Olga Viewer: Congrats to the CG team for getting over to the new aerver! I had hoped that meant the site had also been moved from perl but I understand how much work that will be. If you do manage to get it migrated, it will be much easier to find developers to work on it. Still hopeful for ...

Olga Viewer: <Z> Absolutely! If I wasn't crazy busy yesterday I would have checked Olga to verify it worked or not. I just wanted to confirm I've made sure this got added (as I missed it) to the new build :)

casaschi: <chessgames.com> about an html layout with chessboard on one side and move text next to it... there's many way to skin the cat, but you might be able to reuse something from an example of mine:

http://pgn4web.casaschi.net/demo.ht...

Notice how the move text expands horizontally to use the available space (or it could be set at a fixed width). Also the move text box has the same height as the chessboard+header window, so that the user never has to scroll up/down the browser page. At the same time some fancy javascript autoscrolls the game text panel to always show the current move on the chessboard.

Feel free to scan the source code and get pieces of inspiration or even bundles of code :-)

Um, I would rather you didn't do that, actually. ;s

Thanks for being so helpful! :)

  chessgames.com: Update:

• The board size you select (settings > Grow/Shrink) is now a "sticky" setting, so if you alter it Chessgames will "remember" and allow you to see all games with that sizing.

• Some very minor cosmetic changes, especially regarding the highlighted move.

More changes coming soon, including a side-by-side presentation.

Sep-17-17  Robed.Bishop: I really like Olga. It has a clean look and works well. My only suggestion is to allow a user to flip the board without having to open the settings to do so.

Keep up the good work!

Sep-17-17  Keyser Soze: I second <robbed bishop> suggestion . And also I would like to report a bug in this game:

Carlsen vs H Harestad, 2003

The game last move is 38. Rh7#

However with Olga, finishes with 23. Rxa7. (?!)

Thanks for the improvements again. The engine works smoothly .

Annie K.: I would love to be able to paste the engine analysis line from the popup window into the analysis box on the main game page, to see it play out. Any plans for that? :)

chessgames.com: Carlsen vs H Harestad, 2003 was an interesting case, it turned out that Olga (or perhaps the library chess.js) was terminating on what it regarded as "bad PGN" — three or four moves that should indicate capture (e.g. Qxa7) but were written as simply "Qa7". That's rather picky, although technically correct. I'll see if can provide an allowance for that.

<Annie K.> Even if the viewer is unable to do that I might be able to rig something so that you can switch back to the page in "engine analysis mode." Or perhaps it's best implemented as an Olga feature.

I'll consult with Chris on both of this items.

Annie K.: ...another approach would be having the engine analysis window come with its own playable Olga viewer, instead of the static diagram it has now.

casaschi: The following is from the PGN specifications:

"There are a number of suggested guidelines for use with implementing PGN reader software for permitting non-canonical SAN move representation. The idea is to have a PGN reader apply various transformations to attempt to discover the move that is represented by non-canonical input. Some suggested transformations include: letter case remapping, capture indicator insertion, check indicator insertion, and checkmate indicator insertion."

In other words, when writing PGN data they specify the strict rules to follow. When reading PGN data they recommend to be as tolerant as possible for minor inaccuracies, especially the ones that are easy to fix in an unambiguous way.

Sep-20-17  QueensideCastler: Which version of Stockfish is used for server analysis?

Stockfish development version is stronger than official release.

chessgames.com: Stockfish 8 v270317. (I believe that means it was released March 27th, 2017.) There's a newer official version that's come out since we installed it, but it's not a major release.
Sep-23-17  gauer: Chess viewer deluxe view had a tidy scoresheet-style of view in a couple sets of columns, along with triangle tags to enter a variation when hitting an RAV note to replay variations. But enjoyable for the first quick glance of a gid page of 2 players was seeing a rating output of the 2, attached to the header or viewer when it's known. Maybe it could be on the wish-list to see a "rating-high" or "current-rating" report if its then regular or active rating is/was not known for the time/conditions that the game was played.
Sep-24-17  gauer: Although I hadn't used <mobile> mode much in the past month, it's looking great today for gid and tid pages. Especially I liked where the photo appears for pid persons, but did turn off the <show avatars, graphics> at Preferences Page which helps for bandwidth. Do hi-res photos always have to load, or is a smaller size available for show? Sometimes the customizable header menu dimensions would not stretch to the landscape-portrait dimensions of my iPhone 4s screen a while back, but it doesn't seem to do it as much now. Is there a global setting available at Preferences Page to remember the size of the shrink of your viewer by default, which is good as landscape, but would prefer tapping the downsize in portrait mode a bit.
Sep-24-17  zanzibar: The "+" button for auto-play is non-intuitive.

I assumed it allowed a subvariation to be added, naively.

What's wrong with a right-pointing triangle glyph like everybody else in the world uses?

offramp: Pgn4web had a useful feature where if you pressed c8 you got the FEN for the position. Pressing b8 gave you the game pgn.

It's a pity Olga doesn't have these. For the FEN, the quickest way seems to be to ask for a Stockfish engine analysis; the FEN appears below the analysis.

chessgames.com: <Pgn4web had a useful feature where if you pressed c8 you got the FEN for the position.>

Olga has this too: it's one of the powerful features hidden in the "SETTINGS" button (the cogwheel). It's the large button to the right that says "FEN", when you click it it should wiggle and the FEN will be on your clipboard.

<The "+" button for auto-play is non-intuitive.> We were just mimicking pgn4web. I suppose the symbol you have in mind is the one Chess Viewer Deluxe uses; a symbol that resembles this:

    ▶

We decided against that because it too much resembles the forward/backward buttons.

chessgames.com: <Do hi-res photos always have to load, or is a smaller size available for show?>

Chessgames is not smart enough (yet) to send you shrunk versions of graphics, sorry. In the future we may use a content delivery service that worries about details like that for us.

Speaking of mobiles, one of the features of Olga regards how mobiles handle it when you try to manipulate pieces: it doesn't attempt to scroll the page while you move the piece. And yet, if you just give the page a casual flick, you'll scroll. I know it sounds like a picayune detail, but it's the kind of thing that can be extremely frustrating if not implemented correctly.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Olga is interesting. Having seen games with this viewer, the old viewer seems too small. On the negative side, Olga's diagrams are too big for my taste. If smaller, it would become my preferred viewer.

chessgames.com: <Olga's diagrams are too big for my taste. If smaller, it would become my preferred viewer.> Go to any game, click on SETTINGS (the cogwheel icon) then use the options "Shrink" and "Grow" and you can adjust the board size.

Chessgames will remember your setting when you leave the game page, so you don't have to do that every time you watch a game.

Perhaps within a session, but not for me when I close the browser and/or open a new session on chessgames.com. The Olga board is at the same default size. Given that the settings bar disappears off screen for me after I shrink it once and so have to keep clicking "settings" until I get to the size I want- not great. For reference, I'm using Mozilla Firefox, if that makes any difference.

Great site!

chessgames.com: <Muttley101> Thanks for pointing that out. It should work again, shortly.
Sep-24-17  notyetagm: <OLGA VIEWER> Is there a way to highlight the last move made, with square highlighting or an arrow?

Thanks

chessgames.com: <Is there a way to highlight the last move made, with square highlighting or an arrow?> Not yet but it's a good idea.

BTW, the issue regarding board sizing has been resolved, although you may have to restart your browser to be sure you're using the new version.

chessgames.com: Also, Olga does not have a feature to let you see the PGN, but we regarded that as redundant to the links below each game:
