack. |

| Oct-23-18 | | Keyser Soze: I liked Deer Hunter. Very slow narrative but nowadays people have chimp'like concentration. I mean "Once upon a time in America" would not mesmerize most of those youngsters nowadays maybe? Kramer vs Kramer sucks for me way more..(divorce drama?yikes) |

<Ohio> <TY saffuna. I stand corrected.> Respect for not quibbling, <Ohio>. I don't want to quibble with <Jim> either, but I did notice this yesterday- These two items don't mean the same thing, not by a long shot: 1. <the worst two days you've ever had on this site> 2. <the worst two days of my life> Anyways, I hope the recent fighting will continue to calm down, as the new admins gradually, get things in order again, and the signs, look good to me, now. I actually thought of the <worst two days I ever had on this website>: When I publicly lambasted <WGM Natalia Pogonina> and her husband for two days, for which I probably should have been banned or at least suspended. I was excoriated by a large herd of outraged <cg.com> members. The <worst two days of my life> was when my boyfriend in Montreal booted me out of his apartment in the middle of an ice storm. (I had to think about that one for a while because I came up with an alarmingly long list of the "worst two days of my life.") |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Jim> Really?
Did you even read my post? Do you mean to say that your worst two days on this website are also the two worst days of your life? If that is true, I'd have to say you don't have much of a life, eh? I don't believe that for a second. I think you have a rich, vibrant life and that the two worst days you ever had in that life have nothing to do with chessgames.com. At least, for your sake, I really hope that is the case. |
|
