Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

WannaBe: <Penguincw> Having been Dodgers fan my life, they will flame out, just like the last 3 play-offs. I predicted earlier on Jeremy Lim page that Dodgers will lose...

Now Dodgers are virtually forced to start Kershaw (currently, LAD have said it will be a game time decision) instead of originally scheduled J. Urias (see my previous post).

Does that mean, if game 5, Rich Hill will pitch????

That will give them Browns a chance to see a winning team before their Saturday flight to Tennessee to play the Titans. =))

Well, I've only watched baseball for about 5 years, and haven't watched a live game in its entirely for 2 (due to a switch from Rogers to Bell, TV), so you can probably make a better assessment than me (aside from the fact it's easier for you to follow the Dodgers).

If it were up to me, I'd actually start the rookie Urias vs. the rookie Joe Ross (likely), and hope for a Kershaw-Scherzer rematch.

Pitching Kershaw in G4 and then Hill in G5 would mean a guy still recovering from an injury and a guy with a bunch of blisters on his pitching hand both pitch on 3 days rest. Although sometimes one's just gotta go as though there's no tomorrow (literally), if either of these guys get injured or whatever, not sure if they'll heal by Spring (probably will).

I'm sure Urias will be a big part of the Dodgers in the future, and this would be a good test for him, although at a huge cost.

- RBIs by Cubs' pitchers this series: 6

- RBIs by Cubs' position players: 3

When Arrieta and MadBum met in late August/early September, I mentioned it would not only be a pitching duel, but a hitting duel.

saffuna: 1978 Series was great. Dodgers took the first two games, then Graig Nettles started catching everything the Dodgers hit. Reggie Jackson stuck his rear end into a double play throw and got away from it, struck out in an epic at bat vs. rookie Bob Welch, then hit a monster homer off Welch in game six.

Penguincw: Also the first homer MadBum have ever given up to a pitcher.

Looking at home-road splits for MadBum in the postseason, he's 6-0 on the road with a 0.50 ERA. At home, he's 2-3 with a 3.71 ERA. And AT&T park I imagine is not a hitter friendly park.

MadBum is probably one of those guys who do better when he's being booed at (or when pressure is greater), vs. being cheered at. He's 3-1 with a 1.37 ERA in a game where either (or both) teams could be eliminated from the playoffs, and 4-0 with a 0.25 ERA in the WS. Compare that to his 8-3 and a 1.94 ERA overall.

Penguincw: Looks like the Dodgers do go with Kershaw after all. I'm sure either decision is equal good. Kershaw, in G4s, doesn't actually pitch that badly, though not sure how he'll fare with 3 days rest and an injury earlier this year.

But as Thor mentioned, "Baseball has a way of ripping your ❤️ out, stabbing it, putting it back in your chest, then healing itself just in time for Spring Training." So even if either pitcher gets injured or something, they should be ready to go by Spring.

Of course, umpires screwing over games. Glad Vic Carrapazza isn't in any games. IMO, he's one of the worst umpires in the game, for his controversial strike zones in G2 of the 2014 NLDS (SF-WSH), G2 of the 2015 ALDS (TOR-TEX) and that Jul/01/2016 game, CLE@TOR.

saffuna: I've never seen anything worse than Eric Gregg in 1997 when he gave both Livan Hernandez and Greg Maddux an extra six inches on the outside of the plate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mR3...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwH...

One of the worst umpire errors used to be (haven't seen it recently) when a catcher missed the tag on a runner coming into home, but the runner didn't touch the plate. Umpires would signal safe, which the runner naturally thought meant he had scored, but umps would say "No, that only meant he missed the tag."

Sometimes when I see a pitch, even if it looks way off the plate, I remind myself that the ball might've caught a piece of the front part of the plate or something (which makes it a strike). That game, those pitches were off.

But hey, at least he was consistent, and gave roughly the same zone for both teams, the whole game, so at least the batters can somehow try to adjust. That Jul/01/2016 game, Vic gave a huge strike zone when the Jays were up, and a small one when the Indians were batting. And with the huge strike zone, the Jays were forced to swing at pitches off the plate to make sure they don't get called out. Jays went 1-10 with RISP, 17 LOB and 11 caught looking.

I can't really criticize that, because on TV (albeit with a different view) I can't make the right call either. But there's replay nowadays, so shouldn't be a problem.

---

FTR: You know I don't like the Giants, but that play yesterday (involving a diving stop by Baez and a scoop by Rizzo), I thought he was out, but looking on replay, looked clearly safe, and MLB still say out...

The umpire should make no call, just stand there. Eventually the catcher or runner, or both, will catch on.

Anybody remember the four-out game around 1990? Men on first and third, one out. Runner on first goes, bunt popped up, throw to first for double play and three outs.

Meanwhile the runner on third ran across the plate, just to come in and get his glove. Home ump said nothing until the team in the field came in, then gave the batting team the run. It was necessary to tag third with a fourth out.

The run didn't determine the game, but it could still happen.

Ah, I actually misread your post. The part where the runner misses the plate, in addition to the catcher missing the runner.

In that case, I agree, umpire should just wait 'til a play happens (maybe point indicating a tag and/or swipe of the plate is missed). Still difficult to see on TV.

< WannaBe: Game 5 in DC!! Rich Hill (??) vs M. Scherzer. No pressure, Rich. >

Eh, Dodgers survive to live another game. Dodgers and Nationals have both lost their most recent G5 of an NLDS. Dodgers lost 3-2 to the Mets last season, and in 2012, Nats blew a 6-0 lead vs. the Cardinals.

Still sticking to my guns, Dodgers.

Well, not to put a damper on ALCS, but it won't match the 'rival' or 'fun' factor of TOR/TEX. If you know what I mean.

Oh, yeah, today's editorial cartoon with J. Donaldson and Thor was cute. Had me chuckling.

Penguincw: Yay, Giants are eliminated. Onto the NLCS for the Cubs. The last time the Cubs won a playoff series in back-to-back seasons was in the 1907 and 1908 World Series. Maybe this year is the year of the Cubs (I called it).

Amazing comeback. Would be nice if Dodgers could win tomorrow, meaning that the Dodgers actually advance further than the Giants in the postseason.

Phony Benoni: The Cubs continue to answer wuestions. They may not have won series in back-to-back years, but hey once had a strange three-years streak, reaching the World Series in 1929, 1932, 1935 and 1938. Of course, they won three games total in those four series.

The only possible World Series rematch would be Dodgers - Indians (1920), won by the Indians in eight games and featuring one of the oddest World Sries games ever:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

This game featured:

1) The first grand slam in World Series play

2) The first home run by a pitcher

3) Not just the only World Series triple play, but an unssistaed one

4) Relief pitcher Clarence Mitchell bztting twice and accounting for five outs, hitting into the triple play and a double play

5) Cleveland winning 8-1, despite being outhit 13-12.
