Olga Viewer: Congrats to the CG team for getting over to the new aerver! I had hoped that meant the site had also been moved from perl but I understand how much work that will be. If you do manage to get it migrated, it will be much easier to find developers to work on it. Still hopeful for ...

Olga Viewer: <MissScarlett: Things back working as normal. I noticed that in this game A Humphrey vs Fischer, 1955, the original move <31.R4g3> wasn't showing, so corrected it to <Rgg3>. Will the new Olga handle both?> The new engine, Kokopu, handles both <31.R4g3> ...

Olga Viewer: <Z> Absolutely! If I wasn't crazy busy yesterday I would have checked Olga to verify it worked or not. I just wanted to confirm I've made sure this got added (as I missed it) to the new build :)

Oct-01-17  zanzibar: It would be optimal if the stockfish variations could be injected into the main game page, and made playable, ala SCID.

In fact, I'm sure users would like to add trial variations on the fly as well.

Does <chessgames> agree those are worthy features?

Might there be a commitment, however vague, to implement such features at some point in the future?

Oct-01-17  The Kings Domain: I like how the pieces move slower now. A good and needed improvement.
Oct-02-17  stst: Pl. align the listing of moves more to the center, not lying too long horizontally. May use a little smaller font to make it use less space - so is the board.

Here's a game from 1892:

chessgames.com: <Stonehenge> I'm embarrassed to say it took me a minute to get the joke.

<zanzibar> I totally agree deploying Olga in non-game situations would be great. In a perfect world, the static GIFs that we use to show game scores could be completely eliminated and tiny Olga viewers replaced them, whether it's a Stockfish analysis page, the daily puzzle, a kibitz, or the Opening Explorer.

That might be asking a bit much (in terms of load on the end user's platforms) so a compromise could be to engage it upon request in some circumstances. We'll have to experiment.

<stst> <Pl. align the listing of moves more to the center, not lying too long horizontally.> We experimented with that layout during testing, in fact it was the original design, but decided that for people with wide screens we might as well use that space for something. Note that if you view Olga on a narrow screen (e.g. a tablet or mobile phone) the moves do indeed conform to the board/button width.

MissScarlett: Are you aware of this issue? Botvinnik vs Petrosian, 1963

I can't use the analysis facility properly in the final position of Carlsen vs Nakamura, 2017. I'm wondering whether the fact it ended in perpetual is the source of the problem.

chessgames.com: Yes, that's a known issue. I just added it to the list as <Olga chokes on PGN that does not include "x" for captures, e.g. ed5 instead of exd5.>

We're working on a way to survey all of our games and fix the ones that have that issue (and a few other notational gaffs).

offramp: I have found two very first-worldy problems with Olga. They're related.

On pgn4web one could speed up the replay speed by pressing/clicking c2. There seems no way to speed up replay with Olga.

This leads to point 2, which is for my iPad. To get a faster replay I press the forward guillemet. But if I press it twice too fast, my iPad interprets this as a double click and smarms the board up to its biggest possible size.

I hope you can help as I am in a terrible state.

Oct-10-17  khan76: how do you get your board back to the original colors? or default colors?

Check It Out: Another good reason to have a more accessible "flip board" button near the top of the PGN: When you click on the puzzle of the day it takes you to that game's position, but if it is black to move you might want to flip the board. However, on a mobile device, scrolling down through the PGN to get to the settings, the last move is highlighted and it makes it difficult for the eye to not look at moves that are part of the solution; doing so ruins the puzzle for that day. It doesn't happen all the time but it shouldn't have to happen at all. I realize on a computer screen the entire PGN is visible but it is easier to ignore the solution moves and spot the settings button than on a mobile device where you have to scroll and look around for the settings button.

chessgames.com: <On pgn4web one could speed up the replay speed by pressing/clicking c2. There seems no way to speed up replay with Olga.> Press 1-9 to set the number of seconds per move. Press 0 to make it go as fast as it can. On a tablet this is meaningless and we're thinking of a way to give tablets a slider-option or at least a way to set their speed from the Preferences Page.

<This leads to point 2, which is for my iPad. To get a faster replay I press the forward guillemet. But if I press it twice too fast, my iPad interprets this as a double click and smarms the board up to its biggest possible size.> This is a known issue and unfortunately the fix is a little bit messy. We're working on that one.

<khan76: how do you get your board back to the original colors? or default colors?> That's not actually supported from within Olga. But as a Chessgames member you can always go to your Preferences Page and choose the color set "Wood I (default)".

<Another good reason to have a more accessible "flip board" button near the top of the PGN> We had enough, but yes, I agree.

chessgames.com: <To get a faster replay I press the forward guillemet. But if I press it twice too fast, my iPad interprets this as a double click and smarms the board up to its biggest possible size.> We're happy to say we've discovered a potential fix to this issue. :) The double-tap-zoom feature is disabled not on the entire page but on the control buttons.

Please try it again and confirm! Thanks for your help.

Oct-19-17  g15713: "Black to move. Last: 1.e4" message is now to right of the board and then next message "White to move. Last: 1...e5" goes underneath the board.

Just be consistent... Thank you

Check It Out: Playing through some games tonight and the pieces are all moving in crooked lines to get to their destination.

chessgames.com: <g15713> We've addressed that issue. Please test again and let us know if you experience it.

<CheckItOut> I think this falls under the category of < Piece animation "wiggles" when landing on a destination square, on some platforms in some circumstances.> unless you're describing something more dramatic. This has been traced back to a problem with the publicly available chessboard.js having problems when the screen/board has been resized. We're trying to come up with a fix because it's annoying at best.

Check It Out: <CG> nice fix on the double tap issue!
Oct-21-17  7he5haman: Hi <CG>,

Don't know if this has already been mentioned, but when I tap the ">" button <once> on my Android smartphone it automatically plays <two> moves (e.g. 1.e4 e5) rather than just one move (e.g. 1.e4).

Please can this be fixed?

Many thanks,
7he5haman

chessgames.com: <7he5haman> Could you please be more specific than "Android smartphone"? Is it a very old model?

We're investigating the issue. In the meantime, I believe that if you use Chrome as your browser on your Android (or Apple for that matter) that none of these issues are possible.

Oct-23-17  7he5haman: Hi <CG>,

The phone is a Sony Experia, about 2 years old.

I use Internet Explorer while browsing on my phone - and don't plan to change this!

chessgames.com: <7he5haman> OK great, listen—Chris has an idea of why this is happening, and came up with a method that I think can keep everybody (every browser) happy. I'll attempt to implement his fix and then you tell me if things get back to normal for you, OK?

  OhioChessFan: <2...Nf6. White to move.>

<I like that a lot. It's silly to say "Black just played 2...Nf6". Since when has White ever played 2...Nf6?>

Since when has White ever played 2...anything?

chessgames.com: <OCF> Yes, that was my point. The word “status” no longer appears, preserving valuable screen real-estate. I’ll have to also abbreviate the special three-fold repetition message to be more concise.

<7he5haman> Give it another go and les us know if it works now. You might have to clear your cache first.

Oct-24-17  ajile: Thanks for making this Olga program. I was stuck using only IE to play through games using Deluxe II when I had to click through warnings to make it work. And forget about Firefox and Chrome. Plus I could not update Java for fear of losing my IE capability. So now it appears I CAN update Java and still use CG.com with Olga? Awesome.
